Well, -sen is a marker for danish/norwegian names and -son for swedish/icelandic. Iirc, after the Nordic union was broken up in the 1300s sweden went back to the scandic roots in its language just to be different from the others - the same phenomenon can be seen in former yugoslavia for example, newish nationality - newish language.

Strange that this sen/son should be so difficult for foreigners, the suffixs O' & Mc/Mac fill the same function but those are seldom mistaken for each other - maybe it's exhaustion after reading more than two vowels for the english speaking or short attention span that don't last until the end of words?!  Grin

Anyway, enough about that - here's the draw for the first round:

28/4 Rond 1

Jan Timman - Emanuel Berg
Tiger Hillarp-Persson - Pontus Carlsson
Igor Khenkin - Alexei Federov
Suat Atalik - Daniel Stellwagen
Slavko Cicak - Jonny Hector

It was ignorance in my case. Never heard of Pontus Carlsson. Everytime it was Magnus Carlsen making news & i never really took notice of the spelling. Anyway...Carlsson looks more a Swedish name than Carlsen! So.....

Isnt he Norwegian (the kid)?

Anyway never bothered with the spelling either

Well, one of his games was recently discussed here in the Dragon section under a different misspelling...

I have voted Stellwagen, mainly because he is sympathetic chap and deserves at least one vote.  Cheesy
The Scandinavians are lucky, that he is not named Karelsen.

I am afraid that I assumed it was Magnus Carlsen too - and that it was you who had misspelt it Embarrassed

I apologise for doubting you!

In this case, I would change my choice to Suat Atalik.

Just visted the site. Boy! did i really have a serious mix-up! All this while I was thinking of that wonder boy Magnus!! Embarrassed

In that case, I shall go for Fedorov. Hope to see some KG's from him too.

Hmm, Carlsson still leads the poll - are there really three other people here who can't differ between Carlsson and Carlsen? Or is it the underdog syndrome?

Personally, I'd like to see one of the swedes win as it was quite a while since last time. So Hillarp was my choice, though Berg may be the most realistic swedish winner, as he's the youngest of the GMs and thus probably has the most potential. And when in form he can beat anyone.

(Btw, Hellers is the only swede who's won it alone (more than once! A real pity he's quit playin  Cry ) and I think Ulf Andersson has shared 1st one time too)

I suppose people here like an underdog, as the only non-GM is apparantly favourite to win, at the  moment! Actually, taking a GM norm may be hard enough, as it's only been done once in the history of this tournament...

I hope Khenkin wins... he is very strong, pity his rating doesn't always correpond with his true ability.

I am going for the Dutch veteran. I expect some nice opening trickery.

PS do they have a site where the games can be followed?

Well, that would be nice, but I think he's gone NimzoIndian on us...  Sad

I'd also guess on czech/slovakian heritage concerning Cicak. But he's probably born in Sweden - at least his english sounded a little swedish in Cork... Everybody seems to pronunce his name as it's spelled, but maybe it should be - tsitsak - as c = ts in slavic languages,?

For info on Cicak, see the tournament pages... But I have to admit, I am still not sure of his origin after reading the info.... Czech Rep?

Btw, I expect (IM Pontus) Carlsson to have a hard time in this field...

Oh....What kind of name is Cicak? Where is he from? In the malay language that word means lizard! (pronounced chee-chak....the 'a' as in shark)  Grin
