	A very interesting idea, pawn confrontation instead of a closed center. I played the Kan before changing to the Kalashnikov. I changed, as in the Kan - at my level - you make it rather difficult for White to win for the price of a passive setup. But even the Kan would be better then those dull closed Sicilian.

	Against the Closed Sicilian it is possible to play (1.e4 c5 2.Nc3) 2...e6 and then 3...d5, which leads to a much more open game than the usual Closed Sicilian lines. There is the problem that White can then change plans and play 3.Nf3 when 3...d5?! 4.d4! is thought to be good for White, so Black will have to be prepared to play an Open Sicilian with an early e6 - not suitable for Black players who want only to play (e.g.) the Najdorf or the Classical or, indeed, the Kalashnikov. On the plus side, though, White is (obviously) committed to an early Nc3, so Black can play a Kan or Taimanov without allowing White his Maroczy options (5.c4 or 5.Bd3 with a later c4 against the Kan; 5.Nb5 followed by 6.c4 against the Taimanov).

	If sometimes we fly too close to the sun, at least this shows we are spreading our wings.

	@Mnb thanks, your ideas are appreciated, will look on it. The chessbase database dont seems to like my idea of a 0-0-0 in the closed Sicilian. Only 5 % of the 50.000 closed Sicilians are played with a black 0-0-0 (score 54 % white / 46 % black). Why? Is White quicker when doing a pawn storm? The Nc3 should rather hinder White in this.

	If you prefer an open game by all means, you should consider 1...e5 (the name speaks for itself) or 1...c6. The sharpest way to meet the Closed Sicilian is 1.e4 c5 2.Nc3 Nc6 3.g3 g6 4.Bg2 Bg7 5.d3 Rb8!? with the point 6.Be3 b5 7.Bxc5? b4 8.Na4 Qa5 -+(Dutch IM Paul Boersma, who wrote a book on the Closed Sicilian 25 years ago). Other 6th moves can also be met by 6...b5, eg 6.f4 b5 7.Nf3 b4 8.Ne2 e6 9.o-o Nge7 and Black is ready for the blocking f7-f5. After this Black will continue his early queenside attack (a5, Ba6). Against the Rossolimo you might consider a variation with an early Nd4 (at once or after Qb6).

	Hi, I am a big fan of the Sicilian Kalashnikov (and vs. d4 the Dutch Leningrad), rated about 1850 Elo. Unfortunately going for my pet Kalashnikov has the risk of meeting a closed Sicilian (very often) and a Rossolimo (sometimes), the Smith-Morra is not such a big problem, its too rare, the Alapin can get quite tactical with the Queen outside. But my biggest problem is really those lousy, deadly boring closed Sicilians with their unsympathique positional and closed approach (sorry ) Any ideas to make a closed Sicilian tactical and sharp and open, are welcome. The same for the Rossolimo. What for example about going for 0-0-0 in the closed Sicilian and play it like a dragon? (but maybe this is no good idea as White is usually quicker in the kingside pawn storm?)
