Liverpool drew FC Porto away today, 1-1.  The scoreline apparently flatters Liverpool because it was a shoddy performance and Jermaine Pennant was carded out of the game at about the hour mark.

I've said before that Pennant seems a real liability due to his sloppy tackling and temper.  This is the first time this season he's been sent off, but unless he learns his lesson it won't be his last.

Having said all that, Pennant is capable enough.  He just needs to control himself.  Look for Rafa to bench him an extra game or two just to help him learn his lesson.

When a football manager sees reports in the paper that his job is safe, it's time to start looking for a new job!   

Especially if you then go on to lose a couple of critical games.

I hope Jol will do fine. After all he has played for a very special club in East-Netherlands in the 80's and done well.  Wink

I think Jol is fairly safe, but what do I know?  I saw a report not so long ago, which insisted that he had the support of the club.  How long that support lasts, of course...

Meanwhile, in the league that matters....


Man City has shown themselves to be very real, dangerous customers by beating Aston Villa at home.  Liverpool could only manage a home draw against Portsmouth while Arsenal won the north London derby.

Is Martin Jol (the Spurs' manager) out of a job by October?

Two teams that are flying under the radar:

Blackburn is undefeated so far and has played only five games.

Newcastle is also undefeated and has only played four games.  If Newcastle were to win those two games in hand they would go to the top of the table!

The only other teams that are undefeated at this point are league leaders Arsenal and third place Liverpool.

After 4 rounds the Mickey Mouse League has a surprising leader. Who could have thought of this after that disastrous year? Next week Feijenoord-PSV, should be interesting. AZ's final breakthrough has been postponed again it seems; no progress since last year. No need to comment on that particular club from Amsterdam.
My favourites are doing fine, with a well deserved 5th place. I hope they will convince in the UEFA-tournament as well, it has been a long time (the 70's) since they conquered Europe.

In women's soccer, England pulled a bit of an upset by drawing Germany 0-0.  This after England could only muster a draw against Japan and the Deutsch destroyed the Argies 11-0.   

The US team beat Sweden 2-0.  The game wasn't pretty, but the better team won.  I don't like the new US philosophy of not needing to control the midfield.  They just kick the ball from one end to the other and expect their better athletes to win the game.   

The Swedes did almost the same thing and lost.  The Koreans played good strategic football and fully deserved at least a draw.  (The Americans are making a big deal over the coach's mistaken belief that he could play with ten vs 11 without allowing any goals.  In fact, the US was outplayed throughout and the goals came naturally with or without Abby Wambach on the pitch.)

Yeah.  Actually, the Irish scuttled their chances by drawing with Slovakia after being up twice.  A draw with the Czech Republic would have meant nothing to them.  I really didn't think much of the Irish--never really did.  Jackie Charlton had a lunchpail crew exceeding all expectations 10-15 years ago, and the Irish made the mistake of thinking they were a world class outfit.  Not so--never was the case.  And, of course, Staunton is taking the hit (along with Van Basten, Eriksson, et al.)...

Sven is heading for sainthood again as his Man City team is still in the top flight of the EPL against all predictions to the contrary.

Regarding the EPL.... You may have noticed that this is internationals week and there aren't any EPL games.  Once the race gets on again, I'm sure you'll see more comments about how the Dutch are winning the EPL!

Which reminds me... Why would van Basten sub out Babel for Kuyt?  Those two are playing together pretty well in Liverpool.  I would have been interested to see the two working together at the international level.  Babel has tons of speed.

Now you may grasp Van Basten's lack of popularity in The Netherlands, notwithstanding his excellent record the last three years. This was the xth match Oranje got away. Even during the last WCh I gave Van Basten the benefit of the doubt, but it is over. We Oranje supporters are waiting with fear in our hearts for the opponent that will reveal the truth and give Oranje a merciless punishment. I mean, this luck cannot last forever, can it?
