Plus of course every french player knows his stats in the french are due to 3.Nc3 Nf6 (should this get a question mark? Wink). His results in the Winawer are 50% iirc

If nothing else works, a total pig-headed unwillingness to look facts in the face will see us through.

Siclian is a better opening than the french when you play for the full point.

Not to be argumentative, but:

Kramnik has played 80 games againt the Sicilian.  He only lost once (1%).  He has played 25 games against the French and lost 5 (20%).  So if you are playing for the full point against Kramnik I would definately pick the French over the Sicilian.

Kasparov has played 199 games againt the Sicilian.  He only lost 9 (4%).  He has played 65 games against the French and lost 7 (11%).  So if you are playing for the full point against Kasparov I would pick the French over the Sicilian.

Fischer has played 178 games againt the Sicilian.  He lost 22 (12%).  He has played 65 games against the French and lost 15 (23%).  So if you are playing for the full point against Fischer I would pick the French over the Sicilian.

That is not to say that any of us can beat any of those three, but just to say that it is certainly possible to play for a win with the french.

I personally think that it is a problem with chessgames.com.  I don't know why but it seems to generally understate the success of French players.  I enjoy the site but I have found it to be pretty poor at times as a resource.

For example when comparing chessgames statistics with my chessbase program whose database includes up to 2004:

Bareev:  CG 30 wins, 58 losses; CB9 70 wins 72 losses.  Still a losing record, but not by much.  He still has a slightly better record with the Caro-Kann but part of that is because he has a tendency to use ...c6 against weaker competition.

Uhlmann: CG 92 wins, 81 losses; CB9 201 wins, 118 losses

I am not going to go through all of the players mentioned but for instance:
with Korchnoi they left out 16 wins with the French but none of his losses.

Most glaringly with Psakhis CG gives him a barely winning record with the french 29 W 25 L, but my CB9 tells a completely different story: 56 wins 26 losses.  That is a huge difference.

Morozovich CG 23 wins, 16 losses; CB9:34 wins, 18 loses

Also very concerning is Vaganian chessgames gives him an even score of 79 wins, 79 losses.  CB9 134 wins 83 losses.  It seems once again CG has had no problems tracking down all of the losses, but seems to have a hard time tracking down the wins.

Gurevich is even in the French according to CG 33 wins, 33 losses.  CB9: 101 wins to 63 losses.

Well yes...his oponents have been no chickens.  Adams ,Anand,Karpov,Kasparov , Ivanchuk and more. But I am sure he would have had better score with the sicillian. Siclian is a better opening than the french when you play for the full point.

I've noticed this too about Bareev, and have no explanation for it.  He plays the Caro-Kann occasionally and seems to destroy his opponents.  Bareev continues to have some of the richest ideas for Black, but he just doesn't convert them as much as one would expect.

Of course, we should remember that we're talking about a great player as Black.  His record as White is fantastic.  I wouldn't mind having his performance rating as Black in the French!

C00-C19: Bareev's poor performance in the French?

Hi everyone,

I was looking up some players on chessgames.com the other day to find some model games in the French.  Bareev is often mentioned as one of the players whose games are worth examining.  However, when I looked up his games I was surprised to find that his record is absolutely terrible in the French.  I looked up several of the other top French players and found no one scoring below 50 percent, except for Bareev:

As Black in the French

Uhlman          92 wins, 81 losses
Korchnoi          128 wins, 62 losses
Petrosian          40 wins, 18 losses
Botvinnik          43 wins, 14 losses
Radjabov          37 wins, 15 losses
Psakhis          29 wins, 25 losses
Dreev           46 wins, 24 losses
Morozevich      23 wins, 16 losses
Vaganian             79 wins, 79 losses
M. Gurevich      33 wins, 33 losses
Bareev            30 wins, 58 losses

Almost twice as many losses as wins for Bareev!!  What is the story on this?  Are many of his wins left off of chessgames.com?  It just seemed like a very interesting statistic. Does anyone have an explanation for this?
