@Mnb

might be true Wink
Fast is exactly what we Kalashnikovs are about; we are even so fast that we cant wait for a normal Sveshnikov;

seriously: I cant consider 9.Qxd6 if I want to castle 0-0-0; for the same reason I cant play in the third variation a6+b5 (but only e6); and scores for black in those variations are nearly as bad as in my variations according to my database

Dutch Kalashnikov draws his conclusions too fast.
3.Nf3 Qxd5 is just a Classical Scandinavian; since when is this very bad for Black?

3.Bb5+ Bd7 4.Bc4 Bg4 (it is OK if one does not like b5, but that does not proof this line very bad) 5.f3 Bf5 6.Nc3 Nbd7 7.Qe2 (I prefer 7.Nge2) Nb6 8.Bb3 Qd7 9.d6 may score very well for White, but Qxd6! 10.Nb5 Qd7 11.Qe5 o-o-o! 12.Nxa7+ Kb8 13.Nb5 Nfd5 14.a4 e6 15.Ne2 f6 (Emms) is not so clear.

3.d4 Bg4 4.f3 Bf5 5.Bb5+ Ndb7 6.c4 a6 is the important alternative.

Hi,
I am new here and followed with much interest the discussion about Alekhine opening/Scandinavian opening/opening repertoire (apologize my English).

I played the Sicilian for several years and now also want to change (like somebody in this thread before, asking for tipps concerning his opening repertoire) because I like the Kalashnikov but unfortunately you get nowadays more and more the Rossolimo and closed Sicilians etc. etc. and I hate this dull closed positions.

As I followed here the discussion and some people wrote nice comments about the Alekhine, I tried now myself the Alekhine and I must say that I cannot understand how somebody really want to play this opening!  Dont you guys think that it terrible to get the 4-pawns-setup on your board (under the aspect of space advantage this must be a bad dream for black)? Is this in your eyes really a nice position after e4 Nf6/e5 Nd5/d4 d6/c4 Nb6 and then f4 ?
And even, if Wite does not fight for the immediate advantage, it can get with 2. Nc3 d5/exd5 Nxd5/Bc4 a fine position that is known from the Vienna Game and offers good kingsideattacking-chances.

In my eyes (OK, I am only at the 1800-1900 level) the Alekhine looks horrible!!!

I decided to go for the Scandinavian.

Good comments.  Your English is not so bad.

I think that if you're 1800-1900 you should play neither of these defenses, but only 1...e5!  But I've posted elsewhere about this, so I will not ride that particular hobby-horse right now.

I think Alekine's particularly IS a horrible choice for someone at this level of play.  It takes, in my view, considerable knowledge of chess to make Alekhine's work.  But it does work, or at any rate, come very close to working, if Black knows what he is doing.  It is rather brilliantly conceived, I think, right in line with how Steinitz played.  It's interesting that Fischer, an exponent of Steinitz, also sometimes used Alekhine's.

A final comment:
I played now 20 games with the Nf6-Scandinavian (on the black side) on ICC. My score was very good. But the only reason for this is that my opponents (average about 1800 on ICC) had not the smallest idea of this opening.

There were 3 lines in my repertoire that I would consider very bad for black:

First line:
3. d4 Bg4, 4.f3 Bf5, 5. Bb5+ Nbd7, 6. c4 e6, 7. dxe6 Bxe6, 8. c5 ! Scores tremendous 81 % for White in the Megabase.

Second line:
3. Bb5+ Bd7, 4. Bc4 Bg4, 5. f3 Bf5, 6. Nc3 Sbd7, 7. Qe2!  is awful, scores after 9. d6! about 75 % for White (I dont like positions after 4...b5)

Third line:
3. Nf3 scores bad in Nxd5 and Qxd5 and vs. 3..Bg4

Conclusio: in 20 games I had not one opponent who had an idea what to do.
But if you meet somebody well-prepared, you are poor with this opening!

<after 3...Nfd7 4.e6!? is interesting pawn sacrifice>
Of course it is, as it is named the Spielmann Gambit!
Some eight years ago I had to win a game against the leader to win an unimportant tournament. I knew that my opponent would defend with 1.e4 Nf6 2.Nc3 d5 3.e5 Nfd7 and decided to play for a win without risk with 4.d4 transposing to the Steinitz Variation. Indeed I won in the far endgame. A few months later I met him again and went for 4.e6! The game lasted less than 20 moves ....

