Everywhere else ive seen discussing this topic, its betn Fischer & GK. So it seems that absolute domination was their criteria for 'Greatest'

Over here at chesspub where all kinds of other criteria has been added including being some kind of saint, we find that so far no one has a claim to being the 'Greatest' at least during the 20th century. Every player or Wch either having some kinda personality flaw, being a great neurotic, or posseses some moral shortcomings or being helped by favourable circumstances or aids or just wasnt dominant enough bla bla bla. So if thats the case, then we are back to sq 1-Morphy!

So what will it be? Do we define the Greatest as absolute domination like the rest of the world? if so then its between Fischer & GK. If we want to be different & follow the 'official' Chesspub criteria it is only Morphy.

Or does anyone even want to nominate an engine?? Tongue

If any thing, it was not relative TJ. Those 3 or 4 players were number one multiple times, in terms or rating. Every one of them were wining some tournamnet or the other. Fischer was No 1 much before he became world champion. No. By no streatch of imagination WC implies domination. Tal's and Botwinik's domination is akin to Kramnik's domination. No. Being great (yes  Wink ) player or WC is not sufficient.

Were they great players? Yes. Were they WC ? Yes. Did they have absolute domination over a peer group? No.

If absolute domination is the criteria, we have only Fischer and Kasparov. If you reduce the bar to near domination Anand wins hands down.
Cheesy

So the verdict of this forum could be that nobody from 20th century is a great chess player. Let alone "The Greatest" Wink

I'll let it pass. I have said enough to antagonise the entire forum in one thread.

BTW, when did Botwinik or Tal dominate the chess field the way Fischer or Kasparov did?

Well everything is relative of course. I'd say Tal dominated in 1959-61. That Botvinnik dominated during his reign, despite the interruptions, was something I thought obvious.

Fischer was at his top 1970-72 and didn't play too much in those years. And after '72 he didn't dominate at all, except the gossip columns... - So did he dominate all that much, really?

Karpov should probably be included, as he did win *a lot* of tournaments during his reign (without cheating!) and even after losing his title he was for many years the only one who gave Kasparov a fight. Actually,  their worldch matches and tournament encounters are very close until 1993 when Karpov starts to slowly decline due to age, except for that fantastic Linares tm he had.

But Kasparov is probably the strongest player so far, though there seems to be only one person here who thinks he was the Greatest...

By the way, castlerock, if we should only look at the play on the board as you say, then isn't really Deep Blue (or Hydra etc)  the strongest ever - at least over the board? Wink

Or for that matter, any +2700 player combined with a computer should be stronger than Fischer or Kasparov ever was, so maybe the whole discussion is obsolete already...

If these are the criteria, I will just repeat myself. Philidor wins hands down for reasons I mentioned earlier.

"has Karpov been mentioned" Havent seen his name yet. probably his only fault would be some of the stuff he pulled off in retaliation to Korchnoi's shades or that he was a commie, or calling Illiumzhinov a d*ickhead recently. But if these are not regarded as obstacles to greatness, I dont see why we should not include him. But with regards to being pro active representative I didnt see that during his reign. Its only in recent years he has been promoting chess.

With rgds to Tal - he didnt really dominate did he? poor health not withstanding. Shortest reign an Wch in history. Botvinnik? He has benefitted a lot from the Botvinnik rule right, which in some sense was unfair to the rest who had to requalify as challengers?

No. He did not do it. He moved the knight to one square and then seeing the move loses moved it to another square. The point of discussion was whether he removed the fingers are not. Anyway, that’s a moot point, imho. For a player of Kasparov’s stature, even moving the piece to two squares (being unsure of himself) is in itself acceptance of defeat. Whether it is sufficient to trash him and not acknowledge his on board greatness is another point.

BTW, when did Botwinik or Tal dominate the chess field the way Fischer or Kasparov did?  ???I thought the period from Alekhine’s death till 1970 was a period when no individual was able to dominate. Botwinik, Tal, Fischer, Smyslov, Spasky the number one spot went round and round in circles.

It seems to me that we all(?) agree on the following candidates:

Botvinnik
Morphy
Tal

According to the suggested criteria:
Quote:
Consistant good play, absolute profesionalism in regards to the game,  a very pro-active represenative of the game,  reasonable conduct in regards to the game, the fans, & other profesionals. Also a domination of the game that has been unmatched . I think the greatest must fit the above mentioned criteria.

