For me, 1.e4 does have an advantage (albeit a small one over 1.d4) but either way it's the first move is the telling move - a bit like darts where the first person who starts is more likely to get the pot at a double in the end.

To me, the point is there is no point. If you happen to be a player who likes open games best you have no choice but to open with 1. e4 (or 1. Nc3), even though statistically it does look less attractive than the other main line options (1. c4 and such). It is your personal statistics that count.

I don't think e4 will ever be proven to be an inferior type move. E4 is just a sharper opening since one starts gunning for the kingside asap! This leads to play where one false move and you have had it against best play! Hence the groans when the move c6 appears from all the e4 attacking types! D4 is mainly a slower type of game, though some exceptions do exist, where both players kind of sit, wait, develop, & then proceed. I belive d4 is more forgiving of opening mistakes then e4!! C4 is great for the transpositional possibilities & does require a good deal of knowledge on how to handle & to take full advantage of............

Hi all,
        I've had some interesting discussions on this particular topic.  The main theme running through them was that after 1 e4, there are problems dealing with the mainline of the Petroff and Marshall Gambit.

It's also proving difficult to prove an advantage in various sicilian lines (Najdorf/Sveshnikov), so will 1 e4 one day be proved to be an inferior move?

Not intending to prove anything here, just adding my twopennethworth.  Hope this helps.

Before this site crashed, some loonies were babbling on and on about 1.e4 Nf6 2.e5 Ng8!  Were you one of them?  I think that may be one of the reasons the site crashed.  It got overloaded with junk and dreck openings.  It made the server puke its guts out.  Grin

You cant possibly be serious! Since when did Alekhine's move 'refute' 1.e4?? Thats like saying some Indian defense refutes 1.d4.

Obviously 1.e4 is not the best move because Alekhine's refutation 1...Cf6. Smiley

"Every pawn move weakens the position" (...probably said by Nimzovitch). 1.Nf3 seems the best move for White taking the precedent axiom into account.

i remember reading that the statistically best move is 1. d4... 

and don't alot of 1. c4 games transpose into 1. d4 lines anyway?

Average of what?

I did a check with my own database (based on TWICs)  a while ago and iirc found that whites best opening move according to statistics were 1.c4!... (while 1.e4 was the worst out of e4/d4/c4/Nf3...)

There are always a lot of but's and if's behind all statistics..... Tongue
