I'd quite like to see a tournament section, not just for adverts, but also for people to post info about tournaments they've been to like tips on, travel, where to stay, what to do outside the chess, etc.

I don't travel much outside the UK to tournament,s but maybe with info from the international field of this forum, I might get some tips.

I suppose we won't know how popular this would be until we try it.

Personally, I'd think it would be interesting to read discussions / reports of re-occurring events. Though players seem much more interested in reviewing/recommending books than tournaments...  Undecided

This thread has been read 51 times (at least) in about 24 hours. Ok, Tony and I probably account for 10% of those.  Shocked

Perhaps if we let tournament organizers know they can advertise for free here it would get used.  We may even bring in a more varied crowd of interested players.

Again, there's the problem of checking on legit urls.  If the url doesn't work at all, no harm.  But if it leads to an off-site porn [amazing:  the censor turned "p.o.r.n" into "chess".  I wonder if the censor is channelling Reuben Fine? Embarrassed ] site...

Of course, we can ban the poster of obscene links and have some sort of statement like BBC's, stating that we do not take responsibility for links to other sites.

Sounds like a good idea, but we get so few of these is it worth it?

My vote is to delete this and similar threads.

There are thousands of tournaments going on around the world, some of which may be very interesting.  But if this forum becomes an advertising place for these tournaments, it will get clogged very quickly with outdated tournament info.

There are plenty of other places to advertise chess events.

Here's an alternative:

Create a whole new section just like the endgame section, just for tournament advertisements.  Find someone willing to moderate that section, and post clear rules for advertising.  One rule may be that every advertisement has to be removed upon completion of the event.  Another may be that only chess events (and not, say, chess and bridge tournaments) can be advertised, and so on.

This would be a hassle, but if there's interest in moderating such a space, maybe the denizens of this forum will benefit?

(Who's going to check on each url to make sure they are legit?)

Is this Forum really the right place to publicise tournaments? Undecided
Do any Members think they might find this useful, or shall I delete it?
