1. Topalov's complaint was a perversion of justice indeed. It hardly has any substance; it uses a lot of words to state, that Kramnik used the bathroom remarkable often. There was no single reason to play hardball.

At best, this argues that the appeals committee decided wrongly.  Anyone has the right to such an opinion.  Clearly however, Topalov had the right under the match terms to raise the issue that he raised.  What anyone thinks of the objective merit of his complaint, his supposed reasons for making it, and what the appeals committee >should have< done about it, should be a matter for journalistic commentary and post-match speculation, NOT a pretext for breaking up the match, or even threatening to.

I am amazed that the absolute necessity of governance by rule, which obligates players to respect the decisions of arbiters in every sport, is so widely disregarded on this thread.  What we have instead -- I do not accuse you of it -- is a remarkable prevalance of rhetorically puerile foot-stomping and wall-slamming over a ruling that, in substance, is remarkably inoffensive and affects both players equally.

I am also amazed that Kramnik's strange bathroom behavior, which certainly might cause a reasonable person to suspect that he was cheating, is not seen as a >possibly< valid basis for a complaint by Topalovs team.  As I remarked earlier, if I saw a player at a weekend tournament visiting the bathroom ten times or so during each of his games, I would certainly inform the director of it.

I mainly agree with this, except one point. I never denied Topalov's right to present an official complaint. He also has the right to complain about the length of Kramnik's nose. My point is, that Topalov's official complaint was an intentional action to stir up trouble - and he has succeeded. In my opinion such an action is a perversion of justice indeed.
For instance, he could have formulated a request, to find out the reason for Kramnik's all too frequent visits of the bathroom. Another option, if he really suspected fraud, was a request to search both bathrooms a few minutes before the start of the games.
Topalov's complaint reminds me of the trial as described by Joseph Wambaugh in his 1973 book The Onion Field. I blame him for doing this, but by no means think, this justifies the actions of the arbiters and Kramnik.

The book had the effect good books usually have: it made the stupids more stupid, the intelligent more intelligent and the other thousands of readers remained unchanged.

While out of town I briefly got internet access yesterday to check on the progress of the match and could hardly believe what I found out.  Another classic FIDE bungle!

That Topalov's off the board tactics (the over that board ones being clearly ineffective) should net him a game by forfeit in this match is simply outrageous.  Team Topalov's suggestions that Kramnik was somehow cheating were groundless — not to mention deliberately insulting to Kramnik.

Obviously, the match should continue with game 5 — that any "reasonable" person could claim otherwise (as appears to be the case in this forum) is beyond belief.  What are you guys smoking?

I missed this post earlier, and I wholeheartedly agree, the only question left to be pondered now is indeed the nature of the hallucinogen being smoked. Another plausible explanation could be that some posters have been abducted by Bulgarian terrorists and forced on pain of death to type pro Topalov sentiment.

This is the latest from FIDE:
After the detailed study of the current situation and the consultation with the FIDE Legal Advisor, the FIDE President decided: Tomorrow, 2 October 2006, at 15.00, the 6th Game of the World Chess Championship Match Topalov-Kramnik with the score 3:2 in favour of Kramnik, will take place.

This is crap. First Kirsan says the issue is no longer legal, but political. Then he consults his legal advisor!  Roll Eyes Lawyers have no place when sportsmanship and legitimacy of title is at issue.

Anyway, it is possible that even if Kramnik plays on, Topalov will be affected negatively psychologically by the free point.

@O.Bender:  Hashish. Reefer. La Mauvaise Herbe. Ganja.  Shocked

I think that the color allocation ought to be flipped: game 6 should be a Kramnik white instead of black, thus giving him one more white overall.  Seems like some compensation for accepting the 3-2 score.

If Kramnik is indeed black tomorrow, he should whip out the Modern Benoni a la Fischer 1972.  That would be worth some style points!  Of course, these are just the non-sensical ravings of a lunatic mind, whatever those are worth.  Wink

I suspect the match is over, and Topalov and his team's desperate last long shot has paid off in spades.

Before this match began I was rooting for Topalov to win, but now I am utterly disgusted. It would have been much better to lose the match with dignity than to stoop to this level to keep the title.

To be honest I thought that Topalov team's semi absurd complaint was a ploy simply aimed at delaying the match to allow for some more prep time for he and his team. However the handling of the complaint by the appeals committee was so ridculous, that obviously under the circumstances it was clear that Kramnik could not continue. I would have done the same, had someone accused me of cheating (which is what Topalov's team is really siggesting), and then had it more or less upheld by an appeals committee.

This junk about the judges ruling being final is nonsense when it is clear that the ruling itself is not only unjustfied but unlawful, and to add itself to injury to forfeit one of the contestants before there had been a proper resolution is incredible.

I particularly loved how Topalov showed up for game five no doubt eager to pocket the predicted forfeit, and there is no chance in hell that he is gunna give that up, and why should he. Pschologically it is difficult to play a game you have already been awarded, the problem is, he should never have been awarded the game in the first place, but rather at that point the match should have been postponed whereupon a resolution would have been much more likely than it is now.

As I have said before on this thread and maybe others too, Topalov absolutely had no realistic chance to get back into this match, and it seems that the reality of this predicament prompted Topalov's team to concoct a scheme designed to at the very least disrupt the match or at most abort it altogether. Now with Fide's help Topalovs's team seems to have achieved the latter.

Had Topalov not missed mate in three in game two, which incidentally blows a big hole in his 'cheating in the toilet argument' then we probably would not have the situation we have now.

I suspect had Kramnik showed up for game five, Topalov and his team would have searched for other ways to abort the match.

Luckily its Topalov's team and not Kramnik's that includes the parapsychologist, as surely they would  protested that too.

