interesting transposition..
perhaps it might be usable if one is annoyed by those who play 3. Nf3 against the Scandinavian?! not sure of this though..

Wisnewski is right on the caro advance 3... c5, 4. c4! is very dangerous.

Although I do not understand why anyone would want to avoid the Scandinavian as White, I'd like to get your attention on the Caro-Kann Advance Variation again.

It has been mentioned before that after 1.e4 c6 2.d4 d5 3.e5 Black can play 3...c5!? when the position after 4.dxc5 is probably not what every player would like to play with White.

However, there is an interesting alternative in 4.c4!? - A quite illustrative game is Rublevsky - Asrian, Moscow Aeroflot op 2004; Black was getting squished there.

Right. Always amazes me, how easy it is to work out alternative move-orders which make sense...
Opening 'theory' seems to be very haphazard...

I tried a similar transposition in Cork earlier this year: 1.e4 c6 2.d4 d5 3.Nc3 dxe4 4.Nxe4 Qd5, here white hasn't 4.c4 and you get one move closer to the time control...
Otherwise, the point is mostly psychological and of course an offer to go nontheoretical, should white play e.g. 5.Ng3.

While after 3.exd5 Qxd5 you have managed to avoid the Panov Attack, which should count for something...

Shocked
Apologies for my SECOND post in this thread, just ignore it! (gone absolutely mental for some reason - I'm not sure what I was trying to say having read it again the next morning, I can play 3... Nd2 after all)

The original post stands however ... my sincere apologies.

@Tater_Salad, just re-phrasing the original post, is there a (definite) reason why Black plays 3... Qd5 (after 3. exd5) via the Caro route compared to 2... Qd5 via the Scandinavian route. The insertion of an earlier ... c6 holds the key here.

i don't really understand the question. you say you want to use that move order to avoid the scandanavian, but the deviation is on black's part. if black wants to play the scandanavian, then why not just play it? if white wants to avoid the scandanavian, there's more way to do that with a caro move order than just the advanced variation. i don't quite understand what you're getting at.

@Bonsai - interesting, the obvious way of avoiding the Scandinavian altogether via the route I mentioned is to play the following

1. e4 c6 2. d4 d5 3. e5 (Advanced Caro)
but Black may enter the following setup

3. ... c5 (!?/?!) 4. dc e6
which can be awkward(?) for White Caro Kann players.

For me as White, against the Caro Kann, I normally play 3. ... Nd2 but I don't wish to get into the Advanced Caro Kann if I can help it via the above route.

What do other people think?

If there's anything wrong with that move order, then 4.Nc3 has to be the place to find an improvement (obviously), my idea would be that either 4.Nf3 or 4.c4 look interesting. But that's just going by the fact that this looks a bit like 1.e4 d5 2.exd5 Qxd5 3.Nf3 or 3.d4, in both of those cases black really doesn't want to play c7-c6 (but rather Nc6, in case of 3.Nf3 not immediately though).

Can this move order be exploited at all to prevent an opponent to enter one of the lines in the Scandinavian ?

1. e4 c6 2. d4 d5 3. ed Qd5 (! - if Black wants a Scandinavian) 4. Nc3 Qa5 etc.

Compare this with the usual line via

1. e4 d5 2. ed Qd5 3. Nc3 Qa5 4. d4 c6 etc.
