Yes, I noticed that there were 4 times as many posts on 1 e4 e5 as on the Nimzo & Benoni section ... and I had a few spare hours to move all the posts!!

On another note, I'm thinking of getting a ChessPublishing subscription at the end of the year.

Now that is what I call a good idea! Wink

Put another way, only 6 people on the entire site think it's a good idea at any time.  The rest are either indifferent or opposed. (So indifferent that they didn't even bother to vote!)

Right now the poll is very close, with 6 people voting for the split, 6 voting against the split and 3 remaining indifferent.

Thank you very much. I appreciate it a lot.

Personally I don't see the Forum having "both" as any problem. I don't think that one opening get priority over another. If I would like to start a thread discussing any line of Ruy Lopez I just do it and the same for any other opening and any other Forum member. If I am not interseting in e.g Two Knights I just skip reading the thread.

It is when the resources are sparse the priority is necessary. The expert writing the e4 e5 section or thr Open Sicilian section has only limited time and must select. Then the splitting could be something to be discussed - which means more time and consequently bigger cost. Something for the member to wish (or not) and the owner to estimate and decide based on (long term, I hope) financial and opening criterias.

What kind of proof is that?

OK, I've removed it.
Incidentally, it is easy enough to divide the 1 e4 e5 sections into 2 on the Forum, providing ... one of the moderators is again happy to reassign all the previous posts! Undecided

I don't mind if Najdorf get a section of its own but I rather would like Ruy Lopez to get its own section.

That is the reason why I am not voting.

By the way I refuse to pay any extra money for Najdorf so if that is a requisite to remain Gold member I will re-consider my membership. On the other side I would actually pay extra for a Ruy Lopez section.

I think a poll should consider the financial aspect as well. What is it worth if I vote for "Yes please, Najdorf" then I cut down on my subscription when I realize that the fee becomes higher.

...or, are there information/promises that the Najdorf will be free for already goldmembers, now and in the future? In that case, please tell and I won't mind voting for Najdorf.

Yes the Ruy Lopez and the Grunfeld definitely deserve their own sections long before another sicillian runoff section should ever come into play.

If it came up that it costs more... I would definitely pay for the Ruy Lopez, might pay more for the Grunfeld... would never pay more for an extra sicillian run off.

Must admitt that it is not important at all to me.

The Ruy Lopez on the other hand would be much appreciated if had a section of its own.

Come on Tony - why should Ruy be a part of a huge "opening space". Each one deserves its own right and both historical and for the future Ruy Lopez is and will be import!

The Najdorf doesn't have its own section because the whole Taimanov/Classical/Scheveningen/Najdorf complex is transpositional, while for the most part the Dragon is not transpositional.

That's a very good point!
I think that the way theory is growing, and the number of important games increasing, there will never be enough coverage.
Splitting the sections further would cause enormous technical problems, would need lots of extra writers, and would obviously be very expensive.
Therefore to seriously consider this we would also have to seriously look at increasing the subscription.
On the other hand, adding extra Forum sections would be simple enough, providing one of the Moderators was happy to trawl through all the threads and move them to their new home. Undecided

That is an excellent idea.  I think GM Victor Mikhalevski is doing an excellent job but it is in its nature that Spanish is such an important opening that the other opening will be in the background when piled all together.

I even should wish that Ruy and Petroff had there own section and then a new one with all other 1.e4 e5 openings.

Transpositions will always be a problem, even under the existing sections.

Imo the "Open Sicilian" (and the "1.e4 e5") section are too big for monthly updates. Minor openings have a difficult time to get attention of the writers.

I wouldn´t mind two additional sections, e.g. "Open Sicilians - Najdorf, Scheveningen, Taimanov" and "Open Sicilians - all the rest" on the one hand and "1.e4 e5 "Ruy Lopez and Russian" and "1.e4 e5 - all the rest", just to get more focus on the KG, Philidor and other openings, which get a more attention in the forum than in the sections - which indicates that there is a market for these openings.

If you try, you may lose. If you don´t try, you have lost.