My prediction now is that Topalov retains his Fide title by forfeit.

To win a World Championship match with a two game deficit is impressive indeed, a feat that would be the envy of Houdini himself  Grin

It just hit me:

This is all staged.  Its just like WWF Wrestling.  Fake.  Scripted and everything.  I see clearly now.  I can't believe it took me so long to realize such an obvious truth.  The Scrabble championships are on TV right now.  Maybe I should switch back to that game.  It seems to still have a shred of integrity left in it.  But maybe not, it could be corrupt too.  How many points is "toilet" worth if it starts on a triple word score? Ah, I know....3-2.

Peace out.

Another reasonable opinion, from Bessel Kok:

Quote:
1-The Appeals Committee made a wrong judgment and its decision to modify the playing conditions must be declared null and void.

2-Game five was started under playing conditions that were not mutually agreed by both players (and in fact explicitly rejected by one of them), so the game should be considered null and void.

3-Game five should start tomorrow, Monday, October 2nd, and the match should continue under the same playing conditions as agreed before.

4-The Appeals Committee should be dismissed and replaced by a Committee agreed by both players.

5-In the absence of an agreed Committee, the FIDE President is responsible for the duties of the Committee.

6-Proceed as quickly as possible with the outsourcing of all top-level chess competitions to a separate company manage by professional organisers.

Get on with it! Enough damage has been done!!

Reasonable? Only for an alien no? If Topalov is a man of honour, he will never accept that a match will continue 3-2 but unfortunately I have doubts, because the mafia that surrounds him are looking now for the millions and for the next match with Radjabov that Topalov can loose if he looses this match. Kirsan acts like a saint but always in Topalov favor. The strategy of Topalov and his mafia outside the board was very good! Congratulations! He found a way to skip away from this lost match and put suspicions on Kramnik and Topalov become the victim of the situation. Just perfect! And do not forgett about who was on that mafia commite- one manager of Radjabov!
Here are some opinions from all over the world: http://www.chessbase.com/newsdetail.asp?newsid=3386 maybe this can clean the dust from the eyes of the few who still defend Topalov for dubious reasons.

This is the latest from FIDE:

After the numerous rounds of the negotiations with the teams of Veselin Topalov and Vladimir Kramnik, FIDE President Kirsan Ilyumzhinov managed to reach the considerable progress. As it was informed before, the question on the bathrooms was solved positively by mutual agreement of both teams. After the voluntary resignation of the members of the 2006 World Chess Championship Appeals Committee, the new members of the Committee, who have already arrived to Elista, were assigned. The FIDE President has made several proposals for further continuation of the match, which unfortunately were not accepted.

So, if it appears that if there IS to be a match, forfeit loss will stand.  That seems quite reasonable to me.  If you refuse to play, you forfeit.  It remains to be seen if the match will indeed resule under these conditions.

And this is, ultimately the problem: reasonable people can disagree as to whether the arbiters actually had it within their power to change the conditions in this way.  Since neither camp playing can be described as reasonable, we find ourselves at an impasse.

I agree with you that Kramnik should have played the game since any fool could have foreseen the situation we find ourselves in: the actual complaint can be resolved, but not the business of the forfeit.  Still it is not correct to say that the decision affected the players equally; clearly, Kramnik cared much more.  The fact that players care differently about various match provisions is the whole reason for the negotiations and contract...

Well, another day without chess.  I agree that tomorrow will be decisive.  I expect Kirsan to rule that the match continues 3-1 and Topalov to walk out, thus ending another sad chapter.  I wonder if Kramnik would then agree to play on from 3-2, or from 3-1 with a 14 game match (as has also been suggested).

Now I realize why there have been so many human-computer matches...

I expect tomorrow will be an important day when it comes to the fate of this Championship. Either a solution will have been found or otherwise I am afraid it all can soon be over.

Toppa's team states if  the result of Kramnik's forfeit in game #4 stands they are leaving the match. I doubt Kramnik is going to accept this so in my mind the match is over & done with.... I hope this is not the case but if this pathetic episode should result in the canclelation of the WC match then as far as I'M concerend top level chess is dead, FIDE is dead, & the game withdraws to the club ranks where it has always been healthy & strong! Considering the way FIDE & some top GM's have ruined the game with their antics this will be a welcome turn of events! The way I see this now goes beyond the who is right and wrong argument....both players are acting out of line. Let the legacy of Toppa vs Kramnik match be 'The Death of Top Level Chess' Considering what has taken place in top level chess over the last 15 years I won't miss it much.........

I find it incredibly unlikely that either player will let go of "his" favorite score: Topalov 3-2 and Kramnik 3-1.  The most probable outcome is a cancelled match, I'm afraid.  Cry

However, my romantic spirit cannot help but cry out this:

Kramnik should take a bold step and accept the result of game 5, 0-1.  Resume the match at 3-2, and with courage and strength, try to prove superiority nonetheless and win the match.  Not only will he have garnered more sympathy from the  world spectator forum, but he can draw inspiration and confidence from the 1972 Fischer-Spassky match (although the score was more heavily against Fischer after his forfeit...0-2).  Personally speaking, I would want to root for Kramnik in this situation, for their is something heroic about it.  Drawing strength from past heroes is a valuable psychological tool for motivation, and knowing the the world supports you in your efforts is likewise an added boost...

Of course this is hogwash, just the non-sensical ravings of a lunatic mind.  It would be VERY risky to give such a dynamic and dangerous player as Topalov a free point in a very TENSE and IMPORTANT match.  It could so easily BACKFIRE on him that he would have to be out of his mind to consider it!

But I would enjoy seeing it!  Smiley
