5...Bh6 wins back the pawn, but I am not sure it is that easy for Black. If White focuses on quick developement, including castling queenside, Black seems to have issues keeping pace with development. The following game demonstrates this plan.

[Event "Oberliga Sued W 0203"]

[Date "2002.10.??"]
[Round "6"]

[Black "Zimmermann, Klemens"]

[WhiteElo "2365"]
[BlackElo "2268"]

Welcome, Keith Hayward, to the Bird threads here on the Chesspublishing forum.  In preparing my repertoire, I made good use of your online analysis--thank you for making it available.

Looking forward to more insights...

4.h3, after 1.f4 e5 2.fxe5 Nc6 3.Nf3 g5, is such an ugly looking move.  I'd be amazed if White can get away with weakening the dark squares around his king so.

>> Btw, the troublesome 2...Bg4 mentioned in another bird thread could be handled as usual after 1.d4 f5 2.Bg5, I suppose.<<

I have never found 2...Bg4 to be troublesome (after 1 f4 d5 2 Nf3). Although White's best is probably to play like in a Classical line fashion with 3 e3  with Be2. I have often liked a quick Ne5 over Nimzowitsch's h3 as a game plan. Here is an example:

Hayward,K (2311) - GM Djuric,S (2586) [A03]
Midwest Masters Chicago IL (6), 18.03.1990
1 f4 d5 2 Nf3 Bg4 3 e3 e6 4 Be2 c6 5 0-0 Nd7 6 Ne5 Bxe2 7 Qxe2 Nxe5 8 fxe5 Qc7 9 d4 f6 10 e4 fxe5 11 exd5 cxd5 12 dxe5 Bc5+ 13 Kh1 Ne7 14 Nc3 a6 15 Bg5 Ng6 16 Rad1 Rf8 17 Qg4 Qc6 18 Qh5 Rh8 19 Ne2 Qb5 20 b3 d4 21 Nf4 Rf8 22 a4 Qc6 23 Nxg6 hxg6 24 Qxg6+ 1-0

It's an interesting question what white should do with his extra tempo.

As the Bird is probably too slow to actually promise white an advantage, other than the familiarity of the dutch-like positions. The dutch is a reactive set-up so not giving black time to 'weaken' himself first by choosing a plan, may be what makes it hard to prove an edge for white...

So, it could make sense to play 1.f4 d5 2.a3!? and then opt for a Leningrad with hopefully an extra tempo - this would entail knowledge of the Lenindutch with Nc6, as Na3 is more common than a3 in the Qe8 variation, and 1.f4 d5 2.Na3 strikes me as too weird.

Playing a4 in an Iljin-Bird is ambitious as it tries to keep the extra tempo when the 'reversed theory' is over - but isn't a5, Qe8, Na6 etc in the Iljin mostly waiting moves until white committs to one of the plans? And continuing with a4, Na3 etc may give white a solid position, but not much advantage...

Anyway, I checked if anyone has tried 2.a3

(Btw, the troublesome 2...Bg4 mentioned in another bird thread could be handled as usual after 1.d4 f5 2.Bg5, I suppose.)

and found 5 games, (+4 -1), which is too few to be significant. But at least in practice the extra tempo may be quite useful i the LeninBird...

E.g:

x...a5 is often useful move indeed, but not in the specific variation 1.d4 e6 2.c4 f5 3.g3 Nf6 4.Bg2 Be7 5.Nf3 o-o 6.o-o d6 7.Nc3 Qe8 8.b3 a5 9.Re1 Qg6? 10.e4.
That is why I mentioned 6.d3 c5 7.a4 Nc6 8.Qe1 (8.Ne5 is a known idea too, but even with colours reversed I am not enthousiastic about exchanging an import attacking piece) Re8 9.Qg3 e5.
Expert Keith Hayward usually prefers the straightforward 7.Qe1 and 8.Nc3.
Reading my previous post again, I notice that I have mixed up two variations: 6.d3 c5 7.Qe1 b5 8.Nc3 b4 9.Nd1 and 7...Nc6 8.Nc3 as recommended by Hayward.

I think White should play 7.Qe1 or 8.Qe1 to avoid the exchange of queens after e3-e4. This exchange only leads to equality. This is OK in the Dutch IZ of course, but not in the Bird IZ.

The book had the effect good books usually have: it made the stupids more stupid, the intelligent more intelligent and the other thousands of readers remained unchanged.

In the IZ, I've sometimes played a5, Na6 (and then to b4, c5 or perhaps c7 after c6) - it dampens white's initiative on the queenside. When my opponent doesn't play g3 and Bg2, I've tried b6 and Bb7. b6 supports a5, and in general a5 has seldom been a weakness (cf MNb's post). So I think a4 is a good move for white in a IZ-type set up in the Bird's.

I still like 7.a4, maybe instead of 8.Qe1 White should play more positionally, with 8.Ne5 to occupy the centre, and then look to play Nc3 (as and when a  tactical nuance against ...d4 appears, it will!) and e4 with a good game.

6.d3 c5 7.Qe1 Nc6 and 8.Qh4 does not look good. 8.a4 is one idea, but with colours reversed I am not too enthousiastic either. Another possibility is 8.Nc3 b4 9.Nd1 intending Nf2 and e4.
I am not sure, if 7.a4 is useful after Nc6 8.Qe1 (8.Na3!? and 9.c3) Re8 9.Qg3 e5 and compared to the IZ the pawn on a4 might turn to be a weakness.

I like 7.a4, always a useful move.

Another option is delaying d3, so the Bishop on e2 still controls b5. d3 has to be played at some point, but maybe after Black has already gone  b6. With this in mind 6.Qe1 is worth considering, but i'm not totally sure.

Basically I'd go with 6.d3, 7.a4!  8)

In my most recent cc tournament, I've been experimenting with the reversed I-Z as White.  My first moves have typically been f4 - Nf3 - e3 - Be2 - 0-0 - d3.  What comes next?  I appreciate that it probably depends to a certain degree on Black's play, but assuming I get a pure reversed I-Z, what is White's best with the extra tempo?

1 f4 d5 2 Nf3 Nf6 3 e3 g6 4 Be2 Bg7 5 0-0 0-0 6 d3 c5

I've tried Qe1, but received an unpleasant surprise in one game that continued 7 Qe1 Nc6 8 Qh4 b5!? and I ran into uncomfortable complications on the queenside.  I've been leaning increasingly toward 7 a4 since I have the extra tempo.  Thoughts?