How about 1.e4 d5 2.Nc3 Nf6 3.e5 Ng8!? recommended by Tim McGrew.  Although I can't see why a 2...Qxd5 player would want to avoid the previously mentioned 2.Nc3 dxe4 3.Nxe4 Qd5 variation.  Unless it's because of the deadly 3.f3 gambit attempting to transpose into the BDG while avoiding a couple of Black's defenses.  You can decide for yourself who it's deadly for.   Smiley

Personally, I have found 1.e4 d5 2.Nc3 e6! to work very well in blitz. Play usually continues 3.Nf3 Nf6 4.e5 Nfd7 5.d4 c5 and now white thinks for a while and then reluctantly play 6.dxc5.

I'm quite happy to play this typical basic french position, while I suspect that many of the white players usually play the advance variation against the french.  Grin

This is Alekhine Defence line by transposition,
1.e4 Nf6 2.Nc3 d5 3.e5

i prefer 3...d4 or 3...Ne4 for Black,
after 3...Nfd7 4.e6!? is interesting pawn sacrifice.

Don't worry too much about the BDGers being tempted into it after 1 e4 d5... Lips Sealed

We think the Scandinavian is too crappy to allow you the honor of our beloved gambit Wink .

On a more serious note, you probably need to learn BDG lines of some sort for a defense to d4 anyway, so this just gives you more motivation to do so.  1 d4 d5 2 e4 dxe4 3 Nc3 Nf6 4 f3 exf3 5 Nxf3 Bf5! would suit Scandinavian players quite well.  Alekhine players may prefer 5 ... g6.

Back to 1 e4 d5 2 Nc3, what's wrong with Nf6?  2 ... Nf6 3 e5 Nfd7, with a quick c5 and Nc6 is surely playable for black.

You might have missed my previous post. But it dealt precisely with this move. 2. Nc3 dxe4 3 Nxe4 Qd5!, and there is no deviation at all.

Oh yes...  the Blackmar-Diemer gambit can be considered a 'serious' deviation, depending on your views on it....   (its crap to me   Grin)

I just placed an order for both Andrew Martin's and Emms' (2nd ed) Scandinavian. And i'm still waiting for my John Cox Alekhine. The best thing Santa can do for me right now is let me receive all 3 books before Christmas!

I quit the Alekhine when everyone started feeding me the exchange variation, not that it's terribly good for white, but it did feel like I was playing for a draw at most.

The Scandinavian doesn't have a similar spoil sport variation I think, or if there is one it's not very common as I haven't seen it yet!  Cheesy

But the price is a position with less tension as there's no pawn contact  in the centre, still the games tend to become interesting after awhile anyway!

The exchange with cxd6 is definitely not a draw (at least not at sub-master level!). There was an interesting thread on the voronezh awhile back.

I think the only spoil-sport for the scandinavian is probably 1. e4 d5 2. d3?. This occurs phenomenally often on internet blitz! If swapping queens is not suitable then defending the pawn with 2... c6 and 2... e6 lead to good transpositions to other openings.

I just bought Secrets of Opening Surprises 2 and there was a good section on 1. e4 d5 2. Nc3 dxe4 3. Nxe4 Qd5. if 4. Ng3, then 4... Nc6 5. Nf3 e5! So White has no choice but to go back to normal lines with 4. Nc3. Certainly the great appeal of the scandinavian is the lack of viable alternatives for White to the main lines!  Grin

Goldin-Stripunsky at the US Championships (see chess.fm lecture) is a great game in the 3.. Qd6 scandinavian.

Have been away for awhile and look at the number of new threads in my favourite openings!   Grin

To answer the original question: The best thing about the Scandinavian is you get the same type of position every time (i'm referring to 2... Qxd5 here). There are much less strong deviations than in the Alekhine. So if you specialise in the scan, you will be garnering a VERY HUGE amount of practical experience that will more than compensate for the demerits in the opening in itself, or in comparison with the Alekhine.

