Seems Timman pulled a "topalov": racing to 5 wins and draw the rest. Quick draw in the last game making him unreachable for the rest.

If nothing else works, a total pig-headed unwillingness to look facts in the face will see us through.

Tough draw between the 2 dutchies, only bare kings were left.

Well, my club mate is still going strong leading by a whole point!  Smiley

In the analysis room we thought he'd be toast after 53.Kb5 d2 54.Kb6 as he doesn't collect the c-pawn - but I think we found a draw in the end, but I don't remember how.

I think I am on the right track now. In stead of taking the c pawn black should just give check or go to a1 if not possible. If white doesnt protect the a pawn with the king black can just take it.
Eg 54.Kb6 Rb1+ 55.Kc6 Ra1 56.c5 Rxa7
Going to the 8th row with the king also doesnt seem to help.

So my original hunch was incorrect Undecided

Ouch, the worst I had was when a friend (and opponent) started a Gollum imitation after I played a weird move. "It hurtss our eyess yes it hurtss us"
That was blitz though and I do worse things myself.

I didnt know that, would be great to have someone like him sitting a few boards away.

Well, as long he's sittin'...

- I played the IM subtournament some years ago - only held because there were only four players in GM group that year. In one game I blundered the h-pawn as black in an English opening (though it might have looked like I gave it up for an attack down the h-file...) which is embarrassing enough, but having Timman and Judit Polgar strolling by and looking confusedly at the mess is even more so...  Embarrassed

Timman (& his buddy Ivan too) is registered for Limhamns SK, though we haven't been able to afford his services in the series for a couple of years. But maybe it's time when the new season starts in the Fall - it's highly boring that only clubs in Stockholm has won the highest series for the last +20 years...

I didnt know that, would be great to have someone like him sitting a few boards away.

Not 100% sure since I have no board, but isnt it a theoretical draw after 54 .. Kxc4 55 Rxd2 Rb1+ 56 Kc7 Ra1?

When we looked at those, white seemed to win all the time, Rd7-b7 being a key idea.

There's some lines with pawn a7 and c6/c7 against a rook being amazingly drawn some times. iIrc the draw was something with a queen ending arising, but it's a blur atm...

I was looking at that too
57 Kb8 Rb1+ 58 Kc8 Ra1 59 Rd7 and now I have to think of something really smart to avoid Kb8 and Rb7, so I'll try to find something with the board later on.

Timman is relaxing with a quick draw, so he can beat up the last Swede in the last round

Nice to see! Great players are always dangerous, even when people have written them off!

After the tournament Marco van Basten must invite Timman and Stellwagen for a lecture. Subject: how to crush Swedish sportsmen.
Score: SVE - NED ½ - 3½
This has great predicting value for the forthcoming WCh.  Cheesy

Well, at least we have 2-1 against the russkies. And that's what matters!
