I'm pretty sure they're going to play Fritz on a single system (unlike Hydra) since that is what they did in Bahrain (vs. Kramnik) and New York (vs. Kasparov).

I think we can count on Kramnik to not try and get "cute" this time around.  Not only because it failed last time, but because he knows that the computers are just going to get stronger and stronger and we're getting very close to the end for these sort of matches.

RE: "Wasn't he even two up last time before losing a couple?"

Yeah, Kramnik was up 2.5 - 0.5 in the match after 3 games, but got blundered a piece from a simple position in game 5 and then the aforementioned disaster in resigning that game 6.   After that game he decided to play safe and easily drew the match.  When you look at the games, I think its pretty clear that Kramnik was slightly superior to Fritz but after he blew a clear draw in game 5 and then lost when he had a clear edge in game 6 simply he simply decided not to push his luck.  Hopefully this time around he can win a white or two and then avoid any breakdowns.  I think this will be a great match and certainly most exciting since Kasparov-Deep Blue.

Wasn't he even two up last time before losing a couple?

I'm afraid I think the computer is favourite. But I don't know enough about what it's playing on to say, really - this makes a big difference, no? Wasn't the thing about Hydra is that it links eight machines, and the present match is only against one?

Will we see the Berlin, I wonder? Computers can be fantastically poor against that.

My main hope is that Vlad rules out any of this interesting-for-the-fans stuff. What would interest me is seeing him win.

Kramnik was a game up against Fritz in Bahrain and then decided to play the famous Nxf7 because he thought it would be more exciting for the fans.  When the computer found a defense he was so upset that he resigned in a position where he still had a draw.   After that loss, he went into his "none shall pass" mode and the rest of the match was a draw.

Kramnik is in good form this year (he's something like 2840 for the year and over 2900 as white!) and has a good chance to play well against Fritz.  He also mentioned that although he thinks he is probably the underdog, he knows we're getting to one of the last points where humans can still win these match.  I think this will motivate him to prepare well.
I think its likely that the match will be a draw, but I'm going to vote for a Kramnik upset victory simply because I want humans to triumph; and I think Vlad is probably our best, last hope.

Based on Kramnik's recent match experience, I think it will come down to the opening preparation of Fritz's team and Kramnik's endurance.

Kramnik showed a remarkable ability to "play chess" in this match, and this sort of thing is even more effective against computers.  On the other hand he didn't seem to be full of opening ideas, and I am sure that Team Fritz is, as we speak, working hard to prepare against the Catalan.

Still, I suspect that the result will be similar to his last match against Fritz: he will play well, maybe squeeze out a win or two, and just has to avoid mistakes -- but this is quite hard to do, and so Fritz retains good chances.  The matching coming so soon after the WC will be good: Kramnik will not be rusty.

I think that the day is more rapidly approaching where we will use the criteria which Kasparov indicated: the matches are a victory for the human whenever he or she manages to score a single win.  I think a drawn match is most likely (no tiebreaks here!) but I give Kramnik a slight edge -- at 6 games, this match is short enough for him to win.  Anything longer, and I would give the computer the better chances.

The very fact that there are accusations of computer use at the very highest level should be sufficient to answer this question. While the strongest players in the world are able to compete with machines for x-number of moves and can still outplay them positionally, no human is immune to tactical blundering, and this in the end will unfortunately be the deciding factor. Just recall the last game of the Junior-Kasparov match a couple of years ago, in which the ex-world champ reached a promising position thanks to a thematic exchange sac on -c3 in a Kan Sicilian, only to offer a draw a couple of moves later because he didn't feel up to the task of calculating the complications...