The plus point for the Alekhine however may be that it is less common than the Scan and has greater surprise value. I play both and always seem to get an easier position out of the Scan. Whereas with the Alekhine I've lost rather disastrously to "harmless" early deviations like 2. Nc3, chase variation etc.  Embarrassed

If you don't want to study much, the scan is better. But if you are willing to put in hours I have a suspicion that the Alekhine might be more rewarding... certainly Alekhine die-hards and specialists have a reputation for scoring very well with their opening.  Grin

I didn't even consider 4...Qe6+! (I had thought about 4...Qd6 though.).  That looks like a very good solution.  I think Black can improve on Kaufmans variations after 1.e4 d5 2.exd5 Qxd5 3.Nf3 Bg4 4.Be2 (this has been played by some pretty strong players though).

After 1.e4 d5 2.exd5 Qxd5 3.Nf3 Bg4 4.Nc3, black doesn't have to play Qa5, surely. Wahls suggests playing 4...Qe6+ followed by exchanging the queens and Nc6 (threatening Nc6-b4).

However this isn't exactly what this thread was originally about, because this variation isn't avaiable after 1.e4 d5 2.exd5 Nf6 3.Nf3, but obviously the situation after 3...Qxd5 is the same as after 1.e4 d5 2.exd5 Qxd5 3.Nf3 Nf6. In those lines white always seems to have a small advantage, he plays 4.d4, but holds back c2-c4 for a while. Black has to be really careful and I'm not sure whether anything convincing has been found for black (you never know why draws occur in tournaments...).

I originally also thought 3.Nf3 was nothing special but then I started looking over the analysis in Kaufman's "The Chess Advantage in Black and White" and started to change my mind.

Martin also has some interesting material on this in his section but in most of the games White seemed to be playing pretty much for only 2 results.

Against 3...Nc6 Kaufman advocates' "4.Nc3 Qa5 5.Bb5 Bd7 6.0-0 0-0-0 7.Re1 a6? (Better was 7...e6 8.d3 Bb4 [else Nd2-c4] 9.Bxc6 Bxc6 10.Ne5 Be8 11.Bd2 Ne7 12.a3.  White kills the bishop pair and retains a nice lead in development.) 8.b4!".  He likes White's chances in all variations stemming from 8.b4.

Against 3...Bg4 I think White should prefer 4.Nc3, as opposed to the Kaufman recommendation of 4.Be2, as I don't think Black is really doing all that well after 4...Qa5 5.h3.

I'm open to suggestions that the above isn't necessarily so bad for Black or of other possibilities for Black that might be better.

Part of my current opinion that 3.Nf3 deserves a "!" is based on that I didn't think White was getting much in the solid variations with ...Bf5.  Perhaps I'm not aware of the best ways for White to play against this with 3.d4.

Well, I would not call myself an expert on the Classical Scandinavian, but gut feeling tells me that 3.Nf3 can not be critical. Black gets the additional possibility of Qh5. According to Harman and Taulbut 3...Nc6 is a good answer.

For what its worth I think the biggest threat to the Scandanavian is 3.Nf3! reserving the possibility of c4 before Nc3.

What's the latest on 3.Nf3, I know Wahls recommended 3...Bg4 but in my database the big guys seem to prefer 3...Nf6 and a draw before move 15.

Though I don't think 3.Nf3 is the biggest threat to the Scandinavian, it can be annoying to meet as black can easily overpress after 3...Bg4.
What does the experts here think? Is it promising for white or not?  Undecided

Maybe I have the move order wrong, because I am typing from memory.

1) 5...Bc8 in this line is not so rare. And this move prevents complicated lines 5...Bf5 6.g4 and 5...Bf5 6.Nc3 Nbd7 7.g4

2) in your line play may continue:13...O-O 14.f5 e:f5 15.N:f5 Bf6 16.Qf3 c6. I am not afraid of isolated d-pawn
and think this position is about equal.

I have no idea whether Bg4 or b5 is better, but b7-b5 is a useful move, one can possibly play b5-b4 later in response to white playing Nc3 and the black bishop can often be usefully placed on b7 later on.

OK, and why don't you like 4...Bg4 instead of 4...b5?
Any forced good line for White after that move?

Black has almost full compensation for the pawn here in my opinion.

for example 9.a3 Bc5 10.b4 Nd4 seems to be only slightly better for White.

