1. Dutch (although I have high thoughts of the KID as well)
2. Leningrad
3. The english edition of the Kindermann book.

Also, I think you should play 1.Nf3 f5 2.d3 Nc6. (Kindermann suggests 1...d6 against 1.Nf3.)

Don't check me with no lightweight stuff.

1. Dutch
2. Combine Classical/I-Z, Dutch-NimzoIndian, and Stonewall Smiley
3. McDonald's Starting Out, Aagaard's Stonewall, William's Classical Dutch. Schipkov's new CD should be useful too for miscellaneous dutch lines.

Thanks for the advice!

I will try to check out some of the things you are saying and come back to you. Actually, the reason I had mentioned Leningrad was because a friend of mine has offered to explain it to me (but he is himself just starting to read about this opening) and because of the apparent similarity with the KID.

Against e4 I play the Sicilian Najdorf (with e5 whenever I get the chance). There are times (Najdorf f4 & in some anti-sicilian systems) that I do fianchetto my Bf8. I have also got the book on Accelerated dragons we were talking about (Silman's) and aim to use this as an alternative (probably next year; for the time being I read it from the White side-Maroczy).

Note also if it is any help: as White I play e4 (or 1. f3!?! to have some fun) and favourites include: Maroczy set-ups and Spanish Exchange. I like to play for the full point as White or Black (unless of course I am losing)..

1. Dutch, much less theory.
2. IZ, just 10% of the theory of the KID; Leningrad is about 50%.
3. Williams Play the Classical Dutch; McDonald's book on the Dutch. If you can lay your hands on them, the golden oldies by Schwarz and Bellin.

If you want some explanation on the IZ, then you are welcome. To get a first idea, you might browse through the games by Iljin-Zjenevsky himself, Bellin and GM Naumkin.

PS What do you play against 1.e4 ?

The book had the effect good books usually have: it made the stupids more stupid, the intelligent more intelligent and the other thousands of readers remained unchanged.

Please advice on the Dutch

Hi all!

There's been a long time since me last visiting the forum.. Embarrassed and I understand that some of my questions may have been answered in some other threads in the forum, please excuse the fact that I have lost track of the available info..

My questions go to practicioners of the Dutch (some of you that come to my mind: MNb, HgMan, Dutch-Kalashnikov, ...):

I've been playing KID all my life and detested the exchange variation and sometimes the fianchetto variation. I now have (extremely) limited time to study and since I have also always loved K-side attacks, a friend of mine suggested to try the Dutch Leningrad.

1. KID or Dutch? (just your gut feeling, no need to back up your opinion)
2. If Dutch, what system ? (e.g. Leningrad)
3. In view of the above, what book? (I have no experience with the opening / I'm about 1900 ELO / try first to UNDERSTAND my openings / able to learn a few variations)

If another opening / idea comes to your mind please share it with me,

Thanks in advance,

Christos
