I think it is because there is very occasionally no space between the end of one game and the start of another, the games are there when I download them and the PGN code looks fine. Smiley
P.S. I have just added some new lines where they were missing - it should work OK now. Wink

I found something strange in pgns downloaded.
I have two examples, apparently all the rest is OK.

Everything started because after pgn downloads the total number of downloaded games didn't match with the total number of games online.

I have access to 6 sections: e4e5 french opensicilians e4 dpan and nimzobenoni

Case I
From the search mask select only ECO B20 to B49.
The mask says 411 games.
ChessAssistant 8.1 says 410 games
Chessbase9 says 407 games
Bookup finds errors in pgn
Normal32 finds errors

Case II
From the search mask select only ECO C20 to C49.
The mask says 364 games.
ChessAssistant 8.1 says 363 games
Chessbase9 says 364 games
Bookup says 363 games
Normal32 finds errors

I believe there is some severe error in some pgn comment (very few games in any case).
I will let you know where i found the errors when i know more.

Giorgio

OK, we can certainly put it on the Home page as well. Smiley
The PGN Games Archive is constantly updated - every time an update arrives the games are immediately uploaded. I think the date range refers to when the games were played rather than when they were annotated, but I could be wrong?! Undecided

This is what i was supposing, and it's correct in any case having the games with their original date.
So the question is - both for pgn search and chesspub - how can i get the new games safely added to the complete database?
The only reply is "get everything in some way, and then update with the montly pgns".
So probably the only real usage of these is if somebody doesn't want an offline database, otherwise they are going to be used only for a not-so-comfortable download-everything-once usage and then dismissed.
I have downloaded everything i am entitled to, now i will use the monthly pgns to update.

Summarizing my opinion about pgn search, as an online search tool it's nearly perfect now.
As a way to maintain an offline database it lacks at least an information: let's call it "release date".
But this would be a sort of duplication of the gamesddmmmyy.pgn files.
IMHO you should decide what pgnsearch should be used for, and this will tell you if you need to change something (and what) and how popular it will become.

I have a question about pgn search form.
When are pgn games added to the searchable database?
After downloading all the games with zero dates (getting blocks by ECO code) and downloading year or six month blocks (to remain under 500 games) today i tried to download from March 11 to Marc 11 2006, to get only the last day.
I expected to get the pgn games of the new d-pawn specials, but nothing.
Tried to download all the pgns of march 2006, but nothing.
Did i do something wrong or there is still some problem?

Suggestion for a little improvement.
The PGN search page can be reached only by entering a section: since it's a global, common function (always the same) it would be nice having it also on the home page at http://www.chesspublishing.com/content/.
Thanks for the attention.

When the programmer finished the PGN games archive (which I only thought of as a 'Beta version') we expected that subscribers would find faults and suggest improvements, however, I think a lot of long-term subscribers have gotten so used to ChessPub.exe that not many subscribers have given the Games Archive a proper go yet, at least that is the only reason I can think of for such a limited reaction to it so far! Undecided
Apparently the 'From' and 'To' dates only went up to 2005, and there was also a problem with it picking up games without dates (in the form 00-00-00) - thanks to Georgio for pointing these out, so we have the programmer working on this at the moment.
We have also asked him to add a couple of other small improvements (for instance, if there is a lot of pages it would be better to see '1,2,3 ... 49' rather than have all 49 listed?!) however, if anyone has any other thoughts this would certainly be a good time to mention them! Smiley
Regarding sending the PDFs, CBVs, PGNs by email with the 'email notification's system - obviously this would be far more complicated than for 'Chess Today' say, which only sends out the same set of files to everyone each day - we would have to send out different files depending on which sections were subscribed, which type of files were wanted, etc. Still, it might be worth looking into?!
Do any other chess sites use RSS? I have heard a lot about it but haven't seen it in action yet. Roll Eyes

I made some more test.
Now the years are OK, the players are OK, the ECO codes are OK, so you can extract games for a player with one or both colors, with a date range, an ECO range, an Elo range, a result, Annotator, all the fields are supported and everything works together, this is powerful.
If email delivery is a problem, and apparently nobody is missing this feature i can survive without it.
Thinking of RSS i was not thinking specifically to chess: java programming, gardening, bungee jumping and chess are more or less the same thing for RSS Smiley.
But you are right, probably this is another feauter chess enthusiasts don't need right now: probably when this will become a need the standard forum softwares will offer it in a simpler way, so like above i can survive without it.
Thanks for the prompt support fixing all the problems, now i can uninstall chesspub.exe from my desktop! Smiley
Obviously if i will see some possible improvement i will send you my suggestions, but i believe that now i will have to concentrate on the contents for a while...

How would you get, say, Kasparov's games with Black using the King's Indian from ChessPub.exe? Undecided

It's not working.
There was also a couple of problems in the date range: one is fixed, the other will be soon, hopefully.
Once OK it's a BIG improvement compared to chesspub.exe IMO.
The players filter too needs a fix, and probably a general check-up is a good idea.
Better than this i can see only the capability to receive pdf cbv and pgn updates by email if desired like already happens for email notifications.
It's the way ChessToday and TwicTheory work.
Also RSS would be nice.
I have dozens of sites to visit, it's like a job nowadays.
Nothing to say about the contents of the 12 sections, i'm pretty satisfied with the 6 i'm subscribed to.

I would look for E8-E9 games and sort on alphabetical order for black players - or simply download games and use CB Light to do the search  Roll Eyes

i hardly use it since chesspub does everything for me..

But it will be useful for those travelling to tournaments overseas, and who can't access computers with Chesspub installed. For this group of subscribers, the ability to access the PDF files and the PGN Archive should be convenient.  Smiley

What do ChessPublishing subscribers think of the new 'Games Archive'?
How can it be improved?
How does it compare with the ChessPub.exe program? Undecided
