I`ve had the idea to go for similar pawn-structures as white and start 1.d4, just as you mention Smyslov-fan.  It struck me as something that might suit a true french-defence player well although there is no P-K5 pawn to put under pressure.

Of course Grin
That is the way I learn my openings, only disadvantage being I dont play every day. I got the idea long time ago by the way you make an unthinking system (a matchbox) never lose tic-tac-toe

Willempie, great advice!

Personally, I play the Queen's Gambit as White.  I see some similarities in pawn structure when I play d4 c4 e3 in the QGD.  Of course, White is better in the QGD than Black is in the French because White can get the Queen's Bishop into play very forcefully, and White doesn't have to worrry about an opposing pawn on his king-4 square.  Please excuse the descriptive notation, but in this rare case, it makes more sense than algebraic.

Play the variation you feel most uncomfortable with as black. At the very least you get a better idea what to do against it as black.

What does a french player play when he's on the other side of the board ? Is there anything that leads to similar type of positions ?

I must admit more than a passing interest in the Alekhine-Chatard Attack! I love this system as it goes along with my violent tendencies. It gives up a pawn but in return you get a lot and i mean a lot of initiative. I tried everything against a friend of mine who has played the french for about 5 years now and couldnt dent him till i found this line. Now we have a persoanl french rivalry when ever we meet at the board. No matter what color we are respectivley the opening is always the same we will both open with 1.e4 and both will replu with 1...e6. Him an exchange variation me a deadly variation.

Good luck at finding what fits though. Its always a difficult task.

It's difficult to find same ideas as White..except if White wants kindly give his opponent a space advantage.

But if you like Black position in the Exchange: 1.e4 e6 (Black wants to play French) 2.d4 d5 3.exd5 exd5 4.Bb5+ c6 5.Bd3 (White is playing French)  Embarrassed
