Well it is getting a bit ridiculous by now. Sure the protests were quite idiotic, but this reaction is getting into the same league. I would have understood if he didnt show up at all and release a statement, but such a sit-in is a bit overboard.

Signed contract says protest fee is refunded if appeal is upheld. Committee has upheld the appeal, to action to placate Topalov and simultaneously said there is no substance in the appeal! Grin

What should the aggrieved party do? Choice is simple. Either walk away from a million Dollar and unified WC title (Plus 2) or swallow the pride and play on, pose as though I'm a martyr and win the title which is very much within reach.

I would have taken the latter course. So would have many of us. It takes enormous amount of guts and pride (call it foolishness, if you like) to take the former course. That's why I have this new found respect for Kramnik. Now, I hope all the more, a solution is found and Kramnik becomes the champion.

the problem now is what chance of Kramnik continuing after defaulting this game? Just when we thought we had a match Sad

On the other hand I still cant see the sense of him walking away as he´ll have thrown his title.

Closing the toilet on speculation and returning $5000 is insulting. (Protest fee is refunded only if the appeal is upheld). When I read the appeals committee verdict, I wanted Kramnik to take this stand. But didn't shoot my mouth. I think, at this rate Topalov will have only one like minded fan. Kirsan!

I didnt notice that bit about returning the money. Asking them both to use a public toilet I didnt think a big deal as they were still allowed to use their private rest rooms, but obviously as you say Kramnik has read more into it and is taking it as an insult.

Castlerock what do you mean - I thought the appeal committee verdict sounded fair-minded and criticised the Topalov team.

Maybe I am wrong will have to go back and re-read it now in the light of Kramniks reaction

It seems likely now he will default this game, making the score 2-1, but in reality he could walking away from the match, which makes little sense to me.

Why? It's the only honorable thing to do. At least, Kramnik fans don't have to search for covers! Grin

from TWIC - Game likely not to go ahead. Kramnik in his rest room demanding the restoration of the agreed conditions. His clock has been running since 12:20.

If this is true you would have to question the advisability of this action from Kramnik.

Is there any (other) sport, in which the players quarrel about yoghurt and toilets?

An interesting response from the Kramnik team - they are showing they can play games too!
I seriously doubt Kramnik will withdraw from the match as it makes no sense for him to do so with a 2-0 lead, but will be interesting to see how the current Toilet impasse is resolved  Huh

The saga continues: http://chessbase.com/newsdetail.asp?newsid=3373

Quote:

If the match were to continue, the World Champion would refrain from shaking hands with Mr. Kramnik before the games and would not take part in joint press conferences with him. Veselin Topalov will make statements for the media separately.