The Najdorf doesn't have its own section because the whole Taimanov/Classical/Scheveningen/Najdorf complex is transpositional, while for the most part the Dragon is not transpositional.  Trying to discuss the Najdorf without tripping on the Scheveningen or the Boleslavsky is difficult enough anytime, but currently the fashionable response to all these openings is the same: Be3,f3, Qd2, 0-0-0.  And despite appearances, you don't transpose ot the Yugoslav Attack despite the similar plan.

Well, is it also possible to get a seperate forum for just the English attack  Tongue !?? I don't like the typical plans of white (f3, g4 h4 etc, simple and very effective), when I'm playing black. Need more info about that stuff ( I have bought Kasparov's DVD3 about the Najdorf now)....Maybe the hyper-acc dragon is a better try then  Cry.

Therefore a Najdorf forum is necessary !!!

Yes, good idea to have Najdorf as seprate forum. Judge popularity from that and consider whether worthwhile to have separate section. Would have thought so myself but that's impressionistic rather than empirical. Guess someone who has chessbase (I dont) can find numbers of games, also check numbers of posts relative to Other Sicilians, and amount of action within each thread.

Note that dragon has died down recently by the way on the forum. Not necessarily sympathy regarding Chris' occasional tardiness, but guess it must be tough for him finding enough relevant games each month in only one line?

Agree that Grunfeld placed in Daring Defences looks peculiar. Is as solid as they come.

Well the Najdorf is kind of a chameleon (esp if followed up with e6), so a seperate section may not be such a good idea.

If nothing else works, a total pig-headed unwillingness to look facts in the face will see us through.

It might be worth doing a full review to perhaps iron out a few anomalies, eg Dragon having its own section, but Grunfeld lumped under 'Daring Defences'...

(although I can understand why Dragon devotees need a constant flood of new ideas in order to avoid being crushed in 20 moves or so...)

At any rate, if religious devotion was a criterion, then we dould need a separate section for BDG as well  Grin

I think that the Dragons inspire more religious devotion than the Najdorf, so it's ok to have that section on it's own!

I think with the way the site is run, there are not that many games in the Najdorf each month that are "critical" in the sense that everybody who plays it or allows it needs to know about them.  When there is a big supertournament it does tend to be different, but that doesn't cover every month!

It wasn't too long ago that the Sveshnikov/Anti-Sveshnikov was the most popular sicilian by far!

It inspires this devotion because it is not that popular anymore and also under a seemingly endless theoretical cloud. It's a kind of underdog situation. I would say that a large number of Najdorf players may feel the same way, but they are more reserved about it. This doesn't mean that they wouldn't benefit and enjoy to have a separate section for the Najdorf. (just a place to discuss it in depth between other members)

Also, are you serious about the Sveshnikov? I don't think I ever recall the Sveshnikov overtaking the Najdorf in popularity. Also, since you suggest it isn't the most popular Sicilian now, what happened?

These things were decided way back at the very beginning of ChessPublishing, and not by me I might add!
I would certainly do things completely differently if I had my way, but now everything is set in stone.
I did once dare ask Chris Ward if he wouldn't mind taking on some other Sicilians as well, but he wasn't very keen! Sad

I think it's silly that the Najdorf doesn't ALREADY have its own section. It is by far the most popular Sicilian at the master level as well as among the most respected and it is incredibly complex. I'm shocked that the Dragon has its own section and not the Najdorf.  Shocked  Undecided

I was just joking! Shocked It would be nice to see some other Sicilians in the super-GM tournaments, but it might just be a case of having to wait for a month without really strong tournaments ... !  Smiley
Regarding the Caro, I am no expert but the eBook already looks complicated enough to me! Maybe you can email Andy directly to ask him to cover something in particular?

as a gold card subscriber, i hope so.. Grin A new section for the Najdorf means significantly more room for other sicilians.. will be nice to see more Taimanovs, Sveshnikovs, Kalashnikovs and Rauzers (Tony authored a CD and is the real expert!)

But if any opening deserves a new section, its the Caro-Kann. It has accumulated alot of complicated theory which Martin doesn't seem so interested in...  Embarrassed

Is there any truth in the comment that ‘we might soon have to open a new section on Chesspublishing.com just for the Najdorf!!?’  Wink
