I recall reading some time ago (maybe a couple of years) that Bauer was writing a book on the Philidor which was to be published by some new French (I think) chess publishing firm, which planned to publish books in English, French and German.  Presumably that whole undertaking fell by the wayside.

According to an interview by GM Christopher Lutz (who is one of the editors) the translation of an english version
has already been finished and the english version will be avaiable "in some weeks"?!

Complimentary review by Hansen in his popular Checkpoint column.  Hoping for an English translation someday though as I know very little German.

I've recently gotten myself a copy, and to me it looks quite good, though I only understand about 70% of the german - but that seems sufficent as he doesn't have too long sections with only text. After leafing through it during a couple of days I haven't seen anything that would put me off the Antoschin, despite that many people here at chesspub seems rather prejudiced against it.

Actually, after reading Kaufman & Davies I don't really see why 2...Nc6 should be so obviously best.

As black against people 'you should beat' ratingwise there's plenty of lines that either burn out quickly or result in boring symmetry or worse (Italian with Nc3, 2 Knights or Bishop's Opening with d3 or the 4Knights/Belgrade) leaving you with the task of trying to grind down an unwilling opponent.

And against players 'you shouldn't beat', you end up in marginally worse endings/middlegames in the Spanish or Scotch...

While by not blocking the c-pawn with 2...d6 you get more tension and assymetry and for a longer duration. Plus ready made counter play against pawn e4 with Nf6, Re8, a6+b5 etc or simply playing for the break d6-d5 - and all this without the forcing lines of the Petroff where there's some quite dry lines as well.

Besides, there's not any hyper sharp variations early on that white can force you into either - like the 2 Knights with 4.Ng5, which you must know but rarely face.

So, what's so fantastic about 2...Nc6? I really don't get it!
