Maybe you should invent a new opening and call it the Frenglish.

I know this topic is old, but I just joined the forum and am scanning the topics.   Smiley

As a French player on the white side of the board, I play the English.

So, I play the French and the English because well... I'm French Canadian!!!  Grin

That's funny!  Actually, your repertoire sounds similar to mine--I like 1. f4 and the French, but rotate between the Slav and the Dutch against 1. d4.  Maybe there is a natural connection between the Reversed Leningrad and the French... Undecided

I play 1.e4 but then opt for positional lines against Blacks most agressive responses, and i never open the sicilian.
I also play 1.f4 for similiar reasons to why i play the Dutch as black, though i doubt many other french players play the Reverse Leningrad Dutch!  Wink

Naturrally & logically, most Black's French player usually prefer d4/c4 etc (any non e4 first move), because they tend to love the positional struggle instead of the wild battle as they have to face like Sicilian if they open with e4.

There is no shame in that approach.  You only have to look at such a great player as Lev Polugaevsky's repertoire: Reti/English and QP with White, but wild Sicilians with Black!
I myself tend to go for sharp openings with Black, but play to preserve an edge with White.  The 'philosophy', insofar as there is one, is based on the speculation that White's initial advantage is quite small and that with White, you are more likely to preserve that advantage if you do not bring matters to a premature head.
Equally, with Black, if you don't seek to force things, you risk being at a permanent (albeit slight) disadvantage.
As I say, though, this is just speculation ...

I've typically played 1 c4 and Catalans over the past few years, but I'm a wreck: I like to counter attack with Black, but prefer to be conservative with White.  Go figure...

Undecided

I've not played the French for long, not having bothered to learn anything about it.  I played the Caro and the Sicilian, before switching to the French.  I'm also starting to dabble with 1 f4 as White.

I am not a lifetime French player, but it has been and maybe again will be part of my repertoire. I usually play 1.e4.

just wondering:
Why most french players like Lputian, Vaganian,Kortchnoi... play 1.d4 with white while some (such as Morozevich and Short) plays 1.e4 almost every game with white

Any thoughts? (Wanna know what other french players play)
