Queen v Rook + minor piece is an interesting one  Tongue  I won a nice game with that material recently.

shouldnt the 3rd one there be 3 pieces v 2 rooks (I am particularly fond of that one)

Also there is the classic: Rook + 2 bishops v 2 Rooks + Knight, which more often than not is at least equal for the Rook and bishops (of course swap rooks and its  a different story)
All these Botvinnik type generalisations are great but the position does also matter a bit  Wink

It depends.. Did you also have doubled pawns?

I like the fourth option. Up to me, having 2 pieces and one (possibly) free pawn against the oppponent queen is quite exciting but it turns out quite often to a draw.

Don't take this too seriously. What do you think is the most exciting dynamic material imbalance?

2 bishops for 2 rooks can be lethal: http://www.chessgames.com/perl/chessgame?gid=1230058

Ekebjaerg-Timmerman, corr 1991 is a great game!  I came across it several years ago when I while trying to collect some information on the so-called Frankenstein-Dracula Variation of the Vienna Game (which I used to play the white side of).  The game is briefly mentioned in

http://www.chesscafe.com/text/kibitz21.txt

It was more extensively annotated by Maddox and Timmerman at another site for which I can no longer find the link, unfortunately (it appears that the web page in question has disappeared).

Actually, I voted for this 4th option! It feels like a different approach to the game.

One example I know which has similarities to that is in the Kholmov variation of the Pirc:

1. e4 d6 2. d4 Nf6 3. Nc3 g6 4. Bc4 Bg7 5. Qe2 Nc6 6. e5 Nxd4 7. exf6 Nxe2 8. fxg7 Rg8 9. Ngxe2 Rxg7

It is 3 minor pieces given for a Q and 2 pawns (however Black has difficulties in development)

Option 4 is an obscure example but it shows adding up pieces's points becomes less important when your opponent has twice as many pieces and always has an advantage in exchanges and picking up pawns.

Option 4 seems severly under-rated. People have a particular aversion to "giving up their queen" even though you are sacrificing less than the tradtional exchange (.66 v .6) and commentators talk of being a "queen down" for 2 pieces as if the game is then over. If you have opposite coloured bishops and 2N v Q the imbalance becomes even stronger.

If you have any examples of the more obscure imbalances I would be very grateful.