Runners up:

Keres - didn't really dominate his era.
Topalov - has yet some domination left to be done.

Has Karpov been mentioned?

I think there was a video record of the alleged "touching" but no conclusive "touching" could be clearly seen in the slow-motion, close-up pictures.

as I recall it:

1) Kasparov demanded and got the video from the organisers before anyone had seen it, and since he never made it public himself one can draw one's own conclusions...

2) eyewitnesses quoted in the press at the time all supported Polgar's version of first moving one piece and then putting it back and moving another one.

If anyone here still have the sources of the time or seen it on the web somewhere, feel free to comment if I've got it wrong somehow...

So Morphy looks good for now.

but what abt MNb's take on Capa "Finally most of his best wins were against weaker opponents." Isnt it also the case with Morphy? The reason he was so dominant was that most of his opponents were sub std. Probably the best at that time was Staunton & Anderrson. Morphy whacked Andersson & Staunton conveniently avoided Morphy.

I think that the above might be the final test for Morphy's claim for being the greatest, since being mad is not an obstacle to greatness & he fulfills the other criteria well.
Also a domination of the game that has been unmatched .
If we apply just this crideria to 20th century players we can exclude every one except Fischer and Kasparov Grin

So there are no great players in 20th century, only strong players. Wink

If we remove this clause to what MNb quoted from a previous poster, Anand scores very heavily. So, Anand is the Greatest all-time chess-player of 20th century?  ??? Even I wont agree.Cheesy

Yes, as MNb says, Morphy fits the bill very well.

Why can't madmen be great?
Moreover, during his chess years Morphy was still sane - something I would not say of Fischer.

Personally I think Capablanca way too arrogant. Someone who claims, that he had proven chess to be dead by draw, imo cannot be the greatest. Moreover he has only played two matches for the title. The first one was an easy walkover - several others could have beaten Lasker to. The second one he lost immediately. Then Capablanca won only two important tournaments during his reign. Finally most of his best wins were against weaker opponents.
Play through all Capablanca-Rubinstein games and be relieved, that these two never played a match.
I fully agree with Spielmann's comment on Capablanca: Das tote Punkt.

I like Morphy, but people would probably argue that he became mad. Pretty much with my favorite-Fischer unfortunately.

Perhaps Capablanca. If i'm not wrong I think he's the player with the least career losses. He also had an unbeaten streak lasting for some years iirc.

Such a pity, my hero misses no less than two of these criteria!
According to these, Paul Morphy pops up.

This is interesting but are we becoming so focused on certain issues outside of the criteria that we can not see the forrest from the trees?

In my very humble opinion the 'greatest' player of all should meet the proper criteria! Consistant good play, absolute profesionalism in regards to the game,  a very pro-active represenative of the game,  reasonable conduct in regards to the game, the fans, & other profesionals. Also a domination of the game that has been unmatched . I think the greatest must fit the above mentioned criteria.

Lets say for example out of the blue a dominating player emerged. He destroyed the competition on the board like no other before him. He aquires the world title and thus his reign begins. During his rise to the top & his reign he plays politics, he bad mouths & insults the competition, the fans, & the game itself. His conduct at the board borders on out & out cheating! Despite all of this he dominates the game like no other! Would he be classed as the 'greatest' of all time? I don't think so! The word tyrant would be a more apt description!

"Greatness' to me means so much more then just dominating the game! It means to dominate the game in a special sort of way that stirs the imagination of the fans! He brings a fresh new perspective to the game & attracts new players to the games in droves! His conduct is one of a profesional! So given this high bar we have set who fits the new criteria or comes the closest to it? The person or persons that do come closest are the greatest of all time!!!!!!!!

I notice that several people have talked about Kasparov "touching a piece" and then not moving it in his game against Polgar as if it was a FACT and it actually happened.  I don't recall all of the details, but I'm pretty sure that it was never proven, and that Kasparov never admitted that he touched the piece.  Therefore, it really is not a FACT, but merely an unproven allegation.  I think there was a video record of the alleged "touching" but no conclusive "touching" could be clearly seen in the slow-motion, close-up pictures.  Polgar may honestly think that Kasparov touched the piece; Kasparov could just as honestly think that he did not. The cameras don't lie, but in this case, I think the photographic evidence was inconclusive.  I think any discussion that suggests that it is some kind of "fact" that Kasparov touched a piece and then made an illegal move is unfair.
