I too had a "revealed" book (The Benko Revealed).
The structure of the book drove me nuts and the theory was quite light so I returned it...
IMHO this series is mediocre at best Sad though it's not McDonald's fault but mainly the publisher's.

A pity that Shaws book has been postponed. Like TN I was somewhat surprised to see this book get 5 stars on chesscafe. Its a decent enough book and quite up to date, but I didnt like the layout, the different variations are all over the place. Thankfully there is an index of variations at the back but it would have been better to give each main line a chapter rather than mixing everything about in chapters like 'Heroes and Zeroes'. A good book but not a great book, 4 stars would have been more than sufficient.

Palliser`s book on the Bb5-Sicilian is out. Deeming from the other books he has written I expect this book to be quite good!  Smiley

By the way, are there any books dealing with 1.e4 c5 2.Nc3 Nc6 3.Bb5?

If Shaw does bring out a book on the 3.Bb5 Sicilian, I would not even wait for it to be reviewed, I would just snap it up straight away.

Prolific writers who stray away from the Openings that they actually play or play against, are nearly always disappointing. These books are either a Data dump with superficial notes, a collection of well known games already analysed elsewhere or a rehash of established existing theory.

A good indicator of how much analytical work an author has really done is to see how many errors from previous works have been duplicated.

I would certainly loved Mr. Mc Donald himself to reply... may address him directly.

My considerations about buying this one are as follows:

1) I already have Pederssen and Chandler's DVD. Chandler praises Pederssen, I see neither as anything special...

2) I didnot like the Revealed format of the other book I have, Benko gambit revealed...

3) Carsten Hansen is a very good reviewer and I tend to follow his recommendations

4) Some other books by Mc Donald have been very good. The only one I find that it didnot add much to gallagher's is The Kings gambit. I was present in the few games he adds (Madrid 1997 Tournament) and the rest was very much what Gallagher had to say...

Also I knew a few things about the KG. So I would be more demanding in that specific area.

So, Mr. Mc Donald, what do you think your book adds to that of Pedersen?

IM Shaw has a book coming from QualutyChess but I am not sure when. He is a 3 Bb5 specialist.

IM Palliser's book on the opening is due in October from Everyman and can be found here:

I disagree - the material in Pedersen's book is quite out of date now and he does not cover all lines - for example, in the Moscow, against 2...d6 3.Bb5† Bd7 4.Bxd7† Qxd7 (probably the Main Line), he only covers the Maroczy Bind lines with c2-c4 as he is essentially writing from a White perspective.  McDonald is quite light on theory but he has done a very good job of presenting the key ideas - for both colours.

There is another, presumably more comprehensive, book coming out from another ChessPub contributor, Richard Palliser, fairly soon, too ...

Reading the review I just didnt get it.

I mean there is already an excellent book introducing players to the Bb5 Sicilian, its called 'Easy Guide to the Bb5 Sicilian' by Steffen Pedersen.

Is it really neccessary for another primer on this Opening, I think not. Seems like a waste of consumer dollars.

Anything written on this Opening in future needs to be done by an expert that plays it, that is willing to share some unique insights.

Conclusion: If you have Pedersen's earlier primer on this opening, then you have sufficient.

Carsten Hansen over at Chesscafe just gave Mcdonald's book on the Bb5 Sicilian his highest rating, 5 stars out of 5. See the link below for the page containing the review.