Emms in his book on the Scandinavian gives 1.e4 d5 2.exd5 Nf6 3.Nf3 Bg4 4.Bb5+ Nbd7 5.c4 a6 6.Bxd7+ Qxd7 7.d4 and 6.Ba4 and "White has not been forced to compromise the kingside pawn structure".
As I agree with Tracke, only 4...Qxd5 5.Nc3 Qd6 remains, when White's early Nf3 is a slight concession.

Against 3.Bb5+ Black should either play Bd7 4.Bc4 b5!? or 3...Nbd7, the latter with Portuguese/Icelandic ideas.
The gambit move c7-c6 is usually inferior, because it leads to positions similar to the Göring/Danish Gambit with colours reversed and a tempo down.

I do not trust 3.c4 e6 4.dxe6 Bxe6 5.Nf3 c5 because of 6.d4! cxd4 7.Qxd4 and what does Black have for the pawn?
And why be afraid of 5...Qe7 6.Be2 Bxc4 ? Critical is 6.Qe2 Nc6 7.d4 Bg4 or o-o-o.

The book had the effect good books usually have: it made the stupids more stupid, the intelligent more intelligent and the other thousands of readers remained unchanged.

Clouds above "my" new Scandinavian.

I just played on ICC a blitz game with 2... Nf6, 3. Bb5+ Bd7, 4. Bc4 Bg4, 5. f3 Bf5, 6. Nc3 Nbd7, 7. Qe2 Nb6 and amazingly instead of Bb3 my opponent played Bb5+ ...

To my disappointment i was nearly immediately in an dry endgame (without any tactical complications) and honestly speaking - I did go through it afterwards 3 times - I tended to prefer the White side. Sad

Also the database gives these and similar lines in the Nf6-Scandinavians rather good chances for White (62/38 % !) Cry

I would call 1.e4 d5 2.exd5 Nf6 3.Nf3! Bg4?! 4.h3! a real dangerous weapon against the Portugese.
If Black plays 3.Nf3 Nxd5 (what might be best) then White simply transposes with 4.d4 to the usual mainlines where Nf3 follows in any case.
3...Bg4?! should be inferior. Something like 4.h3 Bxf3 5.Qxf3 Qxd5 6.Qxd5 Nxd5 7.Sc3! Sxc3 8.bxc3 seems to be already a technical win on higher levels and 5...Nxd5 6.Nc3 can´t be much better.
After 4.h3 Bh5 White has a wide choice between 5.Be2, 5.d4 and 5.Bb5 which may all(!) be "+=". - Again after 5.Be2 or 5.d4 Black should transpose to the mainlines with 5...Nxd5 as 5...Qxd5 would offer White a nice kind of the lines with 2...Qxd5 3.d4 (where an early Nf6 can´t satisfie Black, Bonsai mentioned this). After 5.Bb5+ I cannot believe in 5...c6?! but Portugese/Icelandic players may also play that?! So we have 5.Bb5+ Nbd7 6.Nc3! a6 7.Be2 Nb6 8.0-0 Nbxd5 9.Nxd5 Qxd5 10.c4 what again favours White.
I do not play 1.e4 anymore in tournament games but in 3-5min blitz I have a 80% score with 3.Nf3 on a 2200 level (sometimes I blunder away my advantage). I have not worked out this line very deeply but to be honestly, I see NOTHING for Black. Aside from playing this in bullet games ...

Excuse a stupid question, but is 3.Nf3 Bg4 bad for black?

I suppose you intend 4.Bb5+ Nbd7 and 5.c4 or 5.h3 Bg4 and 6.c4  but isn't black OK after 6...a6 7.Ba4 b5 8.cxb5 Nxd5, at least black seems very active to me.  ???

I think that variation is not about anything specifically tactically. It's about either luring black into one of the Nxd5 lines, after which white can often play d2-d4 and c2-c4-c5 in quite a strong way or about getting black to play Qxd5, after which white doesn't have to play Nc3, here white can also try for a superior version of 1.e4 d5 2.exd5 Qxd5 3.d4/Nf3. By transposition there is some analysis of this in the Scandinavian book by Wahls (where he explains why after 1.e4 d5 2.exd5 Qxd5 3.Nf3 one shouldn't play 3...Nf6, that analysis is also on the Hansen cd).

