Against 1 c4 I'd suggest playing 1.. e5 followed by Nf6/Nc6/Bb4 in some order (Khalifman recommends this in his Karpov book which has a Nimzo against d4).

Leaves 1 Nf3, maybe just play your standard moves as against d4 or set up a QID position.

If you wanna play Nimzo also look into the QID as that setup can be used against most other systems.

If nothing else works, a total pig-headed unwillingness to look facts in the face will see us through.

that's the whole problem with the nimzo i'm afraid. It can easily be avoided. If you are really insistent on Bb4, you need to learn the black side of:

1. c4 Nf6 2. Nc3 e6 3. e4!? (mikenas attack)

1. c4 Nf6 2. Nc3 e6 3. Nf3 Bb4 4. g4!? (krasenkov/ zviagintsev).

There is also 4. Qc2 and 4. Qb3 too.

You must know concrete theory for the mikenas (shariyazdanov's 12. Bh6!! is a case in point). But against the others you can simply play Bxc3, and set up a dark square blockade.

These lines are not ideal for black (surely worse than the nimzo proper!), but at least you can mostly play in nimzo- style. And if white tries the ultra-aggressive stuff you always get counter chances...

But I really prefer white in all these lines though!  Embarrassed

Not to mention if white starts with 1. Nf3 and delays Nc3 you are obliged to go into the hedghog if you've played both Nf6 and e6.

My recommendation is to learn the symmetrical english/hedghog proper. Then you'll never be move-ordered out of your repertoire.

What is the best way for a nimzo/bogo player to respond to 1. c4 and 1.Nf3.    What other defenses should I know that would be complementary.  I'm thinking QGD Tartokower but not really sure as the nimzo is new to me.

Thanks

Alan
