I am going to guess another year or so and Carlsen will have that spot.

Congrats to Anand on finally reaching #1 in the World!

(Not a moment too soon, with Carlsen finding that he can play on the big stage.)

So Anand wins! Just when I was wondering if he was past his prime.

Not only that, but  according to Chessbase, he will move to No. 1 on the April rating list.

Poor Topalov finshed equal last  Sad

Moro's win today against Topalov is an excellent endgame to study.  I'm going to spend some time this weekend with my computer off just looking at that one.  Toppy may be way out of form, but his opponents have had to produce some special stuff to beat him.

Does this mean Topalov is about to lose his number 1 spot on the FIDE rating list?

WOW...round 13 and Topalov loses again. This must be one of his worst performances in recent memory.

Nice win by Svidler.....I look forward to Friday's pairing of Magnus/Svidler since a good deal is resting on this game if Vishy stays solid...of course a win by Vishy and he will be very difficult to catch! I'M kinda of hoping Svilder, seeing how no one picked him to win in the poll, makes a strong run at Vishy with a win on Friday!

Wow, two black wins today. And black seemed to get the better end of nearly every game.

Perhaps the scariest thing here is that Anand has 5/9 (i.e. +1) against the field excluding the games against Carlsen.

If, say, these had been drawn Carlsen would be 1.5 points clear on +4 with +1 being enough for clear second place.

I am a bit confused, why did they agree to a draw after Nxa2? Doesn't black look better here....

Svidler seems to be fighting back after all. These lines are deceptive to my eye - they always look terrible for White but then it's not really a race of attacks and White has ways to meet and contain Black's attack. Bit more like judo than the average Sicilian.

It occurs to me; when was the last top-level Sicilian where Black just got mated? Even in 1995 Gazza was within an ace of getting put to the sword by Anand, but I can't think of the last time I saw it. Times change.

And it looks like Leko will finally get off the schneider, assuming 24 ...Nxa2 wins as many pawns as I think it does. Typical - you struggle for weeks and then when you win it's nothing clever, just a little shot like this.

Svidler also looks like getting crushed again in this Najdorf line by Topa. Of course, he could do with the same result of that crushing as at Corus, but that may be too much to hope for….

Not a moment too soon, I would say; he's been lost for some time. So that's how the kid plays when he isn't surprised in the opening, then. (cp MC-Aronian)
