I'm also not sure I see the trickle-down.  Surely investors will be more interest in "World Champion" matches than the average tournament...

However this needs to be backed up by just, equitable and democratic candidate cycle for the next regular world championship. It is here, the present administration failed miserably.

Very true. But why do we still need the candidates cycle if there is now a direct access to the champ??  What this means to me at least is that this rule is like revisiting the way things were done before 1948. Any top player is eligible to challenge the champ. The $$ part of the rule ensures that the champ is obligated to play the challenger unlike in the past, the champ can simply duck challenges from his most feared opponents.

I’m not averse to 2700+$$ matches. The Champion puts his title on chopping board for a nice pay day. There’s nothing wrong about it. In fact, if the top tier is rich and second tier well off, a normal GM can hope to pay his bills. It’s a top down approach since publicity and popularity are involved, to allow the gravy to trickle down.

However this needs to be backed up by just, equitable and democratic candidate cycle for the next regular world championship. It is here, the present administration failed miserably. They don’t seem to have sponsors for 2006 candidate matches!

What happens to the world cup or the 8 player World championships? Based on the rule (rating>2700 + $$) there isnt any need to have them or have interzonal & candidates cycles anymore as anyone who satisfies the rule becomes a worthy challenger. What if say 2 or more people satisfy the rule? Then, who gets to play 1st?

1) How come it was so diffict to find sponsors for matches before and so apparently easy now? Was Kasparov too good?

2) Will Topalov (or other world champions) stop playing tournament chess and just play matches?

What happens if Kramnik beats Topalov?  Will the negotiations fall apart?

Apparently, current FIDE rules state that any chess player with rating more than 2700 and able to put up $1 million can challenge the FIDE world champion.
