i think chess could get some decent air on cable with some of the more screwball formats. i'd watch a million dollar bullet bughouse event.

Some valid points...on the issue of educating the masses to the game of chess this can be done. Firstly who says we have to have top GM's getting all the coverage hmmmm Wink WEould it not be easier to sort of ease folks into chess by having some average players bashing heads at the board & have GM analyisis to point out the errors and why they are errors? A sort of cleverly hidden series of chess lessons. With clever editing this can be acomplished in a rather quick time span. Then you could slip in some of the worlds top GM games, a few IM games, master level games and some patzer stuff. While chess is not challenging in say the obivious physical way the amount of tension at the board, which we have all felt & one that I love so dearly, can be conveyed.

I'm not naive enough to think that Chess will be as big as Texas Hold Em but there is a huge untapped audience out there of closet chess fans who just don't know it yet Cry!

  fasion.

There's nothing anyone can do to stop cheating because cheaters can avoid detection by using a second computer or pocket fritz it doesn't look good for the game when Grandmasters and  International Masters are being caught using them so it's not just the 1200 and 1300 rated players abusing them!  Playchess recently caught IM Kurtenkov using computer assistance in the champion challenge shame on any titled players who cheat with engines nobody this good has any acceptable reason or excuse for using a program
to win their games!

well, there's no question that chess promotion could be a lot better. i think the one thing chess could take from the world of poker marketing is the time formatting of the presentation. poker tournaments are horribly slow with tons of stalling and folding over and over, but its not presented that way, because people don't want to watch all that. its all filmed, and then edited, and its really more like a highlight film with some analysis. you'd think that would be the pretty obvious way to present chess, but i guess not.

i still don't think it would make that much difference though. nomatter how you present chess, its simply impossible for a novice to even begin to comprehend a game between two world class players, so it really isn't all that likely to suck them in. poker, on the other hand, is very easy to follow, even if you're not very good. you have to be skilled to win a big prize, but you don't have to be skilled to enjoy watching someone else do it.

the way i see it is this. when it comes to competition that isn't particularly athletic, people just don't usually care unless they themselves play. ever meet an avid golf fan that didn't golf? i haven't. poker's marketing cornerstone is that its so easy for a non-player to become a player. with chess its the opposite.

Rotgut does make some interesting points though.....the counterpoints are also equally important. The bottom line is we live in an instant gratification society. Chess does take a great deal of time & study just to understand but that in no way should be the end all be all. Firstly, I'M from the old crowd of Texas Hold 'Em ala pre Rounders days. Before that motion picture most folks were lucky if they could play 7 card with any semblance of the 'real' rules of poker. The reason for Hold Ems success is it is a game with just some basic rules that are easily understood by all. I can say I have worked a great deal on my poker game but it is a kicker when you get nailed by some first time rube. This, despite what many people may think, happens very often at the tables! Chess differs in that there is no luck element...no element of chance just pure skill. This is something that can be hyped on if presented just right in the media. Rotgut is correct in that a huge majority of people in the US know the game of chess & do like it alot but do not devote any time to it because it has not been shown in the proper light.

Look at Pro golf.....years ago the vast majority of folks would rather watch paint dry than watch a golf tourney on television. What has happened.......with a great presentation in the media golf is booming. It has its own network 'The Golf Channel' running 24-7 & people are taking up the game in mass. Golf is a very equipment intensive sport & couple in the cost of a round & your talking big bucks out of your wallet to just play this game. Golf like chess requires many years of devote practice to get somewhat decent! So what is the difference here......positive presentation in a controlled enviorment. I'M with RotGut on this one Chess is missing the boat because the powers that be do not understand the art of presentation. Chess can be sold to the masses if done right...it just seems that some folks lack even the common sense on how to go about this in the right fasion......

poker has a lot more advantages over chess than just promotion.

you can learn how to play poker in under 5 minutes, and you can be a decent player in under a month. compare that to chess where you need to work hard for at least a year to even understand what a strong player is doing, let alone actually be able to give one any sort of a game.

poker is more social. if you have 7 people at your house, you can play a 7 handed game, and everyone plays and talks together. in chess, people just go into their separate corners and play their separate games, occasionally glancing over. not that chess can't be a social experience, it usually is for me, but there's really no comparison.

in poker you get laid pretty good odds on your money, whether you're playing in a casino or online, the rake is relatively low. chess, on the other hand, is very expensive if you aren't a world class player. i remember playing in a big class tournament in KC a few years ago. i won my class, but after paying for duel memberships, i didnt even double up on the cost, and i won! that's not even counting the cost of a clock and up to date material neccessary to play. also, all the good online action is pay to play with no financial reward (usually). there's enough poker information available for free that you really don't have to pay. you also don't need a training engine to compete in poker in the same way you need a chess engine to be compeditive in chess. i'm a good, not great, poker player, and i'm +money by a long shot, with all expenses taken into account. i'm a much more skilled chess player than i am a poker player, and i'm probably down a couple grand to chess over the span of my lifetime, and so are just about all of the other players that post here and are even stronger than me.

chess was my first love as far as gamin goes, and it will always be the best game to me, but there really is no comparison with poker when it comes to mass appeal. i don't care how good chess promotion gets (not that its anywhere close to good now), it will never hold a candle to poker, period.

It's money.  Ever play poker without money?  Not the same thing as the real deal, right?  14-year old goes to the World Open and racks up $10,000.  Kids at school go "What the f...!  The bomb!  I can do that!"  Or, the 14-year old could win a goofy looking trophy at the state scholastics.  Kids at school go "Yeah, nice piece of crap you dork!"  Money gets their attention.  Lots of it.  Same with the older crowd

Promoting the game.....

It never ceases to amaze me the huge Texas Hold 'EM popularity explosion that has engulfed the entire nation. It is on the television all hours, on the radio and the flops are flying in every club, bar, and every other place men gather. I play and enjoy the game but I don't understand why chess can not reap the same benifits. Many of the guys I play Hold Em with know the rules and like the game. SO why can't the powers that be tap into this? What is the hang up?

I belive that the game has been grossly mispromoted by the different chess bodies of the world. Firstly this high brow intellectual attitude has got to be dropped. That snobbery just puts people off anything....besides chess to me is more a sport then anything else. I could careless about the aesthetics of the game.

Secondly, this overpromotion of schoolastic chess. I don't care what folks might think of this but face facts...95% of grown folks don't enjoy playing children.  That is just a fact and it is something I have heard from many folks outside the world of chess. It is because of this overpromotion of schoolastic chess that the game holds equal ground with other games such as Mouse Trap, Monopoly, Pay day, etc. in the eyes of many folks outside of the game. The game needs to be promoted a great deal more for adults. It is time for the game of Kings to grow up..........

Thirdly,  this overkill on how the interent has become the new frontier for chess. Well in some ways it has. As far as information such as the kind provided on this site and others has done wonders for the patzer masses. Though I have to laugh when I read Nigel SHort's quote on the internet and chess 'It is a fertile ground for cheating.' This is so true & it seems folks don't want to acknowledge the cheating epidemic that is internet chess.

A mindless rant.......maybe but the key to making over the board chess popular on a scale like Texas Hold 'EM  is to promote it to adults in a mature fasion.
