Hello,

Recently picked up the original "Endgame Lessons" second-hand. Anyone, know if the "Rate your Endgame" book has more material, other than being in a different format?

Bye John S

"I for one will say that he wrote perhaps the BEST book on endgame technique for club players (maybe 1400-2100 strength)."
Averbach also wrote a very good one. The title is something like What every players should know about the endgame. It is the best I know - but I don't know Mednis'.

The book had the effect good books usually have: it made the stupids more stupid, the intelligent more intelligent and the other thousands of readers remained unchanged.

About Mednis, I for one will say that he wrote perhaps the BEST book on endgame technique for club players (maybe 1400-2100 strength).  I still think Rate Your Endgame should be a classic; it's not a comprehensive theoretical guide to endings (and it's not meant to be), but it's an excellent book on the art of actually playing[i] endings.  I personally think it's better than Shereshevsky's [i]Endgame Strategy, at least for players in that given rating range.

Not only the hypermoderns criticised Tarrasch (only Nimzo was scoffing), but also Spielmann and later Euwe. Their main point was Tarrasch' dogmatism and I am afraid they were right. One example:

Capablanca-Spielmann, New York 1927
1.d4 d5 2.Nf3 e6 3.c4 Nd7
Einer von den "krummen" Zügen, die jetzt so modern sind (Tarrasch in Münchener Neuste Nachrichten 80, 1927, nr.56).
Which such comments he cannot have expected popularity.

Tarrasch is of course the prime candidate. Not only is he largely forgotten as an author, he also became the target of scoffing of the hypermoderns.

He is best known for his victory over Fischer.....which is sad! GM Mednis has authored some truely masterful works on various aspects of chess! The funny thing is his works have to be the most overlooked in chess period! I'M sure there maybe other great but overlooked authors but GM Mednis has to be at the front of the list...... Undecided
