To be honest I’d be pretty hacked off if I was Taylor, although I like to think I’d have avoided the temptation to spew forth such an embarrassing stream of drivel on the subject in public.
At the risk of upsetting Markovich again, folk in the US get way, way too burned about the possibility of people cheating. It all stems from the way they regard playing in chess events as like going to a poker game. Apart from anything else Taylor’s right – look at the game; the woman’s playing like an idiot.
And the son, or more likely a parent, sounds like an ever bigger tit. I mean, honestly, how likely is that a newly-wed couple are setting out to cheat in order to score 2.5/4 instead of 2/4 in some poxy weekender? And, quite frankly, what would it matter anyway?
One of those situations where I find I don’t have enough lack of sympathy to go round.
You're completely off the mark here. The kid never complained that Taylor was cheating; only that he was being annoying with all Taylor's lovey-dovey conversation away from the board. When you have two people standing over the board and making all sorts of whispery conversation, and one of them is your opponent, it does give rise to some natural worry, I think. Right or wrong, the kid was annoyed, and had a right to take it up with the TD. It's nothing about cheating and it's nothing about being on this side of the Atlantic, which is a stupid, stupid red herring borne, so far as I can tell, of nationalistic predjudice. You see a problem; you have a right to complain. It's nothing but f---g player's rights. Sorry if they don't do that sort of thing in Cricket, but in chess, a players rights are not superceded by the standards of English gentlemanliness.
If a complaint is valid, there'll be a penalty; if it isn't, there won't, and that's an end to it. And there shouldn't be any hard feelings afterwards either way, as there were on Taylor's part against this kid. That's the real sin here.
Now for reasons I can only imagine, ChessBase gave Taylor a forum to rake this kid over the coals before the chess world, and make a number of very dubious and self-serving claims into the bargain. And why? There was not even an adverse ruling.
And I thought it was incredibly cheap that Taylor marshaled images of Topalov on his tawdry behalf.
