Does anyone read the Kramnik series?

I'm planning to study the books and I'm in need of some advice...
The style "to get a slightly better endgame" is very much my cup of tea. I don't think it is so easy for any Black players to keep the balance against strong positional moves even until a slightly worse endgame.

I just had a glance at the variations but I can say that I don't like the treatment of the Modern move order.
1.Nf3 g6 2.c4 Bg7 3.e4 d6 4.d4
Now 4..e5 has a good reputation for Black.

I have the impression (from checking a few books) that 4...Bg4 has a better reputation than 4...e5.  ECO thinks the latter is well-met by 5. Bg5 f6 6. Be3; what thinks Khalifman?

The Kramnik Series had a number of move order holes in it I understand, and word on the street is the Anand series holds up much better to analytical scrutiny.

For instance in the Kramnik series the simple 1.Nf3 g6 2.c4 Bg7 appears to be a very awkward move order for the proposed repertoire.

Nevertheless, despite a few deficiencies here and there these two series are currently still the best repertoire books available on the market.

Two thumbs up.

I have any extra copy of the fifth volume in the series that wouldn't sell on Ebay if anybody is looking to pick up a copy at a cheap price.  The second one is actually the only one in the series that I'm missing.

Markovich,

Do you recommend that your novice students buy the series?  What level of player do you think would benefit the most from Khalifman's books?

Hello

Has anyone read the book by Khalifman ‘Opening for white according to Kramnik 2 (English) and what do they think?

Thank you

I think it's an excellent but slightly dated treatment, always from White's perspective, of the Symmetrical English and some other lines.  For the Symmetrical, you also need to have Book 3, which, as I recall, deals with 1. Nf3 c5  2. c4 Nc6 (Book 2 treats, as I recall, 1. Nf3 Nf6  2. c4 c5).  I have all five "according to Kramnik" books and I find them quite useful.

Hey Kiwi!

(btw, are you from Christchurch?)

I have all of Khalifman's Opening for White According to Kramnik books.  While I've been disappointed in some chapters and even entire books in the series, I can see that they would be extremely useful for a serious player looking for good lines in various openings.

I don't know how experienced a chess player you are, but I think the audience for the series is at least +2000elo.  If you think you're up to the challenge, it is indeed a good book.  You may be able to find others that are more worthwhile in the long run.

My personal favorites are mostly game collections.  Igor Stohl has two great books out now.  If you decide to get it, let us know what you think!

(Btw, if you want more specific info on vol. 2, just ask!)

A long time ago.
If I remember well it gives you a lot of hyperrefined lines against the nimzo-queen's-indian-complex (and siblings such as the tango an the hedgehog) which allow you to reach a slightly better endgame... Definitely  n o t  my cup of tea.