Yes , but after 5...c5  6.d4 is also possible (but I don't think this is the strongest) and you must be prepared for this move. 8)

@alumbrado
true, Black plays the Icelandic with a tempo down. But why then there is still a score of 57 % white vs. 43 % black (elo-average 2220) in over 300 games? So at least at my level it still seems playable.

@alumbrado (2)
you asked on the page before why this aversion against the Caro-Kann Panov. Well, I fall immediately asleep if I see something that looks only little bit like a queens gambit declined. So the Panov setup with d4+c4 vs. d5 causes me already utter boredom.

I think there is a bit of a problem with your idea of transposing to the Icelandic Gambit after (1.e4 d5 2.exd5 Nf6 3.Nf3 Bg4 4.c4) 4...e6 - that problem being that after 5.dxe6 Bxe6 you are a tempo down on the normal Icelandic Gambit (you have played Bc8-g4xe6 instead of Bc8xe6).  Now, it *may* be that Black has comething approaching sufficient compensation in the Icelandic proper, but to play it a tempo down is just asking way too much ...

@Dzambus

maybe 6. Qe2 is not dangerous, but anyway it gives White the chance to change Queens.

I am checking the Scandinavian because I want an open position with much tactics.

To change Queens in move nr. 7 is for sure what I am not searching.

Maybe I am wrong, but I think this is not true:

my line would be in the case of 3. Nf3 Bg4
and after 4. c4 e6 (transposition/Icelandic Gambit)
4. Be2 Nxd5
4. h3 Bh5
all with good scores for black.

Above all must be said that 3. Nf3 happens in the 2...Nf6-Scandinavian in about 11 % of the 12.000 games in Chessbase 8.0, so this is really not a reason for not playing 2...Nf6.

The only way for White to cause black serious problems seems 3. c4 e6, 4. dxe6 Bxe6, 5. Nf3. Somebody in another thread said 5...Qe7 is best. Would never play this! After 6. Qe2 Nc6, 7. d4 black is either in serious problems or cant avoid (Bg4) that White can change the Queens and then have a game that scores 72 % for White! So I would go for the 5...Sc6

I personally think 5...Sc6 gives difficulties for Black: after
6.d4 Bb4+ 7.Nc3

both 7...Ne4 and 7...Qe7 are not equalizing for Black in my opinion.

But there are strong masters who play 5...c5 with some success. I  would  play 5...Qe7 and 6.Qe2 is not so dangerous  , I am rather afraid of 6.Be2, because

6.Qe2 Nc6 7.d4 Bg4 8.Q:e7+ B:e7 is not so bad for Black in my opinion.

This is absolutely not true. As already mentioned by Alumbrado, 3...c6 is a very viable option, when 4.dxc6 is good for Black, 4.d4 and 4.Nc3 transpose to the Caro-Kann Panov Attack. Here I agree with Alumbrado, that the g6 lines are interesting, though a bit dubious.

@Alumbrado thanks for your answer

Yes, this once had to be said: A white player, that is perfect prepared for this one line (of an unusual opening!) that is probably difficult for black, is a rare thing, especially below-2000!!!

I am rated 1850 Elo. I dont know how it is in other countries, but in Austria usually people below 2000 dont care much about opening theory, just a little bit or at least not very deep.

And below 2000 most games are anyway decided by blunders and not by some "slight positional advantage" that a GM finds after 3 days of home analysis!

One chess-master told me one year ago: if you are below 2000, dont care too much about opening theory. This matters only if you are above 2000 and usually play against people above 2000. Better look for your tactical abilities in the middle-game.

I would estimate the likeliness to get at my level the one critical line of the Nf6-Scandinavian on the board, of below 15 % !!!

Even Selby Anderson's highly optimistic (for Black) coverage of the Portuguese/Icelandic complex reckons that Black has problems after 5.Nf3 in the Icelandic - and there are difficulties, too, with some of the lines he gives in the mainstream Portuguese, with improvements for White casting doubt on Black's compensation.

Plaskett's recent book, while generally execrable, is actually quite strong on these lines and makes it quite clear that Black is skating on thin ice.

Having said that, the White player who is fully prepared for these possibilities is, I suspect, a rare thing indeed, especially at the sub-2000 level ... even if they do negotiate the opening successfully the chances are you will get a chance at some stage in the game!

