Hi - sorry I didn't respond sooner, I've been on holiday.

The line I favour as White against the ...Qa5 stuff is the same line that Dji just quoted. After this then the analysis in WWTD2 of 17...Re8 isn't too hopeful for Black - I think that both 18. hg6 and 18. Qg5 pretty much bust it - ...

18.hxg6 fxg6 19.Bg7 Bxg7 20.Nxg7 Reb8 21.g5 Nxe4 from WWTD II looks playable, right?

18.Qg5 Qc5 Nunn gives white only a slight edge

Forsale analysed/quote:

"In the main line that Chris Ward gives in his book, you can find :
1.e4 c5
2.Nf3 d6
3.d4 cxd4
4.Nxd4 Nf6
5.Nc3 g6
6.Be3 Bg7
7.f3 Nc6
8.Qd2 00
9.Bc4 Bd7
10.000 Qa5
11.Bb3 Rfc8
12.Kb1 Ne5
13.h4 Nc4
14.Bxc4 Rxc4
15.Nb3 Qc7
and now
as an alternative to the main 16.Bd4 on which Chris found some really great moves, there is 16.g4!? with a very sensible position for black
In WWTD2, CW just gives 16...Rc8 17.h5? Bxg4! with a winning attack
But if i'm right, white has a simple, almost winning plan :
16...Rc8 17.e5! (used by Karjakin already, and on my database there is 81% of win for white !)

Here 17...Ne8 18.Nd5 Qd8 19.exd6 leads to nightmare :
a) 19...Nxd6 20.c3 +/-
b) 19...Rxc2 don't change anything because of 20.dxe7! (stronger than 20.Nxe7+ as played in some games) 20...Rxd2 21.Rxd2 Bf5+ 22.gxf5 Qd6 23.Bf4 +/- "

But what about after 23.Bf4 Be5 24. Bg5
This looks more small plus to me, then +/-.
Some more input please.
Thanks

There's another thread on the ...Qa5 line that I started that maybe I should have just been posted here ("Powerful Novelty against Ward's ...Rxc3!?") that shows Black seemingly in trouble even after the direct h4-h5 approach.

Hi - sorry I didn't respond sooner, I've been on holiday.

The line I favour as White against the ...Qa5 stuff is the same line that Dji just quoted. After this then the analysis in WWTD2 of 17...Re8 isn't too hopeful for Black - I think that both 18. hg6 and 18. Qg5 pretty much bust it - so the line I always get is 17...Bf5 18. ef5 Rab8. After 19. hg6 fg6 20. Qe3! is pretty convincing, as the ending after 20...Qe5 is pretty awful. I think that 20. Qe3 is good after 19...Qb4 as well - White shouldn't make the mistake of exposing the Black king with gf7+ too early on, as the pawn is often useful on g6. One example of this is against the 19...Qb6 line that TopNotch suggests - as far as I can tell, 20. Na4 Qb5 21. g7! just kills it.

I've heard that other systems are meant to be simpler ways of showing an edge, and this does require White to walk quite a fine line at times, but if White plays carefully Black's in a lot of trouble. In particular, if Black leaves the g6-pawn on the board, then the main threats should revolve around ideas of g7, as this also avoids any ...Qxc3+ tricks (I've learnt this the hard way by losing a game to take me out of contention at a tournament once, it wasn't a lot of fun!) as well as giving more concrete mating threats.

Hope this helps.

Adam

I think the Forum  shoudn't substitude books or CD... First you 've to make your own way and after come back with more precise question. Not give the refutation of the najdorf's poisened pawn.

Just one indication:
In the line 13.g4 b5 14.h5 Nc4 15.Bc4 bc4 16.Bh6 Bh8 17.Nf5 black have problems

Well I knew that was the setup but any chance someone could give a continuation or two? I see 13...Nc4 and b5 are the main moves but just looking with the computer I'm not sure why either of them are in serious trouble.

If you're around, can you please post that line Adam? I'm actually looking to Take up this apparently near dead system for club use so I'd appreciate a look at the sternest test.

ok i try to supply the place of Adam . i propose 10.Qd2 Qa5 11.0-0-0 Rfc8 12.h4 Ne5 13.g4 black to move!

I think 13...b5 is probably OK as well against a Kb1 setup, though it's easy to drift into a passive position in the queenless middlegame if you're not careful. The main worry I have about these positions is that it's not just the Kb1 lines that are suffering for Black: the straight-out hack with h4 and g4 is pretty brutal too. It's covered in "Play the Sicilian Dragon", which improves on some analysis in WWTD2 - I can post the line if you like.

Adam

But there is a post in this forum by TopNotch apparently giving new life in that variation.

To avoid the Timoshenko-Mutschnik line 13...Rc4 has been suggested but 13...Rc5 has done well in the games I found (1-3-4). J.Peters-T.Taylor, 1/2-1/2, for example. The only black loss I found went 14.h5 Nh5 15.Nf5 gf, but 15...Bf5 may improve.

In Timoschenko-Mutschnik it's the Kb1 variation (13.Kb1 in this game) not the real h4,g4 without Kb1 as
Adam have suggested

and now 19...Qb6, for example: 20.Qe2 Qb2+ 21.Kd2 Qc3!! 22.Kc3 Ne4#

To avoid the Timoshenko-Mutschnik line, how about the following:

1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 d6 3.d4 cxd4 4.Nxd4 Nf6 5.Nc3 g6 6.Be3 Bg7 7.f3 Nc6 8.Qd2 00 9.Bc4 Bd7

I thought the main point of ...Qa5 was to make way for ...Rfc8, which allows ...Rab8 to support a b-pawn push.  This has the added advantage of freeing the Dragon bishop to drop back to h8 if White tries to exchange it with Bh6 (clear so far?  I'm losing myself!).  Those are the advantages.

The disadvantages are that the rook at f8 can be a pretty important defender (but not on c8), and I remember Nunn questioning whether the queen really belonged on a5, where it could be susceptible to attack.

It sounds as though the disadvantages might be outweighing the advantages at the moment...

After 14.Ncxb5 Qxd2 15.Rxd2 ( or 15.Bxd2 Rab8) Rab8 with compensation in practice (statistic) but i have no personal idea of the theorical value of the gambit.
However these are  2 high level corr. games with this move = 2 draw so maybe it's a serious move.

Can you post the games?

After 15.Bxd2 Rab8 16.Nc3 a5 17.a4 Nc4 18.Bg5, it doesn't look like Black has enough comp.  But what do I know?

Thanks,

Yes I think in the Qa5 variation g4,h4 without Kb1 is far more dangerous !!
