What about Coulsdon? The sandwiches are great and parking if free at weekends?

Also, Reykjavik  must be there somewhere?

This must be Gent, Belgium. 2 major clubs: KGSRL and Jean Jaures and lots of smaller chessclubs. Every summer, during De Gentse Feesten, 1 of the most famous open tournaments there takes place: you have to survive one to know what I'm talking about.

How about Berlin. There is no other city in the world, which as as many chess clubs as Berlin. Not sure about the exact number, but it certainly is above 30-40 range. The are chess cafes, bookstores, and tons of tournaments.

When I still played there, over 15 years ago, they had an annual city team championship, 8 boards per team, up to 6 leagues deep, multiple divisions per league. Back than they had over 5,000 players play per round.

I believe that currently Berlin has three teams in the 1st Bundesliga and 6 or 7 in the 2nd Bundesliga. Not to mention all the GMs and IMs living there. Kramnik and Shirov used to play there. Today, the most popular is probably Aronian.

I have been to the Amsterdam shop (I played in last year's Amsterdam Chess Tournament - check out the city's Gambit cafe if you get a chance before its apparently imminent closure) and it is a good one, but I suppose population catchment areas make a straight comparison unfair.

In this respect London beats Amsterdam, I am afraid. There used to be a couple of good chess book shops, but now there is only one. If it not has moved, it is a long walk or a long ride by tramcar from the centre. I suppose all Dutch order their chess books on Internet these days.

Back to London: I forgot to mention it also has what may well be the best two chess bookshops in the world, Chees & Bridge in Euston Road and BCM in Baker Street. They put even Foyles ("the biggest book shop in the world") to shame when it comes to chess.

True. But having grandmasters doesn't necessarily mean you get to play them. I was thinking more about availability of good players for blitz games and such in certain places..so that if somebody wants to play he could just go to those places and be gauranteed a game.

I admit: Amsterdam can't match this, though it could call some GM's its inhabitants in the past (Timman, Rogers).

I think Madras or Chennai in India eminently qualifies and can be bettered by only places in erstwhile USSR. Fifteen kilometer radius from my house has 3 GMs 20 IMs 3 WGMs and 7 or 8 FM's. We have about 200 players rated 2000 or more. A typical age cateogry weekend rapid tournament attracts 600 entries. Latest FIDE list has two players in the top 50 in men and one in women section. We have 3 world champions (includes ex) in various age categories. There are at leat 50 kids below fourteen with rating in the band width of 1900-2300.

All these were possible only because of the success of the best player the city has produced. His name is Viswanathan Anand! Cheesy

Amsterdam. From this city, which I don't like very much btw, one can reach all important continental  tournaments without much effort. There are also quite a lot of chess clubs. For chess London is too peripherical.  Wink

I'm not so much interested in the number of clubs as in the number of tournaments, or rather easy access to tournaments. From that viewpoint I would nominate my own home city of London. It doesn't have many/any major tournaments now that the Lloyds Bank tournament is no more but it has good train connections to the rest of the country and it has five airports (Heathrow, Gatwick, Luton, Stansted and City), giving good and cheap access to continental tournaments.

Let's see... Moscow, St. Petersburg, anywhere in Russia.

Smiley

Hell, maybe even a place like Kiev.

Hi guys,

I was just wondering what you're take is on which cities are good for chessplayers..in terms of major clubs as well as number of players etc. Montreal, Canada is good, Toronto has a great club (the BGC), In the US I think New York has a strong base. These are the places I've been too.
Its also good to take into account things like cost of living..as I assume for most chess players that is a concern ..Smiley
