Chris' book is certainly suitable for many club players: not overly theoretical and plenty of explanation. It should also be pointed out that he covers several White options in the Exchange: one of his specialities.

I glanced at this at B&N the other day.  Pretty standard repertoire book based on Ward's own experience.  e4 vs. QGA (w/Bb3 in Nf6 line) Exchange vs. QGD with options- Nf3 and 0-0-0 or Ne2 and 0-0-0. Slav is 3.Nc3 and e3 with g4 line in anti-meran and b3 instead of trendy c5 in the e3 line of the a6 slav.  Overall its a pretty interesting repertoire and a decent book.

Well, that sounds fair enough Wink  I mean, if you wrote a book only for masters how would you make any money!

I'd like to find out more about this book and John Cox's upcoming Starting out: d4.

Hello john, did I just hear 5. Bg5 semi-slav in a "Starting Out" book?!  Shocked It took me a long time carefully and painfully scrutinising Informator, NIC, Ruslan's section, Pedersen and Sadler before I could confidently switch from 5. e3 to 5. Bg5, and i'm also not sure if a main line repertoire could fit in a "Starting Out" format (assuming you use lines like 7. Bc4 Grunfeld, 4. Qc2 Nimzo)...

Anyway, i think it will be interesting to see Ward's ideas on the QGA.. if he recommends 3. e4, i am curious to know how he fares against 3... e5!, which I think is most reliable and Black is very close to getting a draw in some lines. Can you tell us further what lines are recommended against QGD, Chigorin  etc.? Many thanks!

Actually, Inn2, I believe you're in luck on the first two. He goes for e3/Qc2 and then g4 on the s-Slav, I believe. For 5 Bg5 you could always wait for my own forthcoming Great Work Starting Out d4 (a White single-volume repertoire book using main lines).

I'm looking forward to this book, especially wishing he will recommend more aggresive options (e.g. queenside castling lines in the QGD, QGA 3. e4 or 3. Nf3 Nf6 4. Nc3, 5. Bg5 Semi-Slav etc).. but somehow i don't think this will happen!  Undecided

I've seen three different page numbers listed for this book in various places ranging from 175 to 208.  With such few pages to work with, I fear the coverage will be skimpy.  At least Chris Ward is an engaging author.  But I won't get my hopes up.

Thanks, John.  I had wondered whether it was a full repertoire book similar to Palliser's Play 1.d4.

Btw, it is out in the US (or at least the USCF is offering it), so presumably it is available in Europe too.

Yes, I just noticed this book is now available in the US.  Does anyone know what exactly it covers?  Is it just the QGD and QGA?
