Well against the GP I use 1.e4 c5 2.Nc3 Nc6 3.f4 a6 4.Nf3 Nd4!? ... a game I played this very week continued 5.Nd4 cd4 6.Ne2 d5! 7.e5 Bg4 8.h3 Be2 9Be2 e6 and I went on to win  ...... of course a lot of players dont see the closed sicilian as boring (for white) because like the KIA they are aiming for your king if you park it kingside lol  Wink

Here is some of my experience with the line mentioned:
1.e4 c5 2.Nc3 a6!? 3.Nf3!? e6! 4.d4 cxd4 5.Nxd4 Qc7 6.Bd3 (Be2 does not help at the support of e4, it is met by a quick Nf6) 6..b6 (be carrefull with the move order!) 7.0-0 Bb7 8.Be3 (not f4? Bc5! or Bb4!?) 8..d6 (only now i close my bishop in the pawn structure) 9.f4 Nd7! (I don't bring the other Knight to f6 too quickly cause now the threat g4-g5 is fast!) and now:

1>10.g4 Be7 (watch the move order!) 11.f5 e5 12.Nb3 h6! =+ with a 0-0-0 in mind. See the flexibility?

2>10.Qf3 Be7 11.g4 h6! 12.Rad1 Nf6! planning Nh7! ang g5 (look at the weak e4-e5 complex now!) and if 
13.g5 hxg5 14.fxg5 Ne5! 15.Qg2 Nfg4! -+

This variations are played in club games and i was Black (against  2000+ rated players).Not to mention who won!
The system has great flexibility. The key is to challenge e4 with maybe Nc5 and Nf6 if white is not too agressive!

Against 1.e4 c5 2.Nc3 a6 3.Nf3!? is a bit of a problem for Sveshi/Kalashnikov fans.  I really can't recommend highly enough the idea of having more than one Sicilian variation in your armoury: it makes it so much easier to meet anti-Sicilians flexibly!  Here for example, 3...d6 4.d4 cxd4 5.Nxd4 Nf6 is a Najdorf and 3...e6 4.d4 cxd4 5.Nxd4 gives you the option of a Kan, Taimanov or Scheveningen set-up: really something for pretty much all tastes!

I tried now 3 times 2...a6 vs. 2.Nc3 and it was great! Only my third opponent seemed to be prepared for it and answered 3.a4. Well, there are several ways to meet this, I decided to answer with b6 + Bb7 and keep the same setup.

Against Nf3: well, what would be with some kind of Kalashnikov-setup for the Kalashni/Sveshni-players? 3.Nf3 d6, 4.d4 cxd4, 5.Nxd4 e5 ?! (or for the Sveshni-players Nf6 and only then e5)

An interesting idea 2...a6.

I often castle queenside with the black pieces in the closed Sicilian and did not meet big problems (my opponents were about average 2000).

Eg. 
1.e4 c5
2.Nc3 Nc6
3.g3 d6
4.Bg2 e5
5.Nge2 Be6
6.d3 Qd7
7.Nd6 Nge7
8.Nec3 Nd4
9.0-0 0-0-0

Against GPA, eg.
1. e4 c5
2.Nc3 d6
3.f4 Nc6
4.Nf3 g6
5.Bb5 Bd7
6.0-0 Bg7
7.d3 a6 
8.Bxc6 Bxc6
9.Qe1 Qd7
10.Qh4 h6

Hello, my idea is: 1.e4 c5 2.Nc3 a6!? 3.f4 (if 3.Nf3 then 3..e6 and i play a hedgehog formation that is more effective without c4) 3..b5!? 4.Nf3 Bb7 5.d3 e6 and only then 6..d5!? Thoughts? It scores really well for me in blitz games. I have not used it in club play cause my excellent results with the classic set-up till now. But then u have a classical-strategic-slow battle with black that has the most chances to go wrong!

I do not have faith in the a6/b5 idea against the GP-Attack, because a6 loses a viable tempo if White answers a3. Moreover the rook is better on b8 than on a8, as White has often tactical tricks with e4-e5 based on the fianchetoed king's bishop.
After 1.e4 c5 2.Nc3 Nc6 3.f4 a6 4.g3 b5 5.Bg2 I think White will reach a good version of the Closed Sicilian.
  
The book had the effect good books usually have: it made the stupids more stupid, the intelligent more intelligent and the other thousands of readers remained unchanged.

thanks for the idea with Rb8 + b5 ...
Looks really interesting, scores also very well in the Megabase.

A similar plan vs. the GPA could be 1.e4 c5, 2.Nc3 Nc6, 3.f4 a6 + b5 + Bb7...?
I am myself a Grandprixattack-player and know therefore that the best you can handle a GPA is to not allow Bxc6 and then to go straight forward on the queenside...

Well, I have in the meantime my doubts whether it is a recommendable setup. Nearly all games in Megabase where black plays 0-0-0 arise from positions where White took before with Bb5 the knight on c6. In 90 % of games black castles 0-0.

if I get you right (sorry for any misunderstandings, my mother tongue is German), you would NOT advise against 3. g3 d5 and 3. f4 d5, but against 3. Nf3 you would aim for a Kan-setup with 1. e4 c5, 2. Nc3 e6, 3. Nf3 a6, 4. d4 cxd, 5. Nxd Qc7...?

No- don't try to play that line - White is just getting all his pieces into play far too quickly and Black is under real pressure.  As I suggested earlier, if you play this line against the Closed, you are going to have to be prepared for one of the 2...e6 lines in the Open Sicilian.  My recommendation would be the Kan, especially with White committed to Nc3 (ruling out the dangerous option of 5.Bd3 followed by 0-0, Qe2 and c4).  If you like, you can transpose to the Scheveningen later on, but having effectively avoided the English and Keres Attacks.

Well, to avoid against the closed Sicilian the boring closed pawn-center setup with c5+d6+e5 the best idea seems really a e6+d5 setup.

I played little bit aroung with it and liked it. White has 3 main answers (to 1. e4 c5, 2. Nc3 e6)
3. g3 where ...d5 seems after 4.exd5 or 4. Bg2 or 4. d3 in all varations OK.
3. f4 where d5 seems after 4. Nf3 or 4. Lb5+ or 4. d3 or 4.e5 also OK.

But the problem - alumbrado mentionned this - is indeed
3. Nf3 d5

Not after 4. exd5 or 4. Lb5, but whats about 4. d4??? Is this really a transposition into the bad French 1. e4 e6, 2. d4 d5, 3. Nc3 c5? Whats about 4...Nc6? Any ideas to make this variation playable?

Just checking the Rossolimo: the variation 3... Nd4 (1.e4 c5, 2. Nf3 Nc6, 3. Bb5...) has a too bad score to adopt it: over 70 % white is a major reason to not consider it.

Whats about some crazy idea? 
3... d5?
Or a e6+d5-setup to avoid a closed center?

What does black in the 3...g6-variation, if White delays Re1 and plays immediately 4. c3 Bg7, and then 5. d4??? This scores impressing 68 % for White! Probably should avoid this with 4...Nf6 instead of Bg7 what scores good numbers for black (e5, Nd5). Why then 60 % of people in the database insist on 4...Bg7?

So far I would say the best setup vs. the Rossolimo if you want to reach an open position, is 3...e6 aiming for d5. 
3...d6 I played the last 2 years: terrible dull, positions like in the closed Sicilian.
