On the other hand, the IHT, that noted chess journal, offers from the end of Malc's line "44 Bf5 Rh2 45 Bh3 (not 45 Bc8, then 45 ... Rh4 46 Bb7 Rb4 47 Rb4 Nd3 48 Kd2 Nb4 49 Kc3 Nd5 50 Kd4 Ne7, when Black has a clear advantage) 45 ... Kg7 46 Kf1 Kg6 47 Bc8 Rh4 48 Bb7 f5 49 b5 cb 50 Rb5 Rc4 51 Bd5 Rc2, but White is struggling to draw here".

Don't ask me, I'm only pasting.

So, any advance on my prediction of another Meran?

40…Rg2 but that after 41 Bd4 Be5 42 Bxe5 Nxe5 43 f6 gxf6 (43…g6 44 Ra3) 44 Bc8.

I think you mean 44.Bf5 with Bc8 to follow.

Watching the game (without engine running  Roll Eyes) I thought 40...Rg2 looked like the only try but, obviously, I didn't think through all relevant specific lines.  The b7-pawn is the Achilles heal in Black's position and Pein's suggested pawn sac to get the bishop on c8 makes sense.

On the last game, Malcolm Pein says in his TWIC notes that ‘many commentators and even strong players who were letting their engines think for them’ (ooh, get you, Malc!) were shouting for 40…Rg2 but that after 41 Bd4 Be5 42 Bxe5 Nxe5 43 f6 gxf6 (43…g6 44 Ra3) 44 Bc8 White is fine. Blindfold I’d say he probably has a point.

Ah I forgot there was a rest day today  Sad Ah well, will just have to wait until tomorrow.

Actually I think it makes sense, as due to the do or die importance of the last 2 games it makes sense to have a rest day in between. I cant remember but was there a rest day in the K-K match where Karpov won the penultimate game and Kasparov came back and won the final game - I seem to remember Kasparov having to play the very next day after losing but I could be wrong.

The revised schedule is as follows:

October 3 -  rest day

October 4 -  Game 7 Topalov-Kramnik

October 5 -  Game 8 Kramnik-Topalov

October 6 -  rest day

October 7 -  Game  9 Topalov-Kramnik

October 8 -  Game 10 Kramnik-Topalov

October 9 -  Rest day

October 10 - Game 11 Topalov-Kramnik

October 11 - Rest day

October 12 - Game 12 Kramnik - Topalov

October 13 - Tiebreaks and Closing Ceremony

Anyone know why there is an extra rest day before the last game?  This was there even in the original schedule, so it's not the result of anything funny.

@John Cox - Sundarajan is his name. He is a 2500+ IM now. with 2 GM norms I guess. He used to be Sasikiran's preparation partner. He's also from Madras

Blimey! Thingy?? That's not what I wrote. Let's just settle for a Wastwater, the traditional way round this problem on climbing forums.

Oh it's not formally Sofia rules, by the way. Just Topalov said that in a press conference (part of his usual look-at-me I'm-such-a-fighter posturing. God, he's a thingy. But I digress).

Since everyone knows what opening Kramnik's going to play, in a way Topalov has the psychological initiative on Thursday. I'm sure he needs to go active and keep the chance of winning in one go. Another semi-Slav is my prediction. And this time let's hope Kramnik either has some decent preparation (which I guess he obviously doesn't or we'd have seen it by now) or else plays sensibly and keeps the draw in hand.

I was talking to a GM last night who made an interesting point: Vallejo and Onischuk are weaker than Motylev and Rublevsky, but perhaps they are more useful as openings helpers. They have wider repertoires and are perhaps more creative players. You'd think Motylev was brought in for the Petroff and Rublevsky for the QGA, but we've not seen the QGA hardly at all.

Kramnik used to be very good at rapid. I wonder if he still is. Topalov's never made very good scores at it, but then was he trying? They do say rapid is where general understanding and intuition come into it, and there Kramnik definitely has the edge. On the other hand if he does get caught in some prep in his Black game it could more easily be fatal in a rapid game.

On the whole I think Kramnik should fancy rapids more. Of course nerves and energy come into it too: it's one thing who woud be favourite over 100 games. But I think it's clear Kramnik absolutely must try and keep the draw in hand if he can, and it would be nice if just for once it was him who caught Topalov in the opening. Did he have any single new idea prepared for this match?? Of course Topalov had the advantage of him there in that Kramnik will still be suffering the effects of that ridiculous e4 phase. He won't have had half so many ideas stored up.

Castlerock: thanks. But it's Pentala Harikrishna and Humpy Koneru! No wonder we poor westerners can't manage. It's a good job all the Indians I've met have been very good humoured about it.

There's a chap who played at the Isle of Man two years in a row called something like Kidambi Sundarajan. I'm sure the first year he wrote K Sundarajan on his scoresheet and the next S Kidambi.

Good point about Short-Krasenkow (do I remember it? I nearly died laughing). Of course Short was genuinely winning. Not sure how much of a difference that makes.

I think Kramnik has agreed to play tie-breaks, and will demand that Game 5 be replayed only if needed to determine the legitimate winner of the match.  I expect he will sue FIDE in any event.

from http://www.chessbase.com/newsdetail.asp?newsid=3416 Quote:
After being forfeited on game five Vladimir Kramnik reluctantly agreed to play game six and thus allow the World Championship match to continue. But will he accept the result, and play a tie-break if the match ends 6-6 according to FIDE counting (6-5 according to Kramnik's)?

What happens if the last game is a draw, given that Kramnik disputes Game 5?  Do you think they'll go to tie-breaks, or will Kramnik demand that game 5 is replayed?

No matter what. If Topalov wins, the title will be tainted. If Kramnik wins, world is lucky.

One thing is clear though, the last 2 games have seen much of Topalov´s momentum in the match grind to a halt. He must be concerned now, as I mentioned before -  White in the last game of the match is a big plus for Kramnik- it can be easier to win these games than games in the middle of the match primarily because of the big burden and tension of the situation. How many times have we seen it before?  At the same time he´ll have to remember that he managed to lose as White before also  Wink
