The game in question
Naiditsch-Carlsen,Turin, 2006
was a serious tournament game
Naiditsch played the inferior 7.Ne6 iso 7.Nxf7!

Apparently Naiditsch was convinced enough to play
the variation as Black against Valejo-Pons the next year
in Heraklion (Crete).

As far as I know both were serious tournament games.
The game Gengisclown showed was taken from
Capelle la Grande 2012.

The variation may be used as a surprise weapon, counting
on the fact that your opponent will not know the theory
of such an off-beat variation. Obviously Naiditsch picked
the wrong person to spring his surprise.....

Well, that's why I mentioned Carlsen.
Anyway, yes thank you, Micawber, 14. Qe2 does seem to be the refutation...

This must have been a speed chess game, or perhaps an exhibition game.  I doubt if this variation was played for blood.

My Houdini gives after due thought 14.Be3 as best, but it seems being just a matter of taste.

This line is completely unplayable for Black IMO.

The position after white's 12th move had allready occurred in Vallejo-Pons - Naiditsch 2007 a game white won convincingly.
On the 14th move White has two alternatives:
14.Qe2 +/- James Howell
14.Nd2 +/- (perhaps less good than 14.Qe2) also seems sufficient to keep some advantage.

16.....Qf6+= seems better than the game continuation 16...Qh4 because after 17.Rf1 I dont see a decisive continuation for Black

Fascinating, thank you!  But is does seem that White erred badly on move 14, eh?

Spotted this line while perusing through the database...It's interesting to note that Carlsen has also played 6...h6

If 13.Qe1 then ... Ng5 14. Qxe5 Nxf3 15. gxf3 Rxf3+ 16. Kg2 Rf5 17. Qe4 Qg5+ 18. Kh3...while 13. d3 Bg4 14. Ke2 Rxf3 15. gxf3 Bxf3+ 16. Kxf3 Qh4 17. dxe4 Rf8+18. Ke2  Qf2+
19. Kd3 Rd8+....well you guys can check my analysis, such as it is...

yes 9Be2 is best for white if black plays 8..Bc5, well the primary illustrative game for the 9...Ne4 line must be Howell-Volzhin (Calcutta 1996) which continued ...

but black can deviate with 9... Rf8 instead of 9..Ne4 and in the notes to the above game Dolmatov suggests 8..Qd5 instead of 8..Bc5. Fritz also seems seems to prefer Qd5 when play might continue 9Nc3 Qxc6 10Be2 (Nxb5 is the materialistic option) Bb7 (maybe Bc5) 11Bf3 e4 12Nxe4 Nxe4 13d3 Bb4+ 14Kf1 where it looks like black will probly wind up a pawn down in the ending.

Someone, the wife of Igors Rausis if my memory serves, played 9...h5!? and won a nice game.  However I don't think that Black has full comp here either, and so far as I know, the experiment has ever been repeated.  Personally I think 6...h6 is somewhat dubious because of 7. Nxf7, and that Black probably does best to play 6...Nd4.

6...h6 7.Nxf7 Kxf7 8.dxc6 Bc5 9.Be2 Ne4 10.o-o and what now?

play ulvestad, it cuts down on whites options and how about trying 6...h6 instead of Nd4? in almost all cases black will get at least equality except after 7Nxf7 in which case things get rather murky. white is objectively better, but in practice the best prepared player will win

Heyken and Fette gave in Theorie der Schach-Eröffnungen tl-12, 1989, 14.Nxf5 Bxf5 15.g3 "und der schwarze Angriff dringt nicht durch."

I like the following line of the Ulverstad:

1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bc4 Nf6 4. Ng5 d5 5. exd5 b5 6. Bf1 Nd4 7. c3 Nxd5 8.Ne4 Qh4 9. Ng3 Bg4 10. f3 Nf5 11. Bxb5+ Kd8

It seems bad for black, because he can loose many pieces with e.g. Bc6 or fxg4. But I have analysed this line, and I think the position is unclear.

In one of my games followed:

12. O-O Bc5+ 13. d4 exd4 14. Ne4 Nfe3 15. Qb3 Bb6 16. Qxd5+? Nxd5 17. Bg5+ Qxg5 18. Nxg5 dxc3+ 19. Kh1 cxb2 20.Na3 bxa1=Q 21.Rxa1 Be6 22. Rd1 Ke7 0-1

All right, white made a mistake on the 16th move, but also in other continuations, the position is very difficult for white.

Does someone know this position after 11.Bxb5+ Kd8 ?
And does someone known some ideas in this position?

Indeed 12.d3 should be put in practice a few times, but after f7-f5 it seems to me, that Black has a strong bind on the centre. So my verdict is unclear, which is not bad at all for a Black gambit.
