@lost Highway

Where did you get this info? I thought he was ready for a match with Kramnik as early as Nov. That's the official stand thro' his manager.

I suppose Anand and Leko will both be wanting to prove themselves this time, while it's up to Topalov to prove himself a worthy champion.

Actually the field is full of players who'll need to prove themselves, like Ivanchuk, Kramnik and Adams...

This might be an even better tournament than San Luis! Smiley

If what I just read about Topalov is true, he will have the most to prove.  He allegedly has said that he doesn't need to play a match against Kramnik, because Kramnik is rated only #7 and will be some 60 points lower than him.  Maybe that's that's just an early negotiating tactic.  If not, he's a jerk.

I put my money on Ivantsjuk. His nerves are too weak, to become WCh ever. In a tournament like this he will be able to make chess look like an extra-terrial game.

Will be interesting to see some Tiviakov dragons against the top players, maybe he will play some of Dearing's recommendations Shocked

I am rooting for King Loek. In recent times Van Wely has stopped becoming the sitting duck in these elite events, and has obtained respectable scores. There is nowhere to go but up anyway.

Aronian and Bacrot are about my age so hope that they do well too. I  suspect this tournament will be the start of a new world order in chess, with many older players like Adams, Ivanchuk, Kamsky and Gelfand making way for the younger ones Smiley

By the way,

I'm rooting against Kamsky from now through the end of the millenium.  He and his father really gave chess a black eye and I don't like his on-the-board aesthetics either.  What's with playing out absolutely dead dead lost positions against top flight players?  Does he really think these guys are going to lose some of these?

There's a difference between fighting spirit and boorishness that Kamsky just doesn't seem to get.

I wonder why Svidler, Polgar, Morozevich and Kasimjanov weren't invited or chose not to participate, was the list made before the San Luis tournament?

Also, the timing of this tournament is going to be very interesting if a match between Topalov and Kramnik is going to be in the works during the tournament.  I imagine that both parties will want a date set for their match before the end of the year so that FIDE can come in and screw it up.

Errr, I mean "so that FIDE can re-schedule its world championship cycle."  That doesn't sound much better, does it?

There are still so many questions that need to be answered, maybe Corus will see a lot of back-room finagling and someone other than Kramnik or Topalov will win.  (Notice that Anand has the highest FIDE rating in this list!)

I hope Adams does well. To me he is still among the top five in the world today despite rating, hydra, San Luis and 2005 Cry

This is going to be a fascinating tournament, as there are a few participants who want to settle some things - like not being invited for San Luis. A few others, who did, will want to challenge Topalov's supremacy. I smell blood!

Also, January 13 is not that far away.  Why is Svidler not playing?

This IS an interesting lineup.  It will be quite interesting to see how Ivanchuk performs--he's had a very good year, but has been absent from the topflight tournaments for awhile.  And Kamsky's return should be worth watching (though I suspect he'll keep drawing--he seems to have lost that killer instinct).  And this could be Karjakin's entry into the top level.  All good...

Yes, I know. It's long until the tournament starts, but I think the list of participants in group A is very interesting.

Name Country Rating Position

GM Viswanathan Anand IND 2788 2
GM Veselin Topalov BUL 2782 3
GM Peter Leko HUN 2751 4
GM Vassily Ivanchuk UKR 2748 5
GM Vladimir Kramnik RUS 2739 7
GM Etienne Bacrot FRA 2725 9
GM Levon Aronian ARM 2724 10
GM Michael Adams ENG 2718 12
GM Boris Gelfand ISR 2717 13
GM Sergey Tiviakov NED 2700 20
GM Ivan Sokolov NED 2696 21
GM Gata Kamsky USA 2690 23
GM Sergey Karjakin UKR 2658 44
GM Loek van Wely NED 2648 55

Will Topalov do another great tournament? How about Ivanchuk and Kramnik, who didn't play in San Luis? Aronian is a player who has increased his rating. (I wish Naiditsch was playing too.) Also interesting to see how Kamsky will perform.

Don't check me with no lightweight stuff.
