I dont think its so surprising, MNb. Football, Cricket, Snooker & Lager are big in England.

As far as the Ashes are concerned, my gut feel says Aussies.

Cricket was always the best sport for the lazy sportsman that I am - it was not so demanding of speed and fitness as football or rugby and carried far less chance of getting injured, especially compared to rugby.

My school teachers were convinced, on account of my size, that I could be a very good second row forward, but I begged to differ, preferring the more cerebral pastime to which this website is dedicated.  The draughty school halls, community centres etc. in which most club chess seems to be played may not be the warmest places to spend a winter's afternoon, but they beat the half-frozen pools of mud which characterise the average British rugby pitch in February.

So instead of my ears and nose and ribs and knees taking a battering in the scrum, my pride and self-esteem took a battering on the 64 squares of the chessboard, as the remorseless logic of this game of games chewed up my pretensions of grandeur and spat them back at me.

Remarkable, that Alumbrado suddenly is a cricket fan. Whatever could be the reason?  Grin

Good to see England coming back after a looooooong rut Grin

I want them to win. Looks like Shane Warne keeps his 150 IQ brain in his pocket and fits it into his head only when he enters the field. It feels like 400 of those wickets are against England Wink

Well, it's finally here, the last Test in arguably the greatest ever Ashes series (or any other Test cricket series for that matter).  What do we think is going to happen?

As I write, England have just lost their fourth wicket on day 1 - not a great start.  And Shane Warne seems to be on fire.  In fact if it were not for Warne and, to a lesser extent, Brett Lee (with both bat and ball in both cases), this series would already have been decided in England's favour, imho.

Perhaps I am being unduly pessimistic after England's defeat by Northern Ireland at football, but my money would be on the Aussies to take this match and square the series at 2-2.  Still, it will be all the swetter to take the Ashes from them on their home patch in 18 months' time ...
