I read the book many years ago and I would recommend it for anyone up to 1900 ELO. Its a good read that contains loads of usefull and pratical advice for most players.
Sometimes the obvious is the hardest to see and when one reads it and looks at the examples a lot becomes clear.

You seem to be the only one on this site who has read it !

So, I tend to think that this is not a classic becaus if it were, we would have had much more comments about it  8)

Is it as good as Rowson's "Seven deadly chess sins", which I enjoyed very much ?

He also discusses things like the Hedge Hog structure and how to play it for both sides.

Don't underestimate psychology in chess. He also suggests that if after making a move you realise its a gross blunder, then its best to look confident and move away from the board.

Such advice may sound quaint, but it actually works sometimes. You would be surprised how many times mate in 2 or 3 is missed in tournament play among strong players.

As some famous player once said, noone ever won a game by resigning.

Such as ? Can you give us one or two ?

I don't remember the exact wording, but a couple of examples would be something like these:

to beat considerably stronger players (i.e. 'Heffalumps' in the book's own terminology Wink ) than yourself you should make the game as wild as possible as that would increase the possibility that the stronger player will lose control over the game...

when calculating variations in a better position, you shouldn't use too much energy on tempting long and complicated variations, but stay sound and logical...

I've only read the swedish edition and that was quite a while ago. But as I remember it, the book is full of useful advice, but mostly in the realm of chess psychology. Nowadays, I think most of the advice given are generally accepted 'truths', echoed in other chess books.

Though it's possible that he came up with some new ideas or even chess positions for the 2nd edition...  Undecided

Is the book only fun or is it worth the price for chess educationnal and improvment value ?

Playing chess is fun , but I don't want to buy a book about the latest jokes in chess !

Well, the blurb from Batsford claims that Webb had recently completed producing a new edition before he came to his untimely and unfortunate end.  I am inclined to think that even publishers would not fib about that under the circumstances.  So it should be a new edition of the book, rather than simply a reprint.

This book is to be re-printed for the third time by Batsford (visit: http://www.chrysalisbooks.co.uk/category/chessbooks/index.jsp).

It is said that this is a classic !

Do you agree with this ? Have tou read this book ? What do you think of it ?

I read it as an up and coming player, it was loads of fun and quite inspirational.

They probably reprinted it as a result of Webb's tragic death, the value and demand of books often sky rocket post humously.

And yes, the book can be considered a cult classic.
