Was it me, or did Sokolov lose a completely drawn pawn ending with his ....f6? No doubt lots of other sites will tell me, but I couldn't work it out.

I couldn't see a win either after 53...Ke6 (instead of 53...f6). Tried running the king to g4, but couldn't get it to work.

And while I'm on the subject, could White have won with f5 instead of Kc4? Then ...b3; Kc3 Kd5; f6, and the h-pawn queens, or if ...gxf5; gxf5 have been thrown in then after ...Kd5; e6 fxe6; f6 again queens the h-pawn.

This one seemed quite plain watching at the time, but Chessbase doesn't mention either. Difficult game - either I'm crazy or they are.

What a great tournament by Judit Polgar.
I was sure Topalov was going to win that last game since he is so good at finishing strong in tournament.
Anyway, I'm glad this tournament filled the gap betweem the WCC and the Kramnik-Fritz match.  Lots of chess to follow... Smiley

I will be interesting to see who will be 1st on the January 2007 rating list. Topalov and Anand's ratings will probably be close. But also Morozevich had a stellar tournament just recently, so I wonder how many points he will gain and if he will also be close to them.

Mamedyarov-Sokolov looks about equal.  A draw would just about guarantee a share of first place for Mamedyarov assuming Toppy does not have a meltdown in the other game (and clear first for Mamedyarov if Toppy wins).

Looks like I assumed too much.  Toppy passed up drawing opportunities, pressed too hard, and will have to resign soon.  Meanwhile Mamedyarov-Sokolov has gone to a K+P ending which to my eye looks dangerous for Mamedyarov.  Looks like it will be Polgar rather than Mamedyarov who will win take clear first in the tournament.

Polgar wins:

After 56...f5

0-1

But it looks like I was wrong about the Mamedyarov-Sokolov game.  Sokolov is fighting to hold a draw - unsuccessfully it looks like.  Could be shared first between Polgar and Mamedyarov after all.  This tournament's been a nightmare for Sokolov!

Mamedyarov wins:

After 60.e7

1-0

Final standings: Polgar and Mamedyarov share first place with 4.5/6 followed by Topalov (2.5) and Sokolov (0.5).

In the last round, the Topalov-Polgar has taken some interesting turns.  For the first 25 moves, Toppy seemed to be building up nice pressure against Black's kingside.

Topalov,Veselin - Polgar,Judit [E32]
Essent chess tournament Hoogeveen (9), 2006

1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 e6 3.Nc3 Bb4 4.Qc2 0–0 5.a3 Bxc3+ 6.Qxc3 b6 7.Nf3 Bb7 8.e3 c5 9.Be2 cxd4 10.exd4 d5 11.b3 Nbd7 12.0–0 dxc4 13.bxc4 Qc7 14.a4 Rac8 15.Re1 Rfe8 16.Bb2 Ng4 17.g3 Ndf6 18.Nd2 h5 19.h3 Nh6 20.Bf3 Red8 21.Re5 Nf5 22.Bxb7 Qxb7 23.d5 h4 24.g4 Ne7 25.Ne4 Ne8

After 25...Ne8

Then came 26.Re1? allowing 26...Nxd5 and suddenly Polgar seemed to have the advantage.  Then 27.Qf3 Rxc4 28.Rg5 Qe7 29.Bxg7 Nxg7 30.Rxd5 Rxd5 31.Nf6+ Kf8 and Topalov seems to have a draw in hand, but instead of taking the perpetual he plays 32.Nxd5 ...

After 32.Nxd5

... and, of course this is Topalov, he will play for the win a pawn down.  Fun game to watch.

Mamedyarov-Sokolov looks about equal.  A draw would just about guarantee a share of first place for Mamedyarov assuming Toppy does not have a meltdown in the other game (and clear first for Mamedyarov if Toppy wins).

I have to say, despite myself I admire Topalov on two counts. His will to win and hard work. A must win situation and he dishes out Benoni! Got into the complications he sought and won nicely.

RE: "He was 2798 at the start of the tournament and has since dropped 17 points. +1 in the balance three games should keep his No1 spot by 2 or three points. I think that’s what will happen. Anand, Kramnik and Topalov will all be up there in a 12 point range."

Thanks Castlerock, that was exactly the information I was looking for.  Poor Topalov is going to be sub 2800...I, for one, don't think he can stay over 2800 consistently (and he might just stay under 2800 from now on).

As for Judit....all I can say is that I'm really happy to see her do so well.  I was afraid her days at the top were over (after having the kids).
She is really one of the greats and I'm delighted to see her back in good form.
WOOT!! Grin

ps - wouldn't it be great if she could climb back into the top 10?

Essent 2006: Judit!
27.10.2006 What more can one say? This lady has come out of her second maternity leave to completely dominate the Hoogeveen super-GM so far. In this category 20 tournament, with an average rating of 2730, Judit Polgar has scored 3.5/4, which translates to a rating performance of 3058 Elo points. Today she and Topalov won their games. Report with photos by Frits Agterdenbos.

Go Polgar!

I don't know what Topalov was thinking when he agreed to play so soon after the World Championship.  In the 1950s and 60s Candidates would only play in a few tournaments in the year after a World Championship match.  Even Karpov, Kasparov and Kramnik took breaks after their matches.

Topalov's form is clearly the result of tiredness.  He is talented enough to finish second in this group even in his present state, but I wonder if he really needed the money that much.
