I have only played this line in Blitz: 1.f4 e5 2.fe Nc6 3.Nf3 g5 4.h3 d6, but given the choice I would rather face 5.d4 if only because it grants Black the complications he seeks.  Grin

The alternative 5.e4 is more positional in nature with White hoping for a slight edge in a Kings Gambit declined type position, while 5.d4 appears to be the  more critical move.

Critical does not neccessarily mean better though, and as HG has pointed out, after 5.d4 dxe5 things get very complicated, for example: 6.d5 e4 7.dc6 Bd6! could be quite dangerous for White.

This entire variation is so rarely contested in OTB competition that it is hard to make a difinitive assessment. More practical tests are sorely needed.  

Tom seems convinced that 5.d4 is +/-, but I have my doubts. Perhaps future posts will bring us closer to the truth.

The truth is out there.

How does White respond to 5 ... dxe5 ?  It seems to me that Black can develop quickly and dangerously...

TN: which would you rather face, 5 e4 or 5 d4 ?

Incidentally I have tested this already <including a win over an IM in a local game> and am fairly sure it IS +/-!

There are plenty of Bird lines where White can only hope for equality (and an equality that gives Black some dangerous counterplay), but I don't think this is one of those lines.  I've often wondered about the rationale of the From in general: give up two central pawns for a non-central pawn, and free White's problem piece, the dark-squared bishop.  There are a few tricks around a few corners, but careful navigation by White should generally lead to an advantage here, in my opinion.  In sum, I would happily take up the mantle of the White side in this position...

Patrik's example has caught on! I predict HgMan-TopNotch 1-0, as I cannot imagine, that the Bird is that easy refuted.

Henrik Danielsen has been on the losing end of a game in this line, but it had nothing to do with the opening, but rather a tactical error in the late middlegame.

1 f4 e5 2 fxe5 Nc6 3 Nf3 g5 4 h3 d6 5 e4 g4 6 hxg4 Bxg4 7 Bb5 Nge7 8 d4 dxe5 9 d5 and White is doing very well...

For Black I am quite partial to 1.f4 e5 2.fe5 Nc6!? 3.Nf3 g5. Grin

The above line seems to really unsettle Bird players for some reason. I wonder why?  Wink

Of course , but I supposed Black is a e4 player : so , he is rather glad to play a King's gambit
As for me , with Black I prefer this to a reversed Dutch

I don't understand why White "must" answer 2.fxe5 or 3.exd6.
2.e4 and 3.Nf3 dxe5 4.e4 are reasonable options.

For a player of e4 it's more convenient to play the 
From Gambit with the improvement 4...Nc6
