Openings !!

If I was Topalov I would try and play both 1d4 and 1 e4 . My hunch is that if he goes 1d4 he'll play either 4Nf3 Nimzo or 4g3 Queens Indian assuming Kramnik plays this. I wouldn't be shocked if Kramnik defends with the Semi-Slav !! Kramik to defend with the Marshall (more likely an anti-Marshall) and the Petroff

Kramnik to play 4qc2 Nimzo or 4 e3 Nimzo . Can't see him going 1e4.
Top to defend with......Nimzo / Manhattan and his a6 slav. If 1e4 definitely a najdorf.

Surprise openings : Scandanavian with Qd6  or the Trompovsky or KID !!

My hope is for an action packed 12 games.

John I hope your right about the QGD - it is nice to see this opening in the World Championship matches.

I would not rule out Kramnik playing 1.e4 completely (I know he had some reverses but in general he was in poor form at the time, and if he has done serious prep here I would not put it passed him to prove all the experts wrong on this one, a long shot I know - but lets hope for some surprises!)

Contrary to yourself I am hoping for a Topalov win - I dont see a connection between himself and Ilyumzhinov, who I agree is a force of darkness. I wont open that whole argument about previous conduct of Kramnik and Topalov, lets just forget everything and hope for a great chess match in this historical encounter!

If Toppy has to defend against the 1.Nf3, 2.c4 stuff then I think it will be one of these 3:

1) straightforward classical chess ...d5,...e6 and QGD as mentioned
2) Hedgehog - maybe less likely - but I can see Toppy defending the double fiancheto line quite happily despite Kramniks deep knowledge of it.
3) KID - could be very interesting! You would think that this was asking for trouble against Kramnik so it may be the least likely, but theoretically I believe KID is in better shape than it has been for many years and this kind of clash could suit Topalov also.

I would venture to predict the Petroff. I don't think we'll see the Berlin. And against d4 I would anticipate plenty of QGD.

It will be interesting to see how it goes when Kramnik is White. In the past he’s been tremendously successful in denying Topalov his sort of play. Whether Topalov will seek dynamic chances as Black and if so how – assuming Kramnik sees sense and bins e4 totally, as I very much hope – against Kramnik’s very solid Nf3/c4 stuff, is the main puzzle I’m looking forward to seeing played out. I’m not even sure what Topalov normally does against that – I’d guess he’d go for some sort of Slav/Semi-Slav. Maybe we’ll see whether Korchnoi’s prediction about the …a6 Slav comes true?! Although Topalov might decide to go for some sort of king’s fianchetto defence, like Shirov did in Caorle, which would certainly be interesting.

I very much fear Topalov is likely to win: obviously I am in no position to judge but my feeling is that Kramnik in some sense understands the game better. I think though that physical condition will be the decisive factor. Which would be a great shame, since Kramnik as far as one can see is a gentleman and a force for good in the game, whereas Topalov’s conduct hasn’t impressed me at all. We don’t need Ilyumzhinov in power and his creature as World Champion.

Funny, I'm about to go to the Isle of Man; two years ago I was playing there when Kramnik-Leko was on. Must be that time of year again.

Wow not been canceled till now. So lets hope this time It works...

Any predictions for the opening?

My predtiction is we will see mostly d4 games by both players and though fights.

However I am curious what this times Kramniks preparation against e4 would be. Against Kasparov he surprised me heavily with the Berlin, against Leko the petroff wasnt a big surprise but the frequence of novelitys was still impressive.

What will be the choice agaist Topalov?

Anyway what will be Topolovs strategy? Stay by one opening or switch.... ?

any other predictions?

There's a very famous sequence that occurred in Lugano in the match between Karpov and Korchnoi.  The scene was recreated brilliantly in the movie, Dangerous Moves, which won an Oscar for best foreign film in (?)1985(?).

A few more comments from Kirsan about the K-T match.

http://www.chessbase.com/newsdetail.asp?newsid=3306

Quote:
More than one hundred journalists have been accredited. In addition there will be experts in extrasensory perception. Ilyumzhinov: "My informers did not tell which exactly team will be using them, but they assure that such experts will be present in the audience. There is an opinion that such persons – sorcerers as I call them – can influence the opponent and to prevent him from thinking, in some way. I do not particularly believe such fairy tales, as during the elections of 2002 (in Kalmykia) my opponent was assisted by some of that kind, without any success. But each participant of the match can bring with him up to ten persons. If this includes the sorcerers, they will be accredited."

I never before realized this was so important. This MUST be the reason that I'm not yet a GM.  Severe deficiency of sorcerers. You guys think this is real? and if so, which side do you think is bringing them? Also, will the participants be allowed to wear aluminum foil hats to block the extra-sensory attacks?

It looked like some sort of deer that got stuck in the glare of an oncoming semi.

Maybe that was supposed to represent FIDE?

It was created by the Quote:
well-known Kalmyk painter S. Badendaev.

Ok, hands up all who have heard of this well-known painter before, and what's his first name?  Shocked

(I'm guessing it's a he by his last name.)

Ilyumzhinov is the Head of the Republic of Kalmykia.  The animal depicted is a species of antelope whose dwelling are the steppes of Kalmykia.

Since Kirsan couldn't put his own face on the WCh logo (or could he?), I guess he settled for a local mammal.  Grin

From the chessbase article...though maybe this doesn't really answer your question.

Ostap,

Thanks for the link to chessbase!  I have two questions:

a) who came up with the logo for the event? Huh

and

b) what the heck is it supposed to be? Shocked

Absolutely no problems.  As I said, I assume it wasn't mostly towards me and the whole thing is mostly in fun anyway.
Best.

And while it might be a bit off topic .... sorry all....  I wanted to mention "Alekhine isn't quite as monstrous as he was made out to be after WWII",   I completely agree.  The anti-semitic letters which were attributed to him were found to be forced upon him in order to protect his wife.  And as for avoiding a rematch with Capablanca...well, Lasker was a master of choosing his opponents and almost no one tries to attack him for doing so.  Frankly, it was the correct decision from a professional standpoint.  Who would want to face Capablanca, escpecially when he's actually preparred for the match?  No way.  I'd rather get Bogo any day of the week and the Champion had the priviledge of choosing his challenger in those days.

Now, back on topic....Kramnik is going to win the match.   I'm surprised no one has mentioned the fact Kramnik won against KAsparov when he was 25, and yet most chess players reach their peak in their early 30's. Kramnik is 31.  If he's healthy (and that's a big IF) I don't think Topalov can do any better than his record against Vladimir shows.

Nietzsche,  (and all)

My apologies for my rant in this thread.  It belonged in the other thread on who the best player is.  I was taking the opportunity to attack another comment about Capablanca when I saw that you mentioned he was your favorite.  The fact that I addressed the comment specifically to you was a mistake, and my apologies for coming off too harshly.

When you (plural, not Nietzsche alone) read the comments of some other(s) in the other thread, you may perhaps guess dimly why I am against so much metaphor and simile talk about Capa being the best ever.

Again, I appreciate your thoughtful comments and apologize for anything you may have seen as a personal attack on you (singular).
