The moves are:
1. e4 d5
2. exd5 Nf6
3. ??
So far I have seen 3. d4, 3. Nf3, 3. c4, and 3. Bb5+.
3. d4 seems to be one of the main lines, but I don't really want to do it because it transposes (I think) into the panov-botvinnik attack caro-kann, which i don't want to learn. Also, it gives back the pawn.
3. Nf3 I'm not sure about this one, but it also gives back the pawn.
But it is actually a fairly nasty move. 3...Qxd5 is a transposition black should not enter into, because after 2...Qxd5 3.Nf3 he is usually supposed to play 3...Bg4, while 3...Nf6 is supposed to be not so good (there's a commented game that explains the disadvantages of 2...Qxd5 3.Nf3 Nf6 for subscribers).
On the other hand after 3...Nxd5 white can play d4+c4 later and the c4-c5 plan (in case of Nd5-b6, while Nd5-f6 is just passive) that is very dangerous for black can be implemented.
Finally I suppose that after 3...c6 white is better prepared for dxc6 than after most other moves.
Quote:3. c4 I'm not sure about this one either, but I think there may be some gambit with 3. ...e6 which is kind of obscure.
3. Bb5+ --> This looks ok, I think white may be able to stay a pawn up, but I don't know for how long:
3. ... Bd7
4. Bc4 Bg4+
5. f3 Bf5
6. Nc3
What I like best for black here is 3...Bd7 4.Bc4 Bg4 5.f3 Bc8! with the idea of placing the bishop on b7 after provoking some weaknesses in white's camp.

If there are any lines where white can hold on to the pawn and stay about equal in terms of everything else, that would be very good. Thanks for reading this post

I suspect trying to both keep the pawn and to give black no serious compensation is too ambitious. I find the idea to allow black to recapture the pawn attractive, because white seems to get little bit more than his usual little advantage in return for that (while taking very little risk himself). On the other hand it may well be that one of the attempts to hang onto the pawn is even better, but black will always have some compensation (whether it's sufficient is another matter).