A question - why the aversion to a transposition to a Panov Caro-Kann?   Black has a choice between some solid lines with ...e6 and ...Bb4 which nonetheless are sufficiently unbalanced (there is an IQP at play after all) to offer winning chances to the better player; and the sharper lines with ...g6 which are certainly interesting - and while probably not quite sound, are a darn sight more so than the Icelandic Gambit!

Thanks for your suggestions, they are appreciated.

Well, back to the roots.
If the Qxd5-Scandi scores bad against the correct White setup, why not have another look at the Nf6-Scandi? I mean, it would be great to have a new opening that from the first moment on makes White play my game and this is the Scandinavian. I at first moment did not want to study the 2...Nf6 because with 4. d4 instead of 4. cxd6 or 4. exd6 White can transpose to the Caro-Kann or French.

The second look showed me that the danger that White transposes, is in the Islandic Gambit very low. At the Scandinavian Gambit (3..c6) the likeliness of a tranpose is very high, at Chessbase 8.0 at about 80 % ! But at the Islandic Gambit (3...e6) only 22 % of people transpose to the French Exchange. And even if they do, you have a boring French Exchange that offers Black immediately a good position with a score of 52 % white to 48 % black.

So why not go for the Nf6-Scandinavian (and the Scandinavian Gambit)? Cheesy

The by far most common third move there is the 3. d4. I went throught all different variations and think that after 3...Bg4 (I think this is called Portugese variation, isnt it?) Black get always a good tactical fighting-position that has good scores for black.

Also after 3. Bb5+ Bd7, 4. Bc4 Bg4 or 4. Be2 Nxd5 etc. black scores good.

One basic question remains: does Black get for the pawn (if White keeps it) get enought play or can White stand the black attack and have the better end in the endgame?

Well I almost agree.  There are only a few opening variations that are so boring that almost anyone could draw them.  I do think most of us club players do put too much emphasis on the opening.  I think it was Aagaard who said something to the effect of, "In nearly any game one is going to be presented with chances.  Its up to each individual to make the most of them."

Like anyone else, there are lines I like to play and those I don't, but there's no such thing as a dull position--just positions in which the beauty of the struggle escapes us.   Wink

For example, in looking for a way to counter the Slav a number of years ago, I spent some time exploring the Exchange variation (1 d4 d5 2 c4 c6 3 cxd5).  I was playing against stronger opposition, so it was a useful tool to try and simplify and play for the draw.  As I analyzed the variations, I found myself intrigued by some of the positions of what is typically regarded as a dull and drawish opening.

Having dabbled with the Kalashnikov myself, it certainly is a swashbuckling way to play, but careful preparation for responses to 2 c3 yielded interest in that variation (not to mention some rather strong results!).  When preparing our opening repertoire, I think amateur players start with the romantic or "desirable" lines, which renders the more practical analysis of sidelines and less topical variations (the ones we're likely to play at least 75-80% of the time) much less attractive.

Just an observation, but any position can be rich and interesting.  Chess is chess!   Grin

I don't think its nearly so simple.  I mean if that's all White had to do why did Kasparov have so much trouble against Anand.  If you're a subscriber there is some good material that you should review.  After 1.e4 d5 2.exd5 Qxd5 3.Nc3 Qa5 (I don't completely trust 3...Qd6 either but your view toward the Ne5/Bf4 threat is misguided.  (...Nc6 hardly being the only way to counter the threat) 4.d4 and now either 4...Nf6 and ...Bf5 (or maybe ...Be6 against the Ne5 idea) or the immediate 4...Bf5 is actually quite solid for Black if he knows a few critical variations (like when to play ...Kxd7 after a White Nxd7 move or how to meet various sharp d5 ideas).

Having said that, perhaps this isn't the opening for you if it goes this much against the grain.  In your intitial post you said you hated the dull positions that arose from some of the anti-sicilian systems.  I can certainly sympathize with your feelings but what defence doesn't have this problem?  Maybe the Pirc or Modern?

Unfortunately the analysis of the Qa5-Scandinavian brought up even worse results  Cry

against the typical c6 + e6 black-setup White scores with a d4 + Nf3 + Bc4 + Bd2 + Qe2 + 0-0-0 and a pawn storn on the black king-side an impressing 72 % !

