Easy Guide to the Sveshnikov Sicilian by Aagard is a good book ( http://www.chesscafe.com/text/hansen20.pdf ) and a must buy and of course Rogozenko excellent book is another must buy. Quote:

I am not 100% sure to agree with this too. Of course the Sicilian is not an opening for someone o starts playing, and it is more suitable to more experienced players, but I do agree that sometimes books can be better too! Of course a book that explains ideas, structures and plans maybe needs 500 pág, and I think that, if that was the norm, there will be less players saying that certain openings are over their head. Overall, I think that with the quality of the present books on the Sveshnikov, this opening only needs an effort to verbalize the ideas behind the moves or plans in variations, a kind of "King´s Indian Battle Plans" book but a better one!. I will look forward to seeing Starting Out the Sveshnikov.

Going further, from what I've heard about Rogozenko's book (I've sadly not yet received my copy) - As Alias said, it's not an *easy* book. However, he has done an admirable job according to a friend (and religious Sveshnikov player) in explaining both the ideas and presenting the most up-to-date source of theory with new ideas and improvements. To use my friend's words, "Anyone who plays the Sveshnikov, or wants to, should get the book. Anyone who feels the book is over their head is probably not at a standard where they should be playing the opening."

I'm not 100% sure I agree with him, but certainly I wouldn't recommend the Sicilian (any variation) to lower-graded players, and anyone who plays at the sub-1500 level would do better to look elsewhere than the Sveshnikov, since from my experience the likelihood of even reaching the position after 4.Nxd4, let alone 13.h4 Bh6 in one of the most topical subvariations, is quite low at this level (indeed, the best chance is probably against someone who plays the Scotch, since I seem to remember most people, when I started out, played the same against 1.e4 c5 as they did against 1.e4 e5 (hence, a high percentage of 1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bc4?! games)).

Nonetheless, Rogozenko's book is a fine effort, and anyone who wishes to play the Sveshnikov should own it.

Edit: Congratulations, John. I look forward to seeing another fine effort.

Funny you should ask. I've just signed a contract this morning to do this.

That book looks just like other Sveshnikov books (in terms of structure). Not much of an 'easy guide'. It's not very good either.

There are many books on the Sveshnikov available. One stands out in terms of quality: Rogozenko's. It's not an easy book, but then again, it's not an easy opening.

Don't check me with no lightweight stuff.

Don't laugh. Smiley It's been done with the Najdorf! So, is anyone writing this intro to
the Sveshnikov?

Thanks for any response.
