But I am really impressed by your mentioning of a Denmark-Russia match. Denmark has actually never played Russia - meaning the post-Soviet (post-1991) Russia. So the match you remember must have been the Denmark-Soviet match in 1985 ending 4-2. 

I was just one of several qualifier matches for the 1986 World Cup, but Danish football fans (at least those more than 25 years old) remember it as one of the all-time greatest matches in the history of the Danish national team. Both teams played wonderful attacking football, the Danes being a little better. And the game - played on June 5th, Danish Constitution Day - included six beautiful goals. Even Today the match is still referred to as simply "the Soviet match" between Danish football fans.

And I am impressed that this match is known even in Colorado!

Another thing is that Denmark played the Soviets ten times through history and lost the other nine, including the return match in Moscow later in 1985 - but we really don't remember that 

Talking about obscure, but memorable matches: What about English Premier League (oops, that name was introduced in the 90's...) match Man United - West Bromwich 3-5, played December 30th, 1978. Back in those days the Danish public TV broadcasted an English Premiership (oops again) match (almost) every Saturday. This was just one of them, but it was really great, and the eight goals were repeated numerous times in the following years, when they had some time to fill out.

Best match ever: that is easy.
France-Portugal, semi finals EU-Ch 1984.
France had the fantastic midfield Platini-Giresse-Tigana. I have forgotten the names of the Portuguese alas. But all six were far superior to say David Beckham.
The referee had an very easy day, as there were hardly faults. Superbe technique, beautiful goals and two teams who were about equal.
A match of unequalled level.

@TalJechin: not that many Swedes became World Champion and won Olympic gold. So it is a shame, you do not know who Tommy Gustafsson is. Let me give you a hint: his sport is very popular in The Netherlands, less popular in Norway and hardly in other countries.

My favourites would include  Brazil-Italy -1970 world cup final, Brazil-Italy - 1982 world cup, Brazil - Holland (cant remember which world cup year, Holland lost 3-2 winner scored by Brazil's Branco), Holland -Argentina (cant remember the yr again, but Bergkemp scored a superb winner), Portugal-Holland -Euro 2004, Holland's games during 74 World cup were also quite a joy to behold.(based on the highlights shown)

have to admit i'm pretty much a Holland, Portugal  & Brazil fan. They play free flow attractive attacking  football in their own ways.

E.g: in Italy they still talk about the Gre-No-Li attacking chain, Liedholm then went on and trained Roma for several decades. Best keepers, we'll no one has mentioned Rio-Kalle from the World Cup final in 1958 or Ronnie Hellström from 1974. Central defenders like Glenn Hysén and Patrik Andersson would have fit in any star team. 

Clinical attackers should also include Martin Dahlin, Kenneth Andersson and Tomas Brolin all from 94, we didn't get too many chances to score but these guys sure scored when there was a chance. Van Basten etc were certainly strong but did miss a lot of the chances they were given...

And that's just Sweden, so far no one seems to have mentioned for example the Laudrup Brothers from Denmark...

Soccerwise though, there's hardly any country that can match Brazil.  Actually, in comparison with Brazil, both England and Holland would be more famous for their soccer hooligans - who *really* are outstanding in the world!

I would rather have Gerd Müller or Romario in my all time favourite team. Van Basten was technically very skilled of course, but to win a match you need absolute killers - strikers with Torinstinkt. Müller and Romario were the absolute top, even if they were unvisible during 88 minutes.

I always had the impression, that the Liverpool of Kevin Keegan mastered the concept of total football pretty quick.

Now for something else. The most beautiful goal I have ever seen is Cruyff's against Brasil in 1974. If you do not believe, go and stand on the backline halfway the cornerflag and try to kick the ball in the goal. Afterwards imagine what it is, to do this with three defenders and a keeper in between.

Finally, to comfort TalJechin with the lack of Swedish top football players: many Dutchies still remember Tommy Gustafsson. He certainly was absolute world class.

No English team plays Total football, not even many dutch teams. Currently only AZ plays something similar. On the other hand many dutch teams have taken over the tactics, but with more rigid position play. Most foreign teams which play attractive like Barcelona or Arsenal only picked up parts (such as the quick position shift).

BtW it was 1988, I can still see the Van Basten goal in the last minute against Germany
