I used to play closed games such as KIA/KID/Pirc and I studied endgames. Here lately, I’ve been working on tactics which is why I decided to change openings to a more tactical type to reinforce my tactical studies.  If I survived to the endgame I usually won but had problems during the opening and middle phase.  I realized tactics is probably my weakest area and if I want to improve I need to rectify that.   Cool

Well, so far, it looks like the Evans gambit is the winner and obviously we don’t know if anyone else will reply so, I’ll start on the Evans and check out the Two knight’s with 4)Ng5 which MNb suggested. Any other possibilities? What would be the best book to help me learn the Evans? I’d prefer one that is more theory and understanding than a datadump of game notations. Any suggestions to what I should look out for or be prepared for when playing this such as traps, most common defense, etc. You guys know more than I do and this will be my first look at the Evans so any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks again to everyone for your opinions. Your comments have helped me in this decision. Wink

The Evans is a good option. The idea are the same as in the Italian, only you sac a pawn to do it quicker. In many lines you can set up the d4-e4 centre and put the pressure on the black king. Plus unlike the Max Lange you have much more leeway for "bad" moves for white as long as they dont run against the strategic ideas. Kasparov and Shirov played the Evans and won with it against such players as Anand and Timman. Another bonus is that the Evans is a classical opening as many of the ideas are also seen in the "main" openings such as the Ruy.

If nothing else works, a total pig-headed unwillingness to look facts in the face will see us through.

I´ll second what TopNotch says, but if you want my opinion of the openings you listed there...

If I was put in a timewarp back to my junior chess days when I was an up and coming, I experimented with the max lange - it is interesting for sure, but I would not recommend it as the basis for a repertoire. I also gave the Kings gambit an outing before moving on to the good old Lopez, and here too the comment applies - interesting, but not for keeps.

IF you insist on gambit play, and I respect that romantic approach to chess, then I would seriously look at the Evans gambit. I believe it is sound enough. There may be problems getting an advantage in some key lines, but at the level you are at if you know it well you will pick up lots of points as I suspect your opponents will simply not know the best defences.
Bear in mind you need something against the 2 Knights - for that maybe look at another thread somewhere here about 4.Ng5!? where Nigel Short is in full sweeping opinion mode.

Hello everyone, I'm an amateur rated in the 1500's. I'm changing to more open/tactical openings in hopes that it will help me win more and move up in class.  I have a few openings in mind and would like your opinions and help to choose which one I will start playing. My choices are:
max lange        1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bc4 Bc5 4. o-o Nf6 5. d4 exd4
evan's              1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bc4 Bc5 4. b4 Bxb4 5. c3
goring              1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. d4 exd4 4. c3 dxc3 5. Nxc3
king's gambit    1. e4 e5 2. f4 exf4 3. Bc4

I've just started looking at these so any of them would take some getting used to. Right now, the max lange seems the most logical whereas the king's gambit will take some getting used to. So, before I put more effort into these I want your help. Which will be a better threat at my amateur level and will help me to win the most games? After all, winning is what it's all about right?   Wink

One more thing, for the max and goring, would it be better to enter the opening with 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 or 1. e4 e5 2. d4 exd4 and then transpose ? Why is one better than the other?

Any and all suggestions are welcome.
Thanks

At 1500 the solution to your problem may not be tactical openings but rather tacical vision and tactical alertness.

Perhaps identifying tactical patterns along with solving mating puzzles and other types of typical combinations will prove more useful to you at this stage than trying to memorise the ins and outs of the Max Lange Attack.

Best regards,

Max Lange and Evans: concentrate on 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bc4 (you might consider 3.d4 as well, though it rules out the Evans) Nf6 4.d4 exd4 5.o-o/5.e5 first. They do not offer much. White's best options are 4.Ng5 and 4.d3 and they might not appeal to you.
Göring: don't do it. I have played it myself, but 4...d5 and 4...Nge7 are much less fun.
King's Gambit: by yourself the recent Johansson book.

The move order 2.d4 is interesting, it guarantees an open game with lively piece play. After 2...exd4 not 3.c3 because of d5 and Nge7 again and also because of 3...Qe7. 3.Nf3 Bb4+ also has its problems. So 3.Bc4
a) 3...Nc6 4.Nf3 and Nf6 will be the big problem again.
b) 3...Nc6 4.Nf3 Bc5 5.o-o does not transpose, as d6 is stronger than Nf6. So 5.c3 Nf6 6.o-o, which is an offshoot of the Max Lange.
c) 3...Nf6 4.Nf3 is the Steinitz Variation of the Petrov; 4.Bc4 is the Urussov Gambit, when Nc6 is once again best.
d) 3...Bc5 4.c3!?
e) 3...Bb4+ 4.c3 dxc3 4.Nxc3 and White has still the option to play the other knight to e2.
f) 3...d6 4.Nf3 is likely to transpose to the Philidor. An interesting option is 4.Qxd4 Nc6 5.Qe3, which is an obscure sideline of the Centre Game.
