Yes, not very sexy, I would agree.  Funny that a defence employed by Kasparov, Shirov, Ponomariov, and the like would not catch on.  I like it personally, and Semkov/Sakaev's book on it is good, too.  Long live the QGA!

Before he retired from tournaments GM Maxim Dlugy played the QGA exclusively with Black and anyone interested in forging a repertoire based on this system could do well to study his games.

I think a lot of lower rated players think white is winning after 2.e4, because black has "given up the centre". Even on this forum, some quite high rated people did not like 1.Nf3 d5 2. c4 pxp for similar reason, which I was quite suprised about...

Maybe the a6-Slav would suit you vs. the Nf3,Nc3 move order as well, not to mention Nf3,e3.  That might cut your learning down some more, instead of having the a6 structure, the dc4 structure, etc.  Although the a6-Slav is considered to be less solid than the Classical Slav, it gives the opportunity for interesting play and a good fight.

Glenn Flear's book on the a6-Slav is pretty good.

However! I would agree with Tracke from a different thread that the a6-Slav is more complicated than the others and more difficult to play well.  That certainly has been the case in my own experience (I've done best with the Semi).

On a different note, I'm surprised no one has defended the QGA in being a better defence than the Semi-Slav.  I think theoretically it is more sound.  Maybe it doesn't score as well in practice, thus the preference for the Semi-Slav.

I would rank the best defences as follows:

1.Nimzo/Stormcrow1
2.Nimzo/QGD Tartakower
3.Classical Slav
4.QGA
======
5.Semi-Slav
6.a6-Slav
7.Grunfeld
8.KID
======
others....

The QGA is actually a pretty good defence for black at all levels and strikes a nice balance between complexity and solidity, but for some reason its quite under-rated at amateur level. Perhaps its not considered sexy enough.

I think I am going to play the slav. After all you just have to learn from D10 to D19. You can also cut it shorter playing ...a6 and it is D15. Against the english A11, A12 and we have the same structure. Now I need a good book about the slav. Roll Eyes

In my opinion there are four "correct" defences to 1d4 :

- QGD Tartakower
- Open Slav
- Semi-Slav
- Nimzo Indian (incl. Catalan + Queen´s Indian or QGD with early Nf3)

Not much worse (I´m talking about microscopical nuances) are :

- King´s Indian
- Grünfeld
- QGD Lasker
- QGD Cambridge-Springs
- QGA

Anything else should be risky. Of course only "against perfect play by white".

I think every top player of the last 20 years has had one of the first four in
his black repertoire (and I would advise any player to follow this example!).
Nearly all King´s Indian players used to have the Nimzo in their backhand.

I don’t know that I agree with TopNotch; we don’t yet know whether all openings are equally playable. I expect in due course, possibly within our lifetimes, the game will be solved and we shall know, probably, that all reasonable replies to 1 d4 draw. But I wouldn’t be surprised if some mainstream openings – the Benko for example – turn out to lose in 517 moves with best play, and some are shown to force Black to play many more best moves to hold than others.

But hopefully I shan’t be alive to see the day, and anyway in truth we probably have no idea which of these openings are which.

Eric; I guess we’re seeing in Elista! But to be sure against 6 Ne5 most people are playing something with …Nbd7 and …Qc7 now, either the Morozevich 11….g5 or else various versions of 11…f6. And the line of game 6 is coming into fashion and no doubt going to be more so.

But the trend is away from 6 Ne5, I think, after it’s success in the 90’s. 3 Nc3 and 4 e3 is said to be the future, basically trying to head off the traditional main line at the pass. But then you can’t go Bg5 against the semi-Slav, so the Meran can be expected perhaps to swing back into fashion.

Dude?! there really is no best, its all relative to what's happening at a given time and to a lesser extent what's fashionable.

If any opening was 'best', then everyone would be playing the same thing. Don't base your choice of opening on something as subjective as an opinion poll on a forum, do so by examining the major openings that have stood the test of time and then pick according to style and taste.

For the record, if pushed I too would opine the Nimzo and Slavs the 'best' against 1.d4 and the Najdorf/Sveshnikov and 1....e5 the best against 1.e4. Nevertheless I am primarily a Dragon and KID player who sees no compelling reason to change.

I suspect you may find a similiar train of thought with advocates of other openings such as the French, Dutch, Gruenfeld etc.

Well that's my two cents.

Regards,

If you don't mind John, I wonder if you could elucidate a little on what particular lines of the Slav are considered best these days?  For instance, I thought the old "main line" with the Bishop sac was under some pressure.

Wow!! You guys really give good answers. I agree with the opinion that semi slav and slav must be among the best answers to 1.d4 I will try to learn them Wink

Actually Gazza very seldom played the Nimzo and when he did generally played it dreadfully (relative to his strength of course).

Once upon a time (say 20 years ago) most GMs would have said the Nimzo/Queens complex and the Tartakower were the two soundest defences. One of the things that most surprised me when I returned to chess in 2002 was how the stock of the Slav and semi-Slav had gone up. Today it would be an interesting call. I'm not sure you'd find the same unanimity as you would with 1 e4, where I think most feel that 1...e5 and 1...c5 are clearly ahead of the rest. But the above four would be the top four, I'm sure of that.

It has been said several times for the very big GM that against 1.e4 the best move are 1...e5 9r 1...c5. Fischer and Spassky said... 1...e5 is the best by test. Could any ones tell me what is the best against 1.d4. (By the way I do not play 1...e5 o 1...c5 because I do not have the time to master them so I WENT THE FRENCH WAY )

Fischer said that 1.e4 is best by test. I like to say: 1...e5 Meeting the best with is shadow!  Grin
My advice for a defence against 1.d4 is the Nimzo-Indian and Queen´s Indian. All world champions played the Nimzo and this defence do not had ups and downs like other defences to d4 in history. If you like to play the French defence it is very interesting to choose the same structures too. This is a practical and economical aproach (Ex: Caro-Kann and Slav is another example). For example, a strong GM like V. Eingorn who wrote recently two geat books and one about openings called: Creative Opening Preparation have this same aproach in his opening choices: Nimzo, French, Sicilian Taimanov.

It has been said that chess players are good at two things, Chess and Excuses.  It has also been said that Chess is where all excuses fail! In order to win you must dare to fail!

The Nimzo indian has always been popular, I think.

I don't know about grandmaster's opinion on this, but I think 1...d5 should be the Nr.1 candidate for the best response.

(Note that "best" is used as in "best according to the supercomputer that solved chess")