I fear, the Scandinavian - if played correct by White - really sucks! The only hope: White dont knows this as he never played it with black.

Some short analysis already showed me that I would not appreciate the 3...Qd6-setup.
The white threats of Ne5 + Bc4 and Nd5 + Lf4 are tremendous.
To not allow White a strong Ne5+Bf4-setup you should be able to meet Ne5 with Nc6.
But to do so, you must before play a6 to avoid Bb5.
This means, that you have only the choice of an early 4…a6 or to meet h3 not with Bh5 but with Bxf3.
But even then White can get the Bf4-setup with an early Nge2, you can`avoid that.

There's certainly a lot left to be explored after 1.e4 d5 2.exd5 Qxd5 3.Nc3 Qd6.  I don't think all of White's best plans have been crystalyzed yet.  For a lot on this defence get Michael Melts excellent book "Scandinavian Defense: The Dynamic 3...Qd6".  For what its worth I think the biggest threat to the Scandanavian is 3.Nf3! reserving the possibility of c4 before Nc3.

Thanks for your ideas.

After a first quick look at 3...Qd6 in the Scandinavian I must say, that this could get quite uncomfortable for Black, if White sets up with d4 + Ne5 + Bf4.

Maybe I am wrong, but this seems to correct my first opinion that on d6 the Queen is probably more safe then on a5.

c6 is a security move, so in a way black accepts that he'll be playing somewhat slowly without exerting immediate pressure on white if he plays c7-c6. On the plus side it's a very solid move and the queen can escape to c7 and d8. Not playing c7-c6 and e.g. instead Nc6 is much more agressive, but also riskier - both sides can go wrong more easily e.g. after 1.e4 d5 2.exd5 Qxd5 3.Nc3 Qa5 4.d4 Nf6 5.Nf3 Bg4 6.Bc4 Nc6 white is already under a lot of pressure and has to worry about keeping things under control.

As to a3+b4 plans, I'd say that sometimes black should just castle to the kingside. Always casteling queenside doesn't really work.

Crazy thing: when looking through the Chessbase database for 3..Qa5 I found some players rated over 2200 Elo that did never play c6.
Isnt that too risky for the Queen to play a Qa5-setup without an escape?

@Alumbrado: thanks

What you folks think about 3...Qd6 in the Scandinavian ?

Wouldnt it have the advantage, that the queen is not so much target then at a5 ? Or can White even there play later on Bf4? Or is it compared with a5 too passive?

Just looked at Chessbase 8.0 and was very surprised to have with a basis of 1200 games a sensationally good statistique (for black) of 53 % white / 47 % black in 3...Qd6 !

I think you probably took the right decision in going for the Scandinavian ahead of the Alekhine.  Not that there is anything wrong with the Alekhine, it is just that it seems to me it requires greater understanding from Black.  The Scandinavian is much easier to play.

As regards meeting the a3, b4 plan, the trick is to make sure you can meet an eventual b4-b5 with ...c6-c5, challenging the centre and keeping the queenside files closed for the time being.

Besides that specific point, you should just follow the general principle to meet an attack on the flank, with action in the centre.  In this case, either ...c5 or ...e5 are indicated - these are in any case Black's standard plans in this position type

When trying out my "new" opening, the Scandinavian with 15/0 games on ICC, there occured a position where I did feel rather unwell.

In "my" Scandinavian I play the Queen to a5 and then play (of course e6 and c6) a 0-0-0 looking for a tactical battle, as White usually goes for 0-0.

One White-player built up with 0-0 and then followed with a3 +b4 ...

Looked quite dangerous (danger of trapping my Queen) and White thus could build up a kingside-attack "for free" by hunting my Queen.

Is this (a3 + b4) really uncomfortable for black (my question to Scandinavian-players) or does psychology fool me as I am not used to have my Queen in the middle of the battle?

Ups. When analyzing whether to got for the 2... Sf6 or the 2. Qxd5 in the Scandinavian I just recognize that at the first possibility White can always transpose after 3. c4 in move Nr. 4 with d4 (instead of dxc6 or dxe6) to the Caro-Kann or the French what I personally would very much like to avoid.
So I will go for the second possibility!

Hi,
I am new here and followed with much interest the discussion about Alekhine opening/Scandinavian opening/opening repertoire (apologize my English).
