After the tournament Marco van Basten must invite Timman and Stellwagen for a lecture. Subject: how to crush Swedish sportsmen.
Score: SVE - NED ½ - 3½
This has great predicting value for the forthcoming WCh.  Cheesy

Two Barcza Systems and two wins for White! Maybe I should go back to my old repetoire Roll Eyes

Those who want to go by my perverse footsteps play such pawn structure with fuzzy atypical still strategic orientations

Timman must give the others some chance Grin
Two dutchies in the lead with Atalik in third. Seems the Swedes are not doing that well.

PS I looked at Stellwagen's last two games, he seems to use the Paulsen/Kan complex to good effect, incidentally his 3rd game follows the Delchev book for quite a while.

Yeah, both russkies lost, hehe. And Timman plays like he was 30 years younger! Already a full point ahead of everyone else. Impressive. Today it's another top encounter Timman-Atalik, 1-0 here and the tm may be decided already.

**Nope, a 14 move draw, maybe Lilla Torg was beckoning for them...  Roll Eyes

A quick draw indeed. Wink
Nice pawn sac, not sure if white could have held the draw though.
Anyway Timman rules Cool

Whether beating one of the many swedes or not, the two dutchmen are at least trying to fulfill the spectators' expectations. While the turk and especially the two russkies haven't shown much.

Tomorrow's Khenkin - Timman, a quick draw again perhaps?  Angry

Well, back then they stole Delaware from us too, so nothin is new these days. And yesterday they even beat J-O et Co at table tennis. - Our only consolation is that they must live like Gollums in the swampy marshes by the Atlantic.  Grin

"sen is a marker for danish/norwegian"

This is severely incomplete. I dare to bet, that there live more people in The Netherlands called ***-sen (Jansen, Janssen, Pietersen, Petersen, Klaassen, Goossen, Flipsen etc etc) than in Danmark and Norway together.

And during your superpower years in the 1600s you had a major wave of work-seeking immigrants from Norway... At this time Sweden was also a superpower, so we had no reason to seek work in the rain...  Smiley

I have voted Stellwagen, mainly because he is sympathetic chap and deserves at least one vote.  Cheesy
The Scandinavians are lucky, that he is not named Karelsen.

I voted for Stellwagen as well, because

(a)  I think he has a pretty good chance to win;

(b)  he plays the King's Indian;

(c)  he did seem a likeable kid/chap when interviewed at Corus, though he pretty clearly felt bad having just lost to Naiditsch.

Also I recall reading on one of the Dutch sites about something that happened in connexion with the Dutch championship last year(?).  It was something like this:  Stellwagen had been invited, but was so busy at school that the invitation letter escaped his notice.  The deadline for accepting passed (there was no e.g. follow-up phone call), and the next person in line was invited.  When Stellwagen's oversight came to light, he was offered another chance to accept the invitation.  He declined, because he considered it unfair to the person who had already been invited in his stead.  (I think Stellwagen ended up playing anyway, due to a later [pre-tournament] dropout.)

Hopefully the live games will work again tomorrow.

Those who were there had one really interesting game to follow, Berg gave up a piece for an inconvenient bishop keeping white's king in the middle. Timman went for a perpetual, but amazingly Berg found a way to avoid a draw - most lower rated GMs would probably have been happy with a draw with black against Timman, especially in the 1st round...

Unfortunately, bravery was not not to be rewarded this day and with 32.Qxb5! (spurning the 'obvious' Qg5+ Kf7 Qxb5 as the game choice allowed white to trade queens) the game turned into a better ending for white, which probably was saveable for black but not in practice against an endgame artist like Timman...
