Hiarcs 9 (9.6 to be exact) recently became available for OS X as a UCI engine for Sigma Chess, a nice shareware app that serves as the interface as well as a basic database. Cost is $15 for Sigma Chess and $40 for Hiarcs 9. You can check it out at http://www.sigmachess.com/

I am a MacUser since 1995and I use HiArcs 7.0 (iMac G4, 1 Ghz, running OS x 10.3) I do not know, if any chess program under GPL is stronger than HiArcs.
I run exachess as database.

I've generally thought of Mac users as being more enlightened life forms, but it seems as though the opposite is true when it comes to chess software--none of it seems to be Mac-compatible.  Can anyone recommend a Fritz-like program that is strong?  Or do I have to trick some hapless college kid out of his PC?

???
