How did the Texan election go?

I suppose Kinky didn't win - but his campaign must've been entertaining!

Well, Kinky is at least good at attracting attention, today he's even featured in DN up here in the north!

Texans could surely do worse than Kinky, and for the rest of the world it could be fun with a comedian, writer and singer as governor in the US.  - Why should only actors win elections 'over there'?  Smiley

Well, if recent history tells us anything, the qualifications for governor of Texas (or public office in the US in general) aren't exactly stiff...

I think one difference between Kinky and "The Body" is that the latter had some prior experience in government.

A comment by the Economist may be interesting ...

The trouble with Mr Friedman is that he appears never to have applied himself to anything complex and dull. That is fine if you are an entertainer, but not if you want to sort out a creaking school system, clogged highways or a precarious budget. Those who know him say Mr Friedman has the attention span of a hyperactive schoolboy.

I agree entirely that Kinky's chances are virtually nil, but just to play devil's advocate, they said the same thing about Jesse "the Body" Ventura in Minnesota...

Kinky hasn't a shot in hell of becoming governor, and has proven himself to be a bit of an ass.  He appeared very unprepared in last week's debate, resorting to platitudes and romantic imagery (drawing an analogy of Col. Travis's line in the sand at the Alamo to the current issue of illegal immigration) rather than a plan of action.  Several impolitic remarks have come back to bite him in the butt.  The leading Democratic candidate has asked him to drop out of the race because he's doing more to help the incumbent Rick Perry than further an opposition cause.

I'm all for independent thinking, and I'd love to have an articulate, well-read, literate governor for a change, but Kinky is probably a better crime writer than a politician.

Thought I would revive this thread to mention that Kinky Friedman got a two-page spread in the Globe and Mail this weekend.  (The Globe and Mail is a Toronto newspaper that moonlights as Canada's national newspaper).  Apparently, Kinky is on the ballot and trying to become Texas' first Jewish cowboy governor.  According to the Globe, he's running fourth, but is drawing support from people from all over the political spectrum and gaining popularity as an independent...

The performance I have is from New Orleans, May 3, 1976.  Three tracks of his on a twin CD.

I don't know of any Kinky Friedman DVDs, but I'll look around...

Thanks to dsanchez for the info, considering the strange rules for voting I wouldn't expect Kinky to win either - I think he mentions in one of his crime novels that he once ran for sheriff too, but lost to a woman...

HGman, interesting to hear that KF got caught on tape during the Rolling Thunder Revue - from Ratso's book I gathered that he wasn't involved with it for more than a day or two. By the way, is there any dvd available featuring Kinky on his own?

Actually, when I read your first e-mail in this thread, I was listening to a bootlegged recording of one of Bob Dylan's Rolling Thunder Revue concerts, and Kinky Friedman was on it.  The liner notes call the song "Lasso from El Paso," though he's quite clearly saying something else...

Humor aside, though, Kinky recorded some very good work...

They just held primaries earlier this week.   I don't understand the process, but Friedman could not run in this election, but instead must garner something like 46,000 signatures to be put on the ballot in November as an independent.

There is some buzz about his candidacy, but I don't think anyone is giving him much of a chance.

Well, 'lasso' may not be quite the word - is it the censor chip again? Or one of those mishearings - like the famous Hendrix: 'Excuse me, while I kiss this guy'?  Grin

http://www.lyricsfreak.com/k/kinky-friedman/79467.html

Unfortunately, I think Kinky's sense of humour didn't really promote his career,  Cry he's actually written quite a few really good songs as well, his album Sold American is an excellent country album for example.

Still, who can resist titles like e.g: They Ain't Makin Jews Like Jesus Anymore or Get Your Biscuits in The Oven & Your Buns in The Bed  Smiley

Wow!  The Kinky Friedman who was proud to be a "Lasso from El Paso"? (which didn't sound quite like "lasso" in the song?  It's almost worth moving to Texas and becoming eligible to vote!

Just wondering if there's any Texans here that could report how the Governor election in Texas is going?

A while back I saw Leno/Lettermann with my old country / crime writer hero Kinky Friedman announcing that he was running for governor in TX - so by now I'm kind of wondering how it's going or gone?
