I got mine yesterday(!)
Fullfilled all my hopes and expectations  Smiley

Perfect as a travel chess set (although quite heavy for the size - but I guess that is due to the strong magnetism!) but also for "armchair-chess"....

John,

The link I provided is the shop of the Norwegian chess union. Have no idea whether they would only sell to their members or not. I guess that should not be a problem for u.

As an alternative, the same set can be bought from:
http://www.sjakkbutikken.no/shoppingcart.php?action=add&id=286
However here the price is, for some reason, 27 euros....

Had no idea that such a set existed.
Thank you for the tip!  Smiley

John,

According to http://www.sjakk.no/salg.htm you should send an email to sjakkfor@online.no if you want to order something. There's also a telephone number. The magnetic chess set can be found under the 'Diverse' link. It's called 'Magnetisk reisesjakkspill' (Magnetic travel chess set).

Don't check me with no lightweight stuff.

John,

I think I finally have found the chess set U are looking for Shocked:

http://www.sjakk.no/salg/magnetsjakk.htm

It "looks" identical to the one in the chessbase link...
Anyway, I have already ordered it! (only 11 euros)

I will let U know when I've got it.

Maturin13: my hero! Indeed he does. Now I just need to track down all the vaguely Asiatic-looking twelve year olds in the European Youth Championship and ask them where they got their pocket sets. Without getting arrested.
Mortal_Games: thanks but I can't see the type I want on there? Good site though.
Klick: I love the admonition on there - 'for checkers use chess pieces'! Class.

Thanks for link! For travel and analysis maybe this simple one suffices. Small enough for your pocket: http://www.labatechess.com/store/product_info.php?cPath=134&products_id=65

Hi!

I found these boards with space for pieces and strong magnetism.

I don't know where he got it but a small child at the European Youth Championships has the set you want:

(about a third of the way down)

I think I know what John means, bit like having "a pizza in a pizza box" type thing and a small area round it to scrape off the excess pepperoni and olives etc. (crude analogy I know).

Thanks, Viking. Those aren’t really the sort I have in mind though. Those fold over by folding down the middle of the board. The one I want keeps the board rigid but has flaps which close over it. This has two advantages: you can leave the position as it is when you fold the board without all the pieces on the fourth and fifth ranks getting muddled up, and when you store it none of the pieces are upside down, which makes them that bit less likely to be brushed off and get lost.

Well, you could get one at a norwegian internet chess shop:
http://www.sjakk-shop.no/

Go: "Produkter" (left menu) -> "Brett og brikker (top right image on the middle of the page)" -> "Reisesjakksett"
=> "Flat magnet chess set"
Two sizes available.
Price: 14 euro and 21 euro.
Dont know the price shipped to England though...
You could ask the owner at "stubrud@sjakk-shop.no"

I think the clue word here is "reisesjakksett" = "Travel chess set". Maybe if u use that when "googling"?

Not that this would be of any help (unless by some chance it helps clarify the question/produce a flash of recognition for somebody), but I once had one that was like what IM Cox describes in every respect (colour, size, flaps etc.) except the words/names on it (I don't think mine had any such that were prominent).  It was sold through Chess Life (or Chess Life & Review as it probably still was then) in the late 1970s, but via an ad in the magazine rather than by USCF itself. Now I wonder what ever happened to it ...

Thanks for the link.

100 bucks! Christ! Like so many these people seem to have the illusion I want the bloody thing wrapped in ostrich leather or with rosewood pieces. I don't - what i want is decent functionality, which is what Malc's and the BCM stuff lack.

They do have the right idea in giving you extra pieces, although if they were doing it properly they'd give you a pawn or two as well - forget promotion, it's losing pieces which is the issue. If I wasn't missing two pieces a side (the product I suspect of letting my daughter play with my set while retired from the game) I'd still be using my old one.

To be fair, they do look to have some decent, if expensive stuff, but not quite what I have in mind.

I want, in case it wasn't clear, the flat sort, not the sort with pieces which stick up. I'm not sure if there's some term of art I should be using when googling.

I've tried googling without success. Surely someone must know what I have in mind and surely such a good product must still be getting made somewhere? Like I say, you saw them everywhere 25 years ago. I did have hopes of a recent trip to Amsterdam, but the book stall there had the same junk as we get offered here.

I've never seen a nice magnetic chess set, but you might check this thing out:

http://www.jeremysilman.com/book_reviews_js/js_chess_mate_chess_wallet.html

It's not exactly what you're looking for, but it may be of interest.  The link from Silman's site seems to be down, so here's the manufacturer's site:

http://www.chessmate.com/

You may find something you like there.  Good luck!
